"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

Listener comments!

  9:10am
Bad Ronald:

Morning!
  9:27am
Swami:

who was taping in my basement last night? Lots o' crickets!
  9:36am
Parq:

Hey, John. Been busy since 9, but wanted to stop and say it's good to hear you.
  9:39am
JA:

Hi Parq! ( & swami and bad)
  9:50am
stingy d:

nice quote-description... makes me feel like i like what i'm about to hear before i've even heard it.
  9:52am
JA:

yeah. that's the funny thing about manipulation.
  9:54am
stingy d:

i really like the "no reflection on you" bit.
  9:55am
Ian:

Thanks for the tunes! My first time listening to your show, it's great.
  9:56am
Parq:

Actually, I've been thinking about that quote all morning. We've all gotten that email, or some analogue to it. I think it captures the essence of trying to be a WFMU person in a ClearChannel world.
  9:58am
stingy d:

whoah.... parq... man.... too early
  10:03am
Bad Ronald:

I like Joe Belock a lot.
  10:12am
GP:

Morning all...not that anyone cares what I think but my fingers are already typin....I kind of agree with the part of that quote about Free-Form jazz...I may be naive and unsophisticated but I just don't get it...and I have tried to (suffer) listen to a lot of it, in fact one of local college stations plays a TON of it..so far none of it has been good or even something that is even remotely interesting. At times I think the joke is on us....(steps gently off of soapbox).

ps: John Allen, did you invent the word "Dub"?...cool ; )
  10:13am
JA:

Yeah, me and king tubby came up w/ Dub
  10:17am
stingy d:

parq- i take it back.
  10:19am
JA:

impressive conflict resolution you two, maybe you should get a room
  10:21am
Bad Ronald:

And I thought it was the three men in a tub (that came up w/Dub)!
Thanks for settin the record straight.
  10:25am
GP:

I think Lee "Scratch" Perry was there too.
  10:28am
JA:

yeah it was the 3 of us...tubby, scratch, and JA
  10:29am
Ike:

What is this, the resurrection of CD101.9?!? "The Corporate World" indeed.
  10:30am
JA:

aww what's the matter IKE, afraid of the fire?
  10:31am
Frank Zappa:

Rub it!!!!
  10:32am
m:

ike just feels strangled by the passion of these tunes
  10:32am
g:

yeah, I'm definitely getting a strong whiff of "dentist's office" with this one . . .
  10:33am
GP:

If you could only follow this up with some Christopher Cross...then you really will carry me off to heaven!
  10:34am
GP:

not really
  10:35am
C:

Oh is Gail the bald chick?
  10:36am
Bad Ronald:

Yeah she wears a merkin.
  10:41am
Ike:

Yes. Yes, I am afraid of the fire. And by "fire" I mean "DJ who was been in the landfills, digging out '70s and '80s vinyl that should've stayed there, and randomly throwing it onto the turntables." HA!
  10:42am
JA:

thanks for your praise Ike, no matter how bitter the root.
  10:42am
Ma:

good work, JA. just ig the simpletons
  10:42am
Parq:

That's fine, Ron. We want more 'Merkin singers on this show, not these damn foreigners. (No ditto of Ike's 70s reference intended.)
  10:43am
Brian C.:

Scary thought or cool band name: Ethel Merman's Merkin
  10:43am
Bad Ronald:

Don't mind him JA. Just throw a few errant apostrophes his way.
That'll get his goat!
  10:47am
Ike:

Oh God, Ronald, don't expose my kryptonite. I'll give up my right to free speech if it will protect the poor abused apostrophes.

Mmm, roots. You can make tea with bitter roots. Anyway, I really like this Tetine track.
  10:48am
GP:

Thanks Brian...need a unicorn chaser after that image burned into my brain......although you should probably register that domain name ASAP!
  10:48am
stingy d:

get a room?
  10:48am
JA:

i had you figured for a comic book fan. off my board!
  10:55am
Bad Ronald:

My bad IKE. Nobody knows that I'm deathly afraid of merkins. Wait I've said too much...

Dig this Bowie tune.
  10:55am
Ike:

What comic books? No comic books here. Me likey Shining Path!
  10:58am
GP:

Weird, my Grandad used to buy tires form a guy named Red Money. Wow, this is just like Pop-Up Videos...only better, and oh yeah, there are no videos.
  11:00am
stingy d:

merkin blumpkin
  11:01am
GP:

Please...no more of the M word
  11:07am
stingy d:

strawberry shortcake
  11:09am
Sean Daily:

Not even close to first comment! Woo hoo!
  11:11am
GP:

Oh, THAT Davitt Sigerson.. I think he was friends with Dealney and Bonnie.

Hey Sean
  11:11am
Bad Ronald:

Pittsburgh Platter?
  11:19am
GP:

This Mike Kelly sounds like ghosts...not that I have ever heard them mind you, but this would be a great haunted house track.
  11:42am
GP:

OK..NOT the band Ghosts, but those ectoplasmic dudes that Bill Murray was catching.
  11:42am
john:

18 minute songs rule
  11:46am
GP:

Dude,
you said DUB!
  11:47am
JA:

i couldnt help it
  11:47am
not deaf:

but your bed music is inaudible
  11:52am
Parq:

GP, he panicked.
  11:52am
nh_dave:

Best version of house of pain ever
  11:55am
GP:

Nah,
He is just trying to be cool.
  11:57am
Bad Ronald:

  11:57am
stingy d:

http://www.zshare.net/audio/19584571431fd16b/
  12:00pm
Bad Ronald:

  5:47pm
Anita Oswald:
