Listener comments!

  9:07am jonathan:

how goes it, doug? happy friday.
  9:09am Paul Sherratt:

Jonathan,

It goes like this ...hey ho Bo Diddley
  9:13am jonathan:

that's what i thought.
  9:17am vivian:

Much better than the version played in that Tom Cruise movie way back in the '80s which escapes my memory at the moment.
  9:27am Paul Sherratt:

I'm listening to a joy ride !

( The Bo Diddley Jam )
  9:38am Parq:

Doug, excuse my injecting a down note, but did Bo catch any flack from the Clash's fans? I never saw a Clash show, but I'd always heard that their American R&B opening acts (Sam and Dave, Curtis Blow, e.g.) got some pretty heavy negative vibes from white Clash fans.
  9:40am fishmonkeystew:

Nice talkover music, Doug. I had a chance to see MMW and DJ Logic at the Kimo Theater in Albuquerque, NM back in 1998. Fantastic show, but the bridge on Chris Woods double bass blew up during the second song and he was stuck with his electric for the rest of the show. And it was still damn good.
  9:42am spaniel:

just tuning in and noticed the Bo Diddley on the playlist. If it hasn't been noted already, Dave the Spazz played a great 3 hour Bo tribute last night (which of course is in the archives).
  9:43am Doug:

Parq, I honestly don't remember, but I imagine that your account is accurate. I was in fookin heaven and don't remember actually touching the ground much. (Topper Headon was monstrous!)
  9:58am Parq:

Well, let's put it this way, if it was as bad as I'd believed, you would have remembered. I always pictured practically the whole crowd booing the opener. From your account, I'm hopeful that it was just a handful of fuckheads.
  10:02am Cecile:

I can't even remember who opened for the Clash when I saw them in '82. I think Terry Chimes was drumming for them, and he was great.

Lee Dorsey was a Clash opener too!
  10:05am Doug:

The Clash covered Bo Diddley's "Mona," but I have no memory of them performing in when I saw them. But they MUST have, no?
  10:06am jonathan:

how could you boo bo diddley?
i lived in philly the year that joe strummer died. my band's practice space was connected to the tla theater. you could see and hear everything through a crack in the wall. got to see him do straight to hell. so great.
  10:11am Cecile:

I don't know. People can be jerks. And impatient. And not know much about musical history.

I have to admit I booed Dream Syndicate before REM. But they really, really stunk that night. And I was young...
  10:17am GUMBY:

That's why we listen to FMU to minimize our ignorance of culture.
  10:17am dc pat:

Burning Spear got booed off the stage before the Clash--now THAT's embarrassing.
  10:18am Swami:

Saw Kurtis Blow and Gregory Isaacs open for The Clash at The Pier; no major booing for Isaacs and little for Blow until later in the set. I may have grumbled about Kurtis, but I slept through Isaacs. C'mon I was 17!
  10:20am dc pat:

17 year olds can be dumb as hell. I pre-orded Sandinista and when I got it, I hated it and basically stopped listening to the Clash. Easily my favorite album now.
  10:23am Cecile:

LOL! I only liked about 1/2 of it at first, and then once I actually heard some dub, I GOT it.
  10:24am Swami:

I saw Spear and fell asleep too. C'mon, I was 28! I think this was a case of a contact narcolepsy.
  10:24am Hugo:

Ah, the break that launched a thousand breaks!

Amen to that, brother!
  10:26am Doug:

Y'all should know that it was Listener Hugo who first sent me the link to that Amen Break clip. Danka Hugo!
  10:30am GUMBY:

Speaking of musical ignorance and impatience. I thought Coltrane was a bunch of noise, but I kept trying. Then I was driving stoned on the freeway at twilight. Then it was like an epiphany. The speed, lights, chord and lane changes all jelled into THE musical statement which defined for me all that was the late 20th century in America.
  10:35am Cecile:

I love WAR, thankd for playing them!

I keep three copies of their greatest hits on vinyl so I will never be without...
  10:38am Wes:

I had to crank up this War....nice one Doug.
  10:49am Hugo:

Danke, Doug, for playing it!

Speaking of the Clash, it should be noted that Michael Campbell, who collaborated extensively with them, died of cancer back on 15 March this year. Better known as Mikey Dread, he did release some lovely dub platters in his time, some on his own Dread at the Controls label.

Ah, takes me back to the time where I would go hunting for JA pre-releases at Daddy Kool in deepest Soho and making it all the way out to Shepherd's Bush to get the latest 12s from Greensleeves. Always a risky undertaking; you could end up with Jamaican pressings that were virtually unplayable

Check out Mikey's "African Anthem". You won't be disappointed.

He also did a one-hour radio special on Studio 1 once. I've got it in the archives somewhere. I'll see if I can forward it to Doug the Man.

Forward de bass, mon ...
  10:52am Cecile:

lilies of the field.
  10:53am Barney:

Lilies of the Field.

I build you a shapel.
  10:54am Tim & Kei:

Hi Doug, great show. Kei wants to request an all-Japanese funk special.
  10:54am Cecile:

Amen was written by Jester Hairston, a great gospel choir director, who, in his dotage played old scamp Rolly on the sitcom Amen.
  10:59am Hugo:

Sidney Poitier ... Homer Smith
Lilia Skala ... Mother Maria
Lisa Mann ... Sister Gertrude
Isa Crino ... Sister Agnes
Francesca Jarvis ... Sister Albertine
Pamela Branch ... Sister Elizabeth
Stanley Adams ... Juan
Dan Frazer ... Father Murphy
  10:59am Dead Corporate Eyes:

swing, man, swing!
  11:02am Cecile:

that was John Klemmer?!?!?!
  11:05am Hugo:

Joe Harriott with Norma Winstone on the vocals. Exquisite! Kinda fusion-style before there was a word for it. But that's nothing new with Harriott!
  11:08am Doug:

Cecile,
"That's John Klemmer???!!!!!" was exactly my first reaction. Some weird glitch in the seam of the universe split open and I found myself downloading this record. Not sure what I was expecting, but it's BLOWn me away.

By the way, my chums, you can get it here:
http://tinyurl.com/6kpgna
  11:13am Dead Corporate Eyes:

thanks for the tip...will definitely download that today!
  11:16am Hugo:

Done already. Perhaps this is some sort of companion piece to Barney Wilen's "Dear Prof. Leary" from around the same time ...?
  11:38am Cecile:

The archives are like listening to a live album without being there. Yes, you miss the spontenaity, but the historical value is still there.
  11:41am Dead Corporate Eyes:

I can't listen to archives because there's ALWAYS something on...not enough hours in the day! what a world of music.
  11:44am Cecile:

Prince Heathen is kind of a jerk, isn't he?
  11:49am Sur:

I have such fond memories of Fairport Convention concerts, way back when I had really long hair, wore long skrts, and smoked long spliffs! Such romantic music! Love it, thanks Doug!
  11:52am Dead Corporate Eyes:

why don't you do that now? why stop??
  11:59am Cecile:

thanks, Doug - just ordered that Spider John Koerner disc thru amazon.
  12:00pm Sur:

DCE: Still wear long skirts sometimes -- with short hair, and no spliff! It's all good!
  12:00pm Hugo:

The whole Fairport gang came to town about a month ago and Dave Pegg made an impromptu appearance at a gig with Robyn Hitchcock and John Paul Jones. The long hair had definitely gone, but still knew how to handle a bass.

Still, got to see William Parker's Raining on the Moon ensemble last Saturday. Oooooh ....!
  12:01pm Cecile:

so jealous, hugo.
  12:07pm Hugo:

And Kiss came to town. I wasn't there, but could hear them loud and clear from the other side of the harbour. Rock n' roll, huh?
  12:31pm mike tp:

hey doug and the listening family what a fine group of gals and gents, linked together by the power othe fmu universe. a deep friendly bunch. goin to oregon portland will look for fmu bimper stickers. see you all when we return enjoy the tropical weekend in jersey. peace all
  3:09pm Lawnguylander:

A little grumbling when Kurtis Blow took the stage? He was dodging bottles at one point. I was up front at that show and I was scared.
