A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Listener comments!

  9:15am
gumby:

Good Morning Trouble! Please thank everyone at WFMU for that wonderful show last night. It was a spiritual funfest for me.

P.S. - I love the "Modern Girl" cd. The one about the guy who was everything she admired till he became incorporated cracks me up.
  9:18am
trouble:

good morning! i agree last night's show was truly wonderful in every way...
  9:31am
Pamela:

Trouble! You're taking comments? Did they force you into it?

Anyway, great to have you at my desk this morning... thanks for all you do.
  9:35am
trouble:

not exactly, just swiss bank account...nah...
  9:35am
Parq:

One thing I loved about last night's fiesta - one of many, many - was the diversity of the crowd. FMUers, art punks, Africans and Af-Americans from pre-school to grandmas, curious west siders, and more.
  9:37am
sloane:

It has always totally puzzled me that "Then Play On" gets so little airplay (except for 'Oh Well'). Leave it to my favorite DJ to do the right thing; it's such a sweeeeet album! JC rocks too!
  9:38am
annalisa:

that concert last night was one of the best I've been to, period. thanks for setting it up! and I'll be sure to check WFMU out at work (which is what I'm doing right now)
  9:47am
gumby:

The diversity was definately a big part of the spirituality. breath blown through brass & honed into a cosmic message was another. And how did that dancer move like that. The diversity even went beyond human. That one song that had elephantesque trombone and birdsque sounds. The crashing electric guitars and when Getachew strolled the stage and just played. The chantlike vocals of The Ex. The performance space the weather, just cosmic.
  9:55am
Negator:

I'm gettin' jealous people. I really wanted to go but live far from NY. All the concerts you guys put on for your 50th we're must see's in my book. The radio station at the center of "the known universe" must be a great place to be. I couldn't see the EX last night, but I did practice with my band down here in NC last night. We were BETTER! You guys should've been crammed in our little closet space listening to us, FMUers, art punks, Africans and Af-Americans from pre-school to grandmas, curious west siders and all! We'd rocked your knickers off!
  9:57am
Parq:

Neg, next time post the location in advance, and I'm totally there. By the way, did anyone else see the guy in the crowd afterward with a sousaphone? WTF?
  10:03am
gumby:

Good for you Neg, create your own sonic universe! Yes parq, he walked right by me & Mrs. gumby, nice hat too. But I noticed he did not have a mouthpiece in it. There was an guy by me up on th ewall who just was digging and grooving on everything. I think these young girls next to me thought I was really stoned, but I wasn't at all just, moved by the vibes.
  10:08am
R. P.:

Saw the Ex with Getatchew Mekurya in DC last week, and they rocked the house. There's a big Ethiopian population here, and it was represented in the audience, along with punks and music fans of all stripes. That was one of the most memorable shows this year so far.
  10:08am
Ike:

I was wondering what that instrument was! I guess he was hoping to join in. Heh.

This was indeed one of the must-sees. (A.A.) I'm sad I missed the first few minutes of the Ex & Getachew though.
  10:09am
gumby:

Change of subject. Did anyone see Shawn Johnson, the US gymnasts TV interview after winning the gold medal on Tuesday night. She made a nice classy, silent political statement with her peace symbol earings. Nice touch!
  10:12am
PG:

last night's show was something i will not forget anytime soon. just amazing.
  10:15am
Ike:

Gumby, IMO, a classier statement would be a loud statement about China's human rights abuses. Maybe earrings depicting those two old women being dragged off to labor camps for daring to apply for a permit to protest. Although that might be a bit heavy on the earlobes, I admit.

IOC = impotence, opulence, corruption.

Great show Trouble.
  10:15am
marionfrenchie:

lucky you! The Ex came to a small town in Brittany a couple month back, and I got lazy and stayed home... stupid me! hope they'll come again with Getatchew in the near future!
  10:18am
C:

They haven't been dragged off to labor camps yet, just threatened with it.
  10:21am
Bad Ronald:

Man am I chagrined. I spaced it, got lit and watched old episodes of the Addams Family (yes, sad but true).

Was last night's show recorded and if so, more importantly, will it be available on fmu.com anytime soon?
  10:27am
gumby:

I agree there are many things wrong with the Olympics as with any system. And China is headed for huge environmental cataclysm, along with their less than acceptable human rights record. However, I will never lose my amazement that a person can spend 6 hours a day for years perfecting the movement of their body. I could never summon the strength to that kind of commitment.
  10:27am
55fps:

BR: That Fester can be pretty funny. Don't feel so bad, I got shtaked and listened to Bert Kaempfert records (don't knock it 'til you've tried it).
  10:32am
GP:

"Bert Kaempferts got the mad hits"

Morning Trouble
  10:34am
Bad Ronald:

TX 55fps I'll check out some Kaempfert pieces.

The episode where Lurch got a record deal was killing me!

Negator - Does your band have any tunes on-line I can check out?
  10:35am
Parq:

BR, I agree with 55; a life watching The Addams Family is a life well spent. ("Thanks, It, you're all . . . what are you all, anyway?") You can't do everything, not even in NYC, see?
  10:35am
esch oder anarchie!:

Love this 600% collection - the D Brown "Westbound Train" also has a fab al green sample ...
  10:39am
Bad Ronald:

Thanks for the kind words Parq only problem is I'm starting to develop a thing for Morticia...
  10:52am
annalisa:

ha, well that's a conversation stopper :)
  10:53am
Derek:

Is it just me or was that Silver Summit track absolutely great?
  10:54am
trouble:

yes silver summit is great and they will be playing live on this show 9/25...
  10:57am
gumby:

Love that fish head enemy stuff!
  11:01am
nh_dave:

I do love this LCD song...
  11:01am
trent:

WHOA AWESOME SONG SERIES
  11:03am
Negator:

Two bands. I sing and play drums in this one:
http://www.myspace.com/themenproject1
and just play drums in this one:
http://www.myspace.com/rocketcottage
Hope you like them Bad Ronald
Mortisha! Goddamn, I looked for a woman like her from puberty to about late 20's. I mean Lily Munster was sooo hot, but Mortisha, mmmmmm. Sorry, do I sound too obvious? Hell, I'd fucked Fester to see that look on his face, you know stick a light bulb in his mouth. Tee-hee...
  11:06am
Parq:

I was gonna say, Ron, you and every other guy who grew up watching that show. Caroline Jones also has a small role in that Frank Sinatra movie that introduced "High Hopes".
  11:07am
gumby:

Neg I will never look at Fester the same again. That is too funny.
  11:14am
Negator:

Tony Coulter turned me on to Andy Bey and his version of 'River Man'. I love this song very much. Thanks Trouble. Everyone must hear Andy Bey's version, though.
  11:19am
Negator:

Correction: Irwin turned me on to Andy Bey. TC turned me on to 10,000 other bands....
  11:20am
HotRod:

This Norway Kitty track is perfect right now. Thanks Trouble!
  11:21am
Christy:

what did you just say about MV and EE in bklyn? thanks for the mail btw--you must have your hands full dearie.
  11:22am
elvie:

so wait, how do i get my hands on a copy of "all my friends"? halp!
  11:24am
elvie:

nevermind! i done figured it out.
  11:26am
christy:

hi me again--finally got my 'fmu swag, but still waiting for my trouble disk...:-)
  11:26am
HotRod:

Where's my cafe con leche???
  11:27am
trouble:

everyone's favorite band MV& EE are playing the Issue project room on 9/27 as part of the WFMU curated month of weekends there
  11:27am
Bad Ronald:

Thanks Negator - gonna check them out later!
  11:31am
Parq:

Neg, is the band name "Rocket Cottage" an intentional reference to the mid-70s Steeleye Span album, or is that a coincidence?
  11:34am
gumby:

No!!!!! Make McArthur Park stop, PPPPPPLLLLLLLEEEEEAAAAAASSSSSSEEEEE!!!!!!
  11:34am
Ted from Baltimore:

I don't think I can take it either.
  11:34am
Lucky:

Is that Waylon's lady friend playing the Hammond organ?
  11:35am
55fps:

I like the Telly Savales version better.
  11:38am
christy:

thanks for repeating that info. I'm at work all alone today, so I'm blasting your show through the desktop speakers. wooHOO!
  11:39am
gumby:

One time on one of those NPR stations I was listening as Pete Fornatell told the guy who wrote this nonsense, what a great song it was, My sweet green puke was boiling.
  11:43am
ee:

This track is killer. Thanks!
  11:43am
Lilsis:

Hi Trouble,
How about some elvis for a cranston girl?
  11:47am
Parq:

Why does everyone hate "McA Park?" I remember it was number one in a poll conducted by Dave Barry as to the worst songs ever. Try to keep in mind, these are the people who have made Whitney Houston a superstar.
  11:48am
Bad Ronald:

Dig this Marianne Faithfull track thanks!
  11:53am
gumby:

I just think "the cake in the rain" is a stupid analogy. Losing your arm, your lover, your child, that's tradgedy. Dripping green icing, that's laughable.
  11:54am
trouble:

hello miss c from cranston!
  11:54am
Bad Ronald:

That tune's a bitter pill. I took the time to check out Negator's bands and must say I'm partial to Rocket Cottage.
  11:55am
lilsis:

Thanks, for the song-----great job!!! xoxo
