Tareq Abboushi, seated with buzuq, and his group Shusmo.
In March, 2008 the Brooklyn Arts Council is presented the Brooklyn Maqam Arab Music Festival. A plethora of Arab music traditions are represented in Brooklyn: The festival featured locally-based artists from across the Arab world.
Malika Zarra, from NJ by way of France and Morocco.
On this show we get a sneak preview of the festival, with guests:
- Tareq Abboushi, a fine young player of the buzuq, a long-necked lute that’s a cousin of the Greek bouzouki. Abboushi leads the NY-based quintet Shusmo and also has composed music for film - including a couple of Jonathan Demme soundtracks. Shushmo’s debut CD One is available via http://cdbaby.com/cd/shusmo.
- Malika Zarra, a talented young vocalist from Southern Morocco via France, who fuses Moroccan Berber (her mom’s roots) and Gnawa influences with Egyptian shaabi, French pop and jazz. Zarra released her first cd On the Ebony Road (available via http://cdbaby.com/cd/malikazarra) in 2006. After the Maqam festival, she’s off to tour Europe with Gino Sitson’s a capella ensemble Vocal Deliria.
- Nicole Macotsis, Brooklyn Arts Council’s Folk Arts Associate (and a professional dancer) who will provide a festival overview.
