Antibalas

Brooklyn's Antibalas kicked off the Afrobeat revival almost a degade ago.
A super-tight razor-sharp musical unit, Antibalas is still at the vanguard
of the movement to revisit and reinterpret the high energy big band style now called
Afrobeat, created by
Fela and others in Nigeria in the seventies.

This music merges traditional West African polyrhythms, Nigerian guitar styles and a strong dose of James Brown and other American funk and soul influences. Like Fela and those he inspired, Antibalas also packs a political wallop in its socially conscious lyrics.

Antibalas is gearing up to play a big record-release show at Warsaw in Greenpoint, Brooklyn on Friday March 10, and then head off on an extensive US tour in support of the new cd Security, produced by Chicago scene eminence John McIntyre (Tortoise etc.) for Anti records.

But before they do, stop by for their first-ever FMU appearance - playing a live in-studio set during the second half of the show.

  1:15am Katherine Zavartkay:

beautiful music -- maybe even kinda "soothing"?!? (in stark contrast to the carnage that was Hoboken's Washington Street!) . . . and ANTIBALAS are great ANYTIME; so ultra cool that you got 'em to play LIVE on your show!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
