Field Recordings from Africa with the guys who recorded them, sonic explorers Wills Glasspiegel and Drew Alt.
Wills is working on a sound / music / field recording project for CARE, he's a project manager at 651 Arts and a producer for Afropop Worldwide, and he spent some time with Smithsonian Folkways and David Byrne’s Luaka Bop label, among other things. Drew recently spent a year in West Africa working with the government of Ghana. He's also a pianist and trombonist. He led Sonido Unidad, an Afro-Cuban jazz orchestra in his college days at Yale.
Together they do a radio podcast - see

Many of these types of songs worked well as military songs. The double-reed is so piercing and carries so well in air that it was often a military band fixture - even the highland pipes fall into this category. | |
