July 27, 2007: Very Entertaining (Muy Divertido)
It sure was nice to be back in that Friday morning slot-- which I did for years, between 1985-1995-- playing hot guitar music, among other things. Muy divertido, no? Austin/San Antonio drummer Ernie Durawa (who has worked with Delbert McClinton, Doug Sahm and others) sent me the new Monstas' CD and I built a show around it
Listen to this show:
Pop-up player!
Artist | Track | Comments | Approx. start time |
---|---|---|---|
Big Guitars from Texas | Ride of the Ruthless | One of the Big Guitar players is Don Leady of the Tailgators; Don used to play in the original LeRoi Brothers. This is one of his tunes | 0:00:00 (Pop-up) |
Big Guitars from Texas | Sunburn | This one is by Ray Benson from Asleep at the Wheel | 0:04:16 (Pop-up) |
The Monstas | Crawfish Funk | Hot new album--"Meet the Monstas"-- a Texas/NY collaboration, with Ernie Durawa, Brian Mitchell, Matt Smith, Joe Morales, Rich Stanmyre & Aaron Lack. More later | 0:08:26 (Pop-up) |
Mark Ribot y Los Cubanos Postizos | El Gaucho Rojo | This is a great side project for guitar whiz Ribot: Cuban music that swings, on "Muy Divertido (Very Entertaining)" on Atlantic (2000) | 0:11:12 (Pop-up) |
Bokoor Band | Yeah Yeah ku Yeah | Coolness. 70s pop from Ghana | 0:18:37 (Pop-up) |
Andre Tanker | Call of the Water Dancer | A 1996 CD from Trinidad: "Children of the Big Bang" with help from David Rudder & Andy Narell | 0:22:27 (Pop-up) |

Aaron Neville | She Took You For A Ride | Early Aaron. What a sweet voice! I think this song is 1967, post-"Tell It Like It Is" | 0:42:56 (Pop-up) |
Benny Wallace | Saint Expedito | New Orleans jazz from 1985, on Blue Note. With Dr. John, John Scofield, Stevie Ray Vaugn and others | 0:46:25 (Pop-up) |

Rolling Stones | You Don't Have to Mean It | Keith | 0:57:37 (Pop-up) |
Delbert McClinton & Glen Clarke ?? | Lost in a Dream | Beware "Don't Let Go" CD (Music Club, 2000): It's not Delbert singing on most cuts. Delbert is on harmonica but it sounds like Glen Clark doing the vocals | 1:06:44 (Pop-up) |

Doug Sahm | Crazy Daisy | Doug, from San Antonie, recorded this in 1959 with his own band, the Pharoahs-- (not to be confused with the Pharoahs from Dallas who played with Sam the Sham) (not to be confused with Doug the Sahm) | 1:37:57 (Pop-up) |
