Obama, Obama, and more Obama! A world-musicky Obama love-fest.
File under: Too much is not enough!
Perhaps there will soon be a musical genre simply known as Obama. Why not?
This show will be reprised in a special silly-music-bed and otherwise enhanced, streamlined version 7-8am on Tuesday November 4 as part of FMU's election day Electicle Dysfunction web stream.
This administration would like to thank the following people for their generous non-financial contributions to the cause:
Anastasia Tsioulcas / Anna Watson / Bob Godfried / CC Smith / DJ Lightbolt / DJ Neva / Ethan Donaldson / Jamie Propp / Jenifer Shepherd / Jim Phillips / Joel Davis / Jose Conde / Megan Romer / Patricia Herlevi / Ruben Gonzalez / Sylvain Leroux / Tom Frouge / Tom Pryor / Ukelilli a/k/a Lillian Parker
Here's an article I wrote for my day job (WNYC) that provides additional info on some of the songs: http://blogs.wnyc.org/culture/2008/11/03/obamas-multi-culti-musical-lovefest/

This Week's Playlist:
Men's Destiny:
Ich Will Obama Als Mann
Based on an old German pop song from the 60s, I think, at least in part.
Papa Michigan:
Barack Obama
Note the use of autotune
Rankin Cobra:
Obama
Slammer Dub Mix
Ira the Reggae Man: Barack Obama You're the Fountain of Hope
Tony Nyadundo:
Obama
This song is from Kenya, in the Ohangla style. It won the singer a Kenyan music award in the traditional music category.
DJ Lightbolt: Una Voz de Obama
King Short Shirt: Barack We Love You
Manze Dayila:
Change (The Barack Obama Song)
Haitian singer based in New York who came to the US by taking a raft from Haiti to Miami when she was 8 months pregnant! She's playing Joe's Pub Monday night.
Os Contemporaneos: Musica Buraka Obama
Sally WIthers and Pablo Peregrina: La OBAMbA
Du-Tels:
Obama
Peter Stamfel and Gary Lucas
Extra Golden: Obama / Hera Ma Nono / Thrill Jockey
Mighty Sparrow: Barack the Magnificent
Dr Flow: Obama Nuestro Presidente
Fojeba: Fired Up! Ready to Go!
Fula Flute:
Obama
Adaptation of traditional West African praise song style by NYC group centered on the tambin - the "Fula flute" of Guinea.
Samba Mapangala:
Obama Ubari Kiwe
(Obama be blessed). Samba, a very famous Congolese-born singer who spent many years in Kenya and now lives near Baltimore, MD, sings in Swahili and Minneapolis-based 14-year old rapper, Fanaka Ndege raps in English.
Jose Conde:
Respondele a Obama
Jose says this song was inspired by his Cuban-born mom, who like many Cubans who left for the US after Castro came in tends to vote Republican. But this time she's voting for Obama and that inspired Jose to write this song.
Ruben Gonzalez:
Voy Por Obama
Finally, a TRUE Obama love song. Sample lyrics in translation:
My girlfriend she’s crazy about Obama /
And she’s always in the mood /
I, of course, take advantage /
I don’t want the elections to ever come around / The TV is on all the time / And when the news come on /
She looks at him /
And she feels sensations /
I’m for Obama /
There is no other (option) /
He’s on fire /
He’s even gotten in my bed /
Naturally I’m for Obama /
For his presence on the screen /
With that look and with that shape /
And because he has my lady “in heat” /
I’m for Obama
Anyone Brothers Band:
Obama is Beautiful World
Representing for Obama, Japan! The YouTube video is a must-see - scroll down to watch it.
Louisiana for Obama:
Oui On Peut (Yes We Can)
An all-star Cajun / zydeco band plays the song written by fiddler Dirk Hill. Recorded at the Whirlybird in Opelousas, Louisiana.
La Chanson du Dimanche: O Barack
Shay Black:
There is No One as Irish as Barack O'Bama
This California pub sing-a-long actually has some controversy attached: It's a version of a song by the Irish group Hardy Drew and the Nancy Boys (which we will also play). The Irish group complained when Shay posted his version on YouTube without asking them for permission first.
Hardy Drew and the Nancy Boys:
There is No One as Irish as Barack O'Bama
Original version of the above.
Kenge Kenge:
Obama for Change
Kenge Kenge's music is basically the back-to-the-roots version of benga, the western Kenyan guitar band style that is a key component of Extra Golden's music.
Docta Musica Washi Wara: Barack Obama
DJ Kadhafi:
Obama Dance
West African DJ based in NYC
Chicky Micky:
I Got It From Obama
From Switzerland, I think, maybe. Well anyway, it's funny. I think. Another obvious song parody that I don't know, by the way...
Claire and the Reasons: Obama the Rainbow
