Favoriting January 9, 2009: Let's get this Friday started, right, quickly. (The No War / No BART Blue-on-Black violence MIX)

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

Oakland, CA this week where over the past two nights protesters have taken to the streets to express their anger over the BART police killing of unarmed 22 year old black passenger Oscar Grant in the early hours of New Years Day. Attorney John L. Burris, who represented 2Pac & Rodney King among others and is author of the book "Blue Vs Black", is handling the case.

Billy + Bryce  I fought the Old Codger + he won (Thinking of the name Bryce)   Favoriting     2009
Above is the US census exact graph of the popularity of the name Bryce (as in baby's been given the name) from 1900 to 2005 which - as you see - has grown in popularity in recent years. The boy's name Bryce \b-ry-ce\, also used as girl's name Bryce, is pronounced bryce. It is of Scottish origin, and its meaning is "of Britain". Variant of Brice which originated as a transferred use of the Scottish surname derived from the medieval given name. Bryce Canyon, in Utah, is one of the great natural splendors of the West. Bryce has 1 variant form: Brice. For more information, see also related names Bryson and Price. Baby names that sound like Bryce are Bruce, Bryse and Pryce. Peaceful rally/march NYC Jan 4 2009  recorded Sunday afternoon on Park Ave @ 59th   Favoriting     2009
This is a protest I stumbled upon last Sunday afternoon as it stalled on Park Ave near 59th Street. Nearly all men, they were stopped and singing this beautiful song. I had to record it - luckily I always carry a small digital recorder. As this parade, which stretched many blocks up and down Park Ave., stopped several groups of men gathered in circles (like emcees in a cipher) to sing their sad but beautiful songs. I felt drawn into this event - even though I did not understood a word been said/sung or even know what the protest was all about, or even who the people were. But I didn't need or want to know. I felt I understood the vibe and I know I really the music. That was enough for me..... The day before, down on 42nd Street, I had stumbled upon another group (Palestinians for peace) who were loudly protesting as they marched crosstown passing Grand Central Station. I figured this march was also related to what was going on in Gaza. But it didnt matter since I felt the vibe of what these men were singing and found their singing and percussion (a simple slapping of the hand on your chest in joint rhythm) - so much so that, as I recorded this piece, I joined in the mass song. The mass feeling reminded me of previous mass gatherings from the vibe at early Critical Mass cycles in SF to the old Full Moon Raves back in the day.......

DJ Latest News Update:

As reported in this morning's NYTimes the US economy shed 524,000 nonfarm jobs in December, according to the Labor Department; more than 11 million Americans are now unemployed, the most in nearly 25 years. The unemployment rate has now jumped 2.2 percentage points since April.

Where's Porkchop? I heard she hangs out here....Hey, did you read that silly-but-funny joke on the comments section of HotRod's playlist earlier today by Listener Jeremy - QUESTION:What do you say to a one legged hitchhiker? ANSWER: Hop in! (Is this thing on?)
  10:28am
BillyJam:

I just gotta say at this juncture (my fourth year at WFMU radio) that I sincerely love ( L U V) being a part of WFMU as a DJ and the reason I love it so much - and above all other stations I have been at - is clear to me now. It is simply because at this unique fuckin place (unlike any other station I have been affilated with - approx 15 over 25 years) that both the WFMU management and fellow staffers/volunteers and (more importantly) you the listeners are so amazingly cool and understanding with all of the DJs here and their programming choices -unconditionally so. I have been a DJ at all kinds of stations from college to community to commercial to pirate - and even at the most radically "alternative" stations I was on, I was always held to certain boundaries - no matter how subtle they superficially appeared. Even on non-commercial "freeform" stations (such as KALX or KUSF or KPFA or even Free Radio Berkeley) where I did various forms of alternative music shows if I went off in a "weird" or unpredictable direction (eg when I might bust out a thrash metal or punk track in the middle of a 2 hour hip-hop show) I would get so much grief and hater feedback from my otherwise dedicated listeners. Meanwhile here at WFMU no matter what I (or any DJ here) might do or play - anything, absolutely anything as weird or differennt as one could possibly imagine - nobody, not one person gives me or any DJ here any grief. Instead both the folks here at WFMU and the people who listen are so incredibly trusting and supportive that it it unreal. And that is why this station is so unlike anywhere else. Seriously. I love this fuckin station because it truly nurtures "freeform" programming - unconditionally. Thank-you so much WFMU!!!

the reason i love the bryce/billy dynamic, is that they represent my two aural loves (not to mention that doug's show kicks ass). I love moderist avante garde/ethnographic topography/elcectro-acoustic tomfoolery/ and party dance music of all stipes. If jace (/rupture) & jim (small change) were on on fridays, it would be aural overload. Thanks billy & bryce!
