'Cile, what a lovely choice for "your song". A bunkmate of mine in camp in 1970 told me about the Bonzos and "Hunting Tigers", probably my first step on a long road that led me to WFMU.
  1:10pm
stingy d:

my first step toward wanting a different set of musical values was ol dirty bastard. but i'm a young'n

when a man loves uhhhh wommunn,, aaaaauua augg yyyyaaaarr arrra uhhhu uh
  1:11pm
Cecile:

I think so. The first song we ever danced to was "nights in white satin", but we rejected it in favor of "Tigers". We sang it (and still sing it) on car trips.
  1:23pm
stingy d:

How could you not know about Twin Peaks? Even my gf, who is in her mid-20s and from Mexico loves Twin Peaks. Then again, she's a David Lynch fiend.
  1:40pm
Cecile:

ngh, I don't can't even get wound up about that anymore. It doesn't even seem like there's any kind of common pop culture anymore- just little cults and fandoms...
  1:40pm
annie:

charm..... i'm bummed. totally...
  1:41pm
annie:

ok, folks, gonna hoof it to another exciting episode of 1001 nights..
  1:47pm
Kevin in BayRidge:

Parq & Cecile,
Sad thang is... I bonded with the Bonzo's right on commercial FM (WPLJ circa early 70's) compliments of Scelsa & company.

Different frakkin woild!
Viva FMU for filling an ancient void!!!
  1:48pm
stingy d:

wfmu keeping the cult in culture. otherwise i guess its monolithture

"Front loader you know my need is urgent. Front loader I've got all my detergent!" - N. Innes
  1:53pm
Cecile:

Kevin in BR, i hear you.

I grew up with crappy AM in the 70s, but they would still let the hippies play prog, AOR deep tracks (usually better than the singles) and punk records at night. Had a huge influence on me.
  1:57pm
Carmichael:

I will always love Twin Peaks. In fact, I saw Blue Velvet for the umpteenth time last night. The lines are almost as good as those you'll find in Heathers or Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
  1:58pm
BSI:

oh sweet baby monkey god, thankies for the vitamin-like drone here...
  2:01pm
stingy d:

i'm a baby and i remember watching twin peaks as a little dude. just resting my eyes. and i've been through many a twin peaks marathon.
  2:01pm
Carmichael:

As for crappy radio, I'll never forget the set I heard on KROY as a 10 year old (and a foreigner):

Smokey Robinson, "Tears of a Clown"
Sammy Davis, Jr., "I Gotta Be Me"
Sgt. Barry Sadler, "The Ballad of the Green Berets"

After that experience, I vowed to stay up late and surf the night-time AM waves for faraway exotic music, instead of the local crap. I found XPRS just across the Mexican border.

That was my first alternative music experience.
  2:01pm
Ike:

This is like a creepier, homemade take on the Johnny Cash remix by Apparat, and it sounds almost like it's straight out of the wonderful Twin Peaks.

Cecile, thanks for spelling 70s correctly. As for the Bonzos, well, they're just stuck getting spell-raped forever I guess.
  2:03pm
Cecile:

so you heard it, you heard it, you heard it on the X, Carm?
  2:03pm
Carmichael:

Ike, thank you for your never-ending apostrophe vigilance and your service to our language.
  2:04pm
stingy d:

ike, trstu em yuo aer teh olny spel-rapist out there
  2:04pm
Carmichael:

That is EXACTLY right, Cecile!
  2:05pm
lolcat:

stingee i liek ur speling
  2:05pm
Cecile:

Nice, Carm!
  2:06pm
Sean Daily:

Not even close to first comment! Woo hoo!
  2:07pm
Cecile:

I think only you and I like that Glands of External Secretion record, Scott.
  2:12pm
Cecile:

I think Odessa is possibly the strangest record made by a major rock band that doesn't descend into complete contract-voiding noise. I need to pick this one up
  2:13pm
Sean Daily:

"Edison" is probably the best piece of non-commercial commercial music I've ever heard.
  2:14pm
stingy d:

i've always hesitated on getting odessa. maybe i should???
  2:15pm
G.:

did broadcast/transmitter just crash to white noise? or is it my equipment here at home?
  2:15pm
Cecile:

Yeah. Exactly.

Me, too, stinge.

I think I have buy it now because every time someone plays a track, I go "WTF?" But in a good way.
  2:16pm
Ike:

Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy, are you fixing the dog whistle on 91.1?! Are you fixing it? Huh? Huh? Oh boy! I AM EXCITED! I will be able to listen on a Walkman again!
  2:17pm
G.:

it came back for two seconds, then white noise again
  2:17pm
Ike:

That is, assuming all goes well. If that's what you're actually doing.
  2:17pm
Cecile:

"I got a rubber, he's my new frown?"
  2:18pm
G.:

you're back lol
  2:20pm
Ike:

Hey G., did they fix the stereo dog whistle? I can't get the air signal here at work so I can't check.
  2:20pm
C:

is there a little howlin wolf comp out or something? i've heard him played a bunch this week and would love to pick something up. i was only able to buy a couple of 7" after a show but want more!
  2:26pm
G.:

not sure; i'm a ways from the transmitter, so sometimes when listening over-air i hear fuzz and glitches come and go at some times of day -- someone else could probably comment better on sound issues??
  2:26pm
Sean Daily:

This Little Howlin' Wolf rocks in too many ways to count.
  2:27pm
Glenn L:

C, there are two comps of old LHW 7"'s available thru Here See/ True Vine. I think that's what the label is called.
It's the Nautical Almanac people. Really really great stuff!
Especially - vol. 1
  2:32pm
C:

Awesome! Thanks, Glenn.
  2:32pm
stingy d:

ike, spell zarawuhtssictluy
  2:33pm
Glenn L:

You got it, C. Enjoy!
  2:34pm
Cecile:

good work, Glenn!
  2:37pm
Glenn L:

Thanks, Cecile. I had a great time.
Thee oh Sees are currently rocking my world.
I think I have a NEW favorite band.
  2:40pm
Cecile:

Isn't that great when it happens?
Every time I think I get too jaded to follow music, there's alway someone new or undiscovered or unfamiliar that gets my interest piqued again
  2:41pm
Kevin in BayRidge:

Cecile,
Being a teenager with "a taste for the bizarre"-FZ, in the Metro NY area, just as FM had a short greening period worked out ok. As long as FMU finally came to the rescue!... Otherwise, who the hell knows what would have happened!!!
  2:42pm
Cecile:

YESYESYES!
Yes, I have a secret fondness for Billy Squier.
  2:43pm
Cecile:

a friend of mine would always pick out "everybody wants one" for his punk rock friends in the 80s. When they'd go "dude, that song rocks.! It sounds familiar." Then he would drop the bomb.
  2:43pm
dc pat:

SCOTT!! CUT IT OUT! I'M TRYING TO CONCENTRATE!
  2:44pm
Doug from DC:

He's "stroking" our pop sensibilities.
  2:44pm
Ike:

<grumble>
  2:45pm
Cecile:

I know Kevin.

I know I quote FotC a lot here, but I read in an interview where FotC's Jemaine Clement saying something like, "when i was little I didn't think I liked music. Turned out I had never heard any good music."

that was a lot of our experiences here, I gather.
  2:46pm
Cecile:

thanks for throwing a bone to us ex-heshers, Scott.
  2:47pm
Scott:

Good ol' reliable Ike.
  2:47pm
Pearly Sweets:

Unga Bunga... 2 hour and fifty minute meeting... I am done with you! Second long ass meeting this week.
  2:48pm
dc pat:

Ho jeeze...now I REALLY can't concentrate. This visitations/BB song kills me. Puts me somewhere in the vicinity of a movie like Lilith and For a Few Dollars More....
  2:49pm
Doug from DC:

Oh, I'm psyched. Just secured a ticket to see Throbbing Gristle on Thursday, and got two days off work to do it.
  2:51pm
dc pat:

this is my favorite song on Earth right now.
  2:52pm
Elton John & Neil Sedaka:

Big...Biiiig...
Blood...Bloooood...
  2:53pm
Scott:

me too pat, kinda makes me wanna die and go with it.
  2:54pm
dc pat:

Scott: Exactly! so, where do I get that again? Do I have to send a telegram to Big Blood or something?
  2:54pm
Parq:

Is Kev from BR still here? I started listening to PLJ just a couple of *months* before they went playlist. I switched to 'NEW-FM, who by 1979 were running the naked blonde commercial I mentioned during Trouble's show. Then it was college radio, and ultimately, WFMU all the way. (Sorry, Freiwilliger, I know you don't like overly effusive fans, but what can I say?)
  2:57pm
scott:

pat, yeah, i think so. you can email em thru their myspace
http://www.myspace.com/bigblood24
  2:58pm
Cecile:

this grouper track was beautiful
  2:59pm
dc pat:

ok, right, they're "friends" of mine...
  2:59pm
Ike:

Am I *that* reliable? Would you have thought I'd like Trent's show? I have cheesy mainstream guilty pleasures, but nobody at FMU ever hits on them except for Trent. Does reliable also mean predictable? That's troubling. I need to bury my ego under a damn fine slice of cherry pie, dammit.
  3:00pm
Sean Daily:

Yeth! THCREAM, my loverly! THCREAM FOR YOUR LIFE! Ah ha ha ha ha ha ha ha...
  8:06pm
billyjam:

as many before me have said Thank God for the Archives! Another good show Scott -
