Master drummer Obo Addy, from Ghana by way of Portland Oregon, and his traditional band Okropong recently played one of the World Music Institute’s National Heritage Masters series of concerts to celebrate past winners of National Heritage Fellowships, the USA’s highest honor in the traditional arts. Addy, who learned his craft playing with his dad’s family troupe, then in hotel bands in Ghana, and later with his brothers in Europe (including at the Munich Olympics) before he emigrated to the US in 1978, was the first African-born musician to attain this honor.

Here’s a good bio with unusual detail on Obo Addy’s early career in Ghana: http://www.mystrands.com/artist/2824/biography.

hey Rob!

thanks for playing ZIKRAYAT!!!!!

*one* of these days i will get to see them -- but how wonderful to hear them on the radio!
  7:02pm Ike:

Yeah, I liked that Zikrayat track too.
  7:11pm Your DJ:

Well guys, their Joe's Pub show on the 20th is free so that's definitely a good chance to see them. I'm going to try to go the distance at Joe's that night 'cause I also want to see the early show with Lobi Traore, the wonderful Malian guitarist.
  7:17pm slugluv1313:

i just looked at my calendar and saw that i have Friday off -- woo hoo! so i may do the same . . .

enjoying the Obo Addy "preview;" i will be working at the WMI show so i am really looking forward to seeing/hearing him LIVE!
  7:32pm Your DJ:

Can't go to that one 'cause it's a Saturday night (March 29), but it should be a treat. Also on the bill are Francisco Aguabella, Afro-Cuban conguero who has been active in the jazz scene for about half a century, Haitian master drummer Frisner Augustin and La Troupe Makandal; and Joao Grande, master of capoeira.
  8:50pm Parq:

Rob, I'm making dinner and confess I did not give the 'view my 100% attention - at what school does he teach?
  9:10pm Your DJ:

Obo Addy teaches at Lewis & Clark college in Portland, Oregon. He also runs workshops in Oregon and sometimes on the road - you can reach him via the education page on his website, http://www.oboaddy.com/learn.html - or let me know and I can put you in touch directly.
  9:42pm slugluv1313:

i met Mestre Joao Grande some years ago -- as limited as my Capoeira experience is, i am looking forward to seeing him again -- should be INSPIRING!
