Gumby, I spent 10 days in western China and mostly hated it (after going to Thailand and Laos, which were awesome). The language barrier wasn't too bad, but reaching sights and attractions is difficult. Everything is very spread out, but you can't rent a car. Not as friendly as Thailand or Laos either. In fact, many people are flat-out vicious and hostile (to each other, too, not just to tourists). The food was spectacular, though.

I've also heard Vietnam is excellent, especially if you take walking tours by coastal areas. Maybe I will look into southeast Asia first.
That Globe Trekker can be deceptive, because you know they have everything set up for them ahead of time.
