	10:40am kent goldings: hi elvie. i'm a librarian. library school is a huge racket, try to do it for as cheap as you can. also, the jobs are not NEARLY as plentiful as they'd have you believe. one of my fellow libs has her masters and still has to work 3 part time jobs.

	10:48am ~L: I just finished reading "Anthem of a Reluctant Prophet", the main character is an Holden Caufieldseque teen, for the modern world. It's funny, bittersweet and compelling summer reading! I got my copy out of the local library, and it's going back today!
	10:49am Ypsi Doug: I'm probably going to enroll in what USED to be "library school" at Michigan, which has now become the "School of Information." Particularly, the "Human-Computer Interaction" specialization. It's a pretty great program. My wife is a law librarian, which is also pretty interesting.

	10:53am kent goldings: ypsi doug - umichigan i've heard lovely things about. plus you'll get the instate tuition rate, so all the better. law librarians have it pretty good - there's not huge amounts of jobs, but the jobs that do exist are challenging and usually pay well. i highly recommend some level of specializing within your degree, all you wannabe librarians!

	11:01am elvie: well, NYU doesn't have a MLIS. but they have a dual degree program with the palmer school at Long Island University. you apply separately to the schools, but it enables you to get your MLIS from LIU (and you can take all classes on the NYU campus) and get an additional degree from any discpline in the college of arts and sciences at NYU. also, you are allowed to complete fewer credits if you do the dual degree program than if you completed each degree separately.

	11:05am elvie: oh good! the palmer school has offered the MLIS degree since the early or mid 90s, i think. but the dual degree with NYU has only existed for a couple of years, so no one really knows about it yet. you should go to gradschools.com. they have every program in the world listed, even lower profile ones.

	11:20am kent goldings: so what kind of librarians do all y'all want to be? books: just picked up Roxy Music Both Ends Burning, but i haven't read it yet. have any of you? and i just read a book about beer activism called Fermenting Revolution. it had great ideas, but the dude needed an editor.
	11:26am barney: I will 2nd or 3rd or 4th The Savage Detectives. It went too quickly for a book its size. "Then We Came to the End" (Joshua Farris) was entertaining too, once we got used to narration in the first person plural.
	11:26am elvie: yes, d, if you study at NYU to be a librarian, you have to get swallowed up by the ominous, suicide-inducing bobst library. but i also went to nyu undergrad, so i am now immune to its evil. kent - i would like to be an arts librarian, or possibly more specifically a film librarian. i am interested in collections management, and also in curating/programming for libraries or museums. i am also interested in preservation. ooh! and i'm also interested in rare books. i can't narrow it down! it's all so lovely!

	11:38am Ike: I just read a brilliant book: "Glasshouse" by Charles Stross. It's set in a future where people can change/alter genders and bodies easily, and back up copies of themselves, but viruses have erased many memories, and much of history is forgotten. The characters enter a simulation of the "dark ages" of late 20th/early 21st century society, supposedly devised by history professors, but then they can't get out.

	11:20am kent goldings: so what kind of librarians do all y'all want to be? books: just picked up Roxy Music Both Ends Burning, but i haven't read it yet. have any of you? and i just read a book about beer activism called Fermenting Revolution. it had great ideas, but the dude needed an editor.
	11:26am barney: I will 2nd or 3rd or 4th The Savage Detectives. It went too quickly for a book its size. "Then We Came to the End" (Joshua Farris) was entertaining too, once we got used to narration in the first person plural.
	11:26am elvie: yes, d, if you study at NYU to be a librarian, you have to get swallowed up by the ominous, suicide-inducing bobst library. but i also went to nyu undergrad, so i am now immune to its evil. kent - i would like to be an arts librarian, or possibly more specifically a film librarian. i am interested in collections management, and also in curating/programming for libraries or museums. i am also interested in preservation. ooh! and i'm also interested in rare books. i can't narrow it down! it's all so lovely!

	11:38am Ike: I just read a brilliant book: "Glasshouse" by Charles Stross. It's set in a future where people can change/alter genders and bodies easily, and back up copies of themselves, but viruses have erased many memories, and much of history is forgotten. The characters enter a simulation of the "dark ages" of late 20th/early 21st century society, supposedly devised by history professors, but then they can't get out.

	11:48am kent goldings: @lucky - boy howdy. yeah archives/special collections is pretty broad. i do manage a specific archives for a specific organization, but these types of collections can be anything from rare books to photos to correspondence to company records to films to what have you.
