"Simple prayers for peace and passivity, with David Hykes" A good way to honor Dr King.

Cheers,

I'm thinking about passivity. I am all for peace. I just wonder if passivity works. I wonder, if someone was coming at me with a bayonet, would I be passive if he was going to kill me? I don't know. I'd like to say yes, that I could talk him, or her, out of it but doubt it'd work. I'd be dead. No big loss but would it be better to fight to preserve life?

In theory, no.But in practice, maybe.

I'd like to take the high road. That is what MLK taught us. That is what this music tells us.

MLK:

Irene, I'll see you in my "I have a dreams"

Wondering if the (male) lower-toned counterpoint we heard a little while ago more in the beginning is from Native American (ritual?) or another culture or just created for this piece? The wavering solo male voice we hear?

lipwak:

Groundbreaking for me!

It changes tone if you move your head around a little....!

Mr. Hykes,
Could you tell your listeners what software you prefer to use to loop and "push" the different harmonic frequencies in your recordings?
Loving the show!

Everybody, sing along!

It's wonderful to have David on the air. Thanks! I've enjoyed my copy of Solar Winds and enjoy playing his music at WWUH in West Hartford. Regards.

Reminds me of the Silophone

Dear Abbey?

dei xhrist:

I bet if you google it, you'll find the report some hospital did on cat's purring and humans humming (why is it always and only Beethoven?), creating a low frequency hum that maintained health and healing. Probably some positive/negative ion effects in there too.

i remember the silophone! (didn't Dan Bodah have the silophone people on his show some years ago???)

loving the show! very beautiful music . . .

re: passivity; there is a book entitled "The Buddha Taught Non-Violence, Not Pacifism" -- have not read it yet, but it deals with the differences between the two concepts . . . sounds similar to the Gandhian discussions of satyagraha, which is not about being "passive" but a definite active, sometimes almost militant form of non-violence and/or resistance . . .

SO TRUE about music being a healing force -- been feeling thoroughly crappy all day and the music is DEFINITELY helping -- THANK-YOU!

lipwak:

Thanks Slug...

Here's what I found on the cat's purr
http://www.sciam.com/earth-and-environment/article/id/why-do-cats-purr
They say it helps with bone healing/density...
  4:42pm
slugluv1313:

i don't know about any hospital study but ever since i was a kid, i can definitely say that the purring of cat(s) ALWAYS helped me to feel better if i was sick!
  4:46pm
dei x:

not quite what I'm referring to - http://breathing.com/articles/humming.htm - but rather significant if you sing or try to maintain a note for a long time. I'm going to look up that book, too.
  5:30pm
slugluv1313:

hey Irene thanks again for such a wonderful, beautiful show (as always!) still feeling *guilty* over not doing all the stuff i had planned to do to-day (had the day off, but not feeling well at all) BUT the music has been so "healing" i definitely feel less crappy . . . !
  5:35pm
Irene:

Oh, never feel guilty about not finishing everything you intend to. I have whole days like that! We're all a bit overextended in life if find. As long as i can throw together my radio show on a Monday I feel all's right with my world.
  6:02pm
lipwak:

Thanks Irene.
  6:04pm
Irene:

Hey, always a pleasure!
  6:32pm
slugluv1313:

you are welcome, lipwak! (the HapKiDo in which i trained touched on this a lot -- weird, i found that the more i learned on how to potentially damage another person, the LESS i wanted to do so)
