"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

Yikes! I'm a 62 year-old man crying now!
Just remembering Lee "pulling on those" those long magnetic tapes in his Mellotron in the loft.
It seems like yesterday! I miss you! (Jimmy too!).

Lee and I talked to the ny finest about the lost bird ! nuff said hahaha ! I remember that mime at the loft too ! and yes Amber Waves at Bayshore Theater.
Wynand Van Emmerik:
Amber Waves. Show of Hands. Intuition. had lots of good times at 251 west 30th and after......
Robert Dobbs:
Wow! Just thinking of Amber Waves doing their rock opera "Justice and Sundown" at the band shell in Forest Park, Queens, and getting a fabulous "Village Voice review" for that show, ...or traveling "Upstate" to Brewster, to play the "Fore N' Aft", or how about their gigs Max's Kansas City?
Once we did a showcase at Max's for Mario Medius (The Big "M"), President of Manticore records, plus, at that time, Mario was managing Emerson Lake and Palmer.
Mario really flipped over the boys (Lee, Paul and Billy) and he wanted to record Amber Waves in Scotland.
Unfortunately, things didn't materialize for us, as The Big "M" (Mario) and ELP went their separate ways (...think also ELP broke-up, soon after our showcase? Just don't remember?)...
The band was really "hyped" with the prospect of going to Europe and record (if I remember, I think the studio was in a Scottish castle). The "ups and downs" of the music business!
I have not spoken to the surviving Amber Waves members (Paul & Billy) in many years.
Anyone out there, have a clue what Billy Callahan (drummer) is doing now? Or Paul (Bass, vocals) is up to? Hope they are both in great health?
I'd love to contact both! Help? Luv Robert

________________________________________
There are several points that I surprisingly have not
seen brought up as to the inherent value of looping.
I can expand my sonic palette, so to speak while
in the process. My expression is no longer limited by
the availability of other musicians.
Also, and for me the most important aspect, is
the ability to place myself in an environment where
I'm "working without a net"- I sold all the gear I had
that had an "undo" or "erase" function to achieve
this. Once your in your in. No pussyfooting.
I've played keyboards for over 30 years starting
with piano. The first stage is the "naive" phase where
you're getting your feet wet and there is a sense of
wonder in playing even (and because of) tho you have
no knowledge as to theory + technique. Simple things
sound great.
2nd stage we try to gain control, technique and
understanding of the music process. We want to be
respected as "musicians" and learn theory to make
"sense" of what we're doing. A lot of the fun is
replaced with a sense of small strides +
accomplishments laboriously exercising muscles
repetitiously. At this point I was a victim of my own
cliches.
3rd stage is the beauty. Technique becomes second
nature. All the knowledge + tools we've developed fade
to a place deep within us and we approach playing
music more like we did in the 1st phase where it was
actually exciting. No mental exercises. No being
clever. No illusion of control. And yet, we've
expanded our vocabularies so that we're capable of
much more but not bound by it.
Years ago I became bored with everything I
played. I tried many ways to "jump start" my creative
process. I traded in my extensive midi keyboard gear
and opted to go back to pure piano ala Keith Jarrett
(not as good but who is?)-That was great for 10
minutes 'till I had the old nagging feeling that there
was still something missing. Sold the piano gear and
tried to play the stick with a midi hookup. This was
an attempt to recapture the naive 1st stage and
recreate my early learning process. Got frustrated
after 8 months and gained a new appreciation for my
keyboard proficiency.
For me, music is discovery. It's exploration. I
create nothing but am afforded the privilege of being
a portal where the music can pass through. The music
is simply better than I'll ever be. Looping is about
fear and trust if I'm doing it right + keeping myself
(ego) out of it. There are no mistakes.
I currently use a Boomerang+ and a Lexicon
Vortex. Sound sources are a Wavestation SR and a Korg
N1r. All this is triggered by a Roland AX-1 controller
(strap-on) with a ribbon. The ribbon is essential for
it allows me to achieve a more intimate contact with
the notes for vibrato, pitch bend, hammer-ons,
whatever. I always envied the string players ability
to "touch" the sound source. A trade-off I suppose,
for most guitarists I know try hard to "change" their
sounds which comes easier to keyboardists.
I've gotten off track. Appropriate. Thanks for
letting me share. (:>
We loop because we can-

Brother Keith has been playing guitar for over 60 years so I figured he'd really flip out for a night of blues n' rock! I blew $200 for an upcoming gig at the "Hard Rock-Live" in Hollywood FLA. Tickets to see Joe Bonamassa and Co.
OMG! Joe Bonamassa was born in 1977! Yikes! I got a Jean Jacket from the "Loft Days" ...older than he! LOL!

A special "shout out" to John Allen for keeping this thread on his WFMU blog up and running for almost 4 years now! Thanks JA!!! (As you witnessed John, many were touched by the Maravels (Lee, Jimmy, Dina, Gene & Ginny) in so many ways!)...
Soon this John Allen thread that evolved into the life and passing of Jimmy and Lee (... and the Maravel family) will be 4 years old (in March) and I'm sure I can speak for all who have posted here, "John Allen, thank you!"...

Anyone else notice a recent TV commercial by Google, ...with a soundtrack that sounds very similar to Jimmy Maravel's "XYME" track?
(...Jimmy's track is above on John Allen's 3/11/09 playlist)
Bobby Dobbs:
It is called: Google Play: Play Your Heart Out (Official Logo Commercial)
If this works, "cut and paste" the You Tube link, listen to the track, then listen to Jimmy's "XYME" track on John Allen's 3/11/09 playlist and compare the two tracks: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kZPuMUAh5J4&list=PL_91S_h5BPa-p4gQO_lfJekd5PN-uHWZQ

Getting to know a group of young "Riverdale girls" (starting @ 15 and 16 years old), it took a short while (in those loft days) to notice how grounded all you girls were and how you enjoyed the life of young people, yet, ...all of you "had maturities, years ahead of your time"!
Many will not remember that I was 1/3 owner of a store on Bleeker Street (1/3 was Johnny's T-Shirt City, 1/3 was Kenny's Candles, and me, my 1/3 of the store was called, "Bob's Exotic Plants". (Nobody remembered "Bob's Exotic Plants", everyone remembered "Johnny's T-Shirt City" LOL!!!)...
So knowing Suzi from "the loft days", plus Suzi working some very "tuff-shifts" for Johnny (T-shirt City). And then becoming "Bleeker Street roommates" with Suzi. What a crew you Riverdale gals were: "Team Judy, Janessa, Melanie" LOL!!!! Along with "Team Paul, Lee and Billy". In my opinion, you three ladies kept the loft grounded, and the result was some unreal music by "Lee and Company".
One of my biggest regrets in my life, was not "keeping my eye on the ball", as I should have "pounded salt", instead of "going through the motions" of being a good manager!
Thinking back to all the "things I was into" at the same time (back in those loft days). Plus partying all the time. I do not have any idea how I did it! Looking back, I guess I was afraid of devoting all of my time to the band, for fear of not being secure monetarily).
What a mistake I made! Lee, Billy and Paul tapped something very special with their music. They needed my talents, full-time! And I didn't do it, and the months went by, and all of us know the score! Enough of me! LOL!!!
Back to Suzi: We shared some good times and she will always be part of my heart and have only fond memories of her (Yikes! I just remembered after 40 years Suzi's very strange brother, who "froze their dead pet cat"... weird! And her strange father, the dentist who saved jars "filled of gold crowns" when he retired, from all the his dental patients, over the years, that was soooooooo strange! LOL! I only wish I was able to email Suzi while she lived in Europe. If not for this cool John Allen thread, I would have known little.
Good luck to you three "Riverdale chicks" (Mel, Judy and Janessa!) LOL! Wishing you all a wonderful life and again, ...holiday wishes too!
P.S. BTW, Judy, what ever became of Paul Fredericks? Super nice guy, with a great voice and just "killer" on the bass! RBDJR@YMAIL.COM

I Believe in Father Christmas
(by Emerson, Lake and Palmer)
They said there'll be snow at Christmas
They said there'll be peace on earth
But instead it just kept on raining
A veil of tears for the virgin's birth
I remember one Christmas morning
A winters light and a distant choir
And the peal of a bell and that Christmas tree smell
And their eyes full of tinsel and fire
They sold me a dream of Christmas
They sold me a silent night
And they told me a fairy story
'till I believed in the Israelite
And I believed in Father Christmas
And I looked at the sky with excited eyes
'till I woke with a yawn in the first light of dawn
And I saw him and through his disguise
I wish you a hopeful Christmas
I wish you a brave new year
All anguish pain and sadness
Leave your heart and let your road be clear
They said there'll be snow at Christmas
They said there'll be peace on earth
Hallelujah noel be it heaven or hell
The Christmas you get you deserve
To all, wishing the "warm and fuzziest" holidays! Bobby Dobbs

Back in 2010 (Yikes!"...time does fly by"!) it was posted on this blog that: ("...Dina (birthname: Constance) is married to Chuck (Charles) Terzella and living in Penn Valley, CA, but no public phone number...").
I do not know if this is "still accurate info" about Dina? Hope this helps a little!

"Cut and paste" the following link. (It seems that Charles (Chuck) Terzella most likely moved to "upstate New York").
This link (below) gives you two locations: Kerhonkson, NY and Syracuse, NY. This link also lists two phone numbers. Hope one of these phone numbers "is current" and "finds you Dina"!

“I decided I didn’t want to complain any more, but do something: Teach kids and make a difference,” said UCCC student Dina Terzella of Kerhonkson. “I think they’ll look at a body of water a little differently now from what they can see with the naked eye.” [cite. Daily Freeman; November 15, 2000]
It's been so long now, and I can't quite remember when I first came to know of this, but Dina - excuse me, "Constance" - did go own to have a career in limnology or a similar, allied, earth and planetary science discipline.

Love, Peace and Happiness
(song by The Chambers Brothers)
All our love, peace, and happiness
We're gonna give to you now
All our love, peace, and happiness
And you can share yours too
All our love, peace, and happiness
We're gonna give to you, yeah
All our love, peace, and happiness
You can share yours too
It's a small step for man
But it's a giant leap
For all mankind
I got love, I got peace
I got happiness and
You can have it too, yeah
Together, we stand
Divided, we fall
Love, peace, and happiness
Is the best part of all
Oh, love, peace, and happiness
Oh, love, peace, and happiness
Oh, love, peace, and happiness
Oh, love, peace, and happiness
