Obama, Obama, and more Obama! A world-musicky Obama love-fest.

File under: Too much is not enough!

Perhaps there will soon be a musical genre simply known as Obama. Why not?

(A longer version of this show was broadcast on Transpacific Sound Paradise Saturday November 1 - See http://www.wfmu.org/playlists/tp.)

This administration would like to thank the following people for their generous non-financial contributions to the cause:

Anastasia Tsioulcas / Anna Watson / Bob Godfried / CC Smith / DJ Lightbolt / DJ Neva / Ethan Donaldson / Jamie Propp / Jenifer Shepherd / Jim Phillips / Joel Davis / Jose Conde / Megan Romer / Patricia Herlevi / Ruben Gonzalez / Sylvain Leroux / Tom Frouge / Tom Pryor / Ukelilli a/k/a Lillian Parker

Here's an article I wrote for my day job (WNYC) that provides additional info on some of the songs: http://blogs.wnyc.org/culture/2008/11/03/obamas-multi-culti-musical-lovefest/

This Week's Playlist:

The Candidate: Film Clip Favoriting
Robert Redford has recited this speech one time too many.

Amigos de Obama: Viva Obama Favoriting

Fosforo: Obamacumbia Favoriting

Kenge Kenge: Obama for Change Favoriting
Kenge Kenge's music is basically the back-to-the-roots version of benga, the western Kenyan guitar band style that Extra Golden plays.

Extra Golden: Obama Favoriting / Hera Ma Nono / Thrill Jockey
Extra Golden thanks Obama for helping them get their US tour visas in 2006!

Samba Mapangala: Obama Ubarikiwe Favoriting
(Obama be blessed). Samba, a very famous Congolese-born singer who spent many years in Kenya and now lives near Baltimore, MD, sings in Swahili and Minneapolis-based 14-year old rapper, Fanaka Ndege raps in English.

Tony Nyadundo: Obama Favoriting
In the Kenyan Ohangla style. The song won the singer a Kenyan music award in the traditional music category.

Fula Flute: Obama Favoriting
Adaptation of traditional West African praise song style by NYC group centered on the tambin - the "Fula flute" of Guinea.

Jose Conde: Respondele a Obama Favoriting
Jose says this song was inspired by his Cuban-born mom, who like many Cubans who left for the US after Castro came in tends to vote Republican. But this time she's voting for Obama and that inspired Jose to write this song.

Manze Dayila: Change (The Barack Obama Song) Favoriting
Haitian singer based in New York who came to the US by taking a raft from Haiti to Miami when she was 8 months pregnant!

Anyone Brothers Band: Obama is Beautiful World Favoriting
The YouTube video for this song was shot on and near the beach features many happy waving locals, the Obama Shoes Center (see below) a toy boat launch (perhaps to carry a message across the Pacific to the U.S.), and a Y-M-C-A style dance routine (O-B-A-M-A, that is). So what’s this all about? Well, there is a coastal fishing town in central Japan named Obama (hence, the Obama Shoes Center). The two Obamas are aware of each other, as the AP reported in March: Obama the town sent Obama the candidate its trademark local sweet bean cakes and other locally-produced gifts and Obama the candidate sent Obama (the town) mayor Toshio Murakami a personal note of thanks. This past summer Obama, Japan decided to add to the fun by incorporating its political namesake into its Obama festival. Anyone Brothers Band produced their song and video in and around Obama, Japan. The song lyrics (translated to English here) convey affection for both Obamas. For instance: Wide, open ocean and dazzling, bright sun / Seems like they reflect the future of faraway America. And the chorus: Obama is Number One! Which Obama? Well clearly, both! In addition, a friend who knows about these things tells me that the male singer is attempting to mimic an American accent in a manner that’s common in Japan.

Louisiana for Obama: Oui On Peut (Yes We Can) Favoriting
An all-star Cajun / zydeco band plays the song written by fiddler Dirk Hill. Recorded at the Whirlybird in Opelousas, Louisiana.

Mighty Sparrow: Barack the Magnificent Favoriting
The Calypso legend gets more into the particulars of the election than most other Obama song-spinners. Did anyone else name-check Jack Abramoff in their Obama songs?

Shay Black: There is No One as Irish as Barack O'Bama Favoriting
Version of the song by the Hardy Drew and the Nancy Boys, with verses added. The Boys (actually the Corrigan brothers of - fittingly - Limerick, Ireland) complained when Black put his version of their song on YouTube without credit, but Black later apologized and promises to take his YouTube video down after today.

Hardy Drew and the Nancy Boys: There is No One as Irish as Barack O'Bama Favoriting
Original version of the above.

  7:17am John from Oslo:

Who can take a sunrise, sprinkle it with dew
Cover it with choc'late and a miracle or two
The Obama Man, oh the Obama Man can
The Obama Man can 'cause he mixes it with love and makes the world taste good

Who can take a rainbow, wrap it in a sigh
Soak it in the sun and make a groovy lemon pie
The Obama Man, the Obama Man can
The Obama Man can 'cause he mixes it with love and makes the world taste good

The Obama Man makes everything he bakes satisfying and delicious
Now you talk about your childhood wishes, you can even eat the dishes

Oh, who can take tomorrow, dip it in a dream
Separate the sorrow and collect up all the cream
The Obama Man, oh the Obama Man can
The Obama Man can 'cause he mixes it with love and makes the world taste good

The Obama Man makes everything he bakes satisfying and delicious
Talk about your childhood wishes, you can even eat the dishes

Yeah, yeah, yeah
Who can take tomorrow, dip it in a dream
Separate the sorrow and collect up all the cream
The Obama Man, the Obama Man can
The Obama Man can 'cause he mixes it with love and makes the world taste good
Yes, the Obama Man can 'cause he mixes it with love and makes the world taste good
