Artist Track Album Label Comments Special

Set 1: somehow, it becomes rock. (Listen to this set: Pop-up)
Giancarlo Becuzzi & Fabio Orsi  North Of Me (at Midday) (track 1) (Listen: Pop-up)   Favoriting Muddy Speaking Ghosts Through My Machines  A Silent Place  Starts quiet, like a soft industrial wind, then we hear a woman sing a folk song over it, soft (nice) at times.
Grassy Knoll  My Little Black Book (track 3) (Listen: Pop-up)   Favoriting Short Stories  Sixty One Sixty Eight  Quiet --> Chris Grady's trumpet, rapid spoken words in mix.
S.Q.E.  The Wondrous Boat Ride (version 1) (track 5) (Listen: Pop-up)   Favoriting The Abyss Stares Back  Influx  While the actual name of the group may be dubious at best (Smooth Quality Excrement), their music is not. This is a drone-y piece of at times haunt-y rock that's almost beautiful at times.
Pell Mell  Week Of Corn (track 5) (Listen: Pop-up)   Favoriting Rhyming Guitars  SST  Atmospheric, man sings snippet of "Jimmy Crack Corn".
Scenic  Angelica (track 9: begun -4:58, ended by -0:17) (Listen: Pop-up)   Favoriting Acquatica  World Domination  Sunny & upbeat, instrumental, sustained.
Black Angels  Doves (track 2) (Listen: Pop-up)   Favoriting Directions To See A Ghost  Light In The Attic  Huge drums open, big sound, reminds me of Galaxie 500.
Scenic  Angelica (track 9: slightly different edit) (Listen: Pop-up)   Favoriting Acquatica  World Domination  Sunny & upbeat, instrumental, sustained.

Mic break between Sets 1 & 2. Background music played during it: (Listen to this set: Pop-up)
Biosphere  City Wakes Up (CD 2, track 3)   Favoriting Substrata / Man With A Movie Camera  Touch

Set 2: the old radio show portion of the evening. (Listen to this set: Pop-up)
The Haunting Hour  Breakdown   Favoriting Originally broadcast sometime between 1944 - 1946 - probably.  (no label)  I say "probably" because no records for this series were ever kept. So...noone knows exact show dates, or who the actors in each show were.

Continuing with the insanity theme from last week's episode of Radio City Playhouse, this time it's an evil nurse and her helpers busy conspiring to drive a woman insane to get her inheritance - just like they drove her father into the asylum. Great camp.

Mic break between Sets 2 & 3. Background music played during it: (Listen to this set: Pop-up)
Biosphere  City Wakes Up (CD 2, track 3)   Favoriting Substrata / Man With A Movie Camera  Touch

Set 3: the psych rock portion of the evening. And no tiptoeing through the tulips. (Listen to this set: Pop-up)
Bardo Pond  Amen (track 8) (Listen: Pop-up)   Favoriting Bufo alvarius, amen 29:15  Drunken Fish  From their first album. Most of it isn't very good at all, but there are 2 really good tracks. This is the long one: the "29:15" refers to how long this song is. It's more on the contemplative side.  ***
Pink Fairies  The Snake (track 4: begun -19:53, ended -0:34) (Listen: Pop-up)   Favoriting Finland Freakout 1971  MLP  My favorite album title of the year. And they back it up. This piece: prime, long & sprawling psych rock with, of course, a long guitar solo.  ***

Mic break between Sets 3 & 4. Background music played during it: (Listen to this set: Pop-up)
Biosphere  City Wakes Up (CD 2, track 3)   Favoriting Substrata / Man With A Movie Camera  Touch

Set 4: quieter, darker. (Listen to this set: Pop-up)
Bass Communion  pacific codex 2 (track 2: begun -19:40, ended -0:36) (Listen: Pop-up)   Favoriting pacific codex  E=mc16  Like watching a distant storm on another planet as it builds and subsides....  ***
Gas  Pop V (CD 4, track 5) (Listen: Pop-up)   Favoriting Nah Und Fern  Kompakt  Slight throbbing feel, somewhat calming and softly comforting, but also slightly insistent. Gas = Wolfgang Voight.
Aidan Baker  when sailors die (track 2) (Listen: Pop-up)   Favoriting the sea swells a bit...  A Silent Place  Slight rock feel, slightly more active than others on this CD, good at up to moderate volume  ***

End of show mic break. Background music played during it: (Listen to this set: Pop-up)
Biosphere  City Wakes Up (CD 2, track 3)   Favoriting Substrata / Man With A Movie Camera  Touch

Listener comments!

dave:

i can see why the black angels track reminds you of galaxie 500. it's a lot heavier, but something about the vocals and the reverby guitar evoke that band. great track, great set.
  12:33am
dave:

and by 'reverby' i meant 'up to its eyeballs in tremolo'.

also, i love this scenic track.
  12:45am
molerat:

Just poking my head in to say I really liked the first track (North Of Me).

andy waltzer:

wonderful show, andrew...love the music, the interesting banter ('rods and cones' is a new phrase for me!), and the radio drama is freaking me out. the mist on the bluffs (with some car light flashes) and the dark hazy sky in minnesota is really providing a landscape for the drama.
anyway, long time....hope to see you next time i am around the station. grassy knoll sounded great, by the way. your distant cohort,
-andy

Molerat--- you'll also like other stuff on that CD, and I have a feeling I'll play at least some of it at some point.

Andy --- it's an honor to know you're listening. I did listen to your recent fill-in here. Hope you can do it again soon.
