Live from Barbes: Lamazi Kolektsia + Luminescent Orchestrii + Musette Explosion.
Hear this show now:
Pop-up player!
TSP Live from Barbes, 376 9th St at 6th Avenue,
Park Slope, Brooklyn! 6-8pm. Two hours of live music non-stop from
three great young happening local ensembles: LAMAZI KOLEKTSIA, LUMINESCENT ORCHESTRII and MUSETTE EXPLOSION.
With co-host / tech guru Irene Trudel plus the fabulous Chris
Stubbs, co-engineer.
Artist details and links:
LAMAZI KOLEKTSIA. An all-female
all-star a capella group featuring Jodi Hewat Zagnut Cirkus
Orkestar,
Judith Berkson (East River Orchestra), Rima Fand (Luminescent Orchestrii), Kali
Paguirigan, Corinna Snyder (Yasna Voices) and Emily Hurst and Allyssa Lamb (Las Rubias del Norte). Some of the most beautiful voices of Brooklyn have converged
to explore the common ground between the complex and haunting vocal polyphony
of liturgical and folk music from (the former Caucasus Republic of) Georgia and
the raw exuberance of British Isles folk and early American shape-note singing.
MUSETTE EXPLOSION featuring
Will Holshouser - accordion, Matt Munisteri - guitar and banjo and Marcus Rojas tuba. An exploration and re-creation or the music
of the great French Accordionists of the 30's and 40's: (Gus Viseur, Tony
Murena, Joe Privat et al) who, along with Django Reinhardt, borrowed from
American Jazz to create Hot Swing, Gypsy Swing and other delightful hybrids,
injecting the dance music of its time with both excitement and unparalleled
musical creativity.
LUMINESCENT ORCHESTRII. Hot off its scintillating opening set for Warsaw
Village Band at Makor on May 10, the Luminescent brings its punked up
gypsy frenzy back home to Brooklyn. “There's a fine line between gypsy
music and punk rock and the Luminescent Orchestrii falls off it every show.
With three fiddlers, a bassist, and a guitarist who sweats enough for the five
of them, the band stomps the stage, thumps their strings, and saws into their
instruments. These are believers.” -Nonsense NYC
