Back in 1979, I made the decision to accept Dr Demento as my personal savior. Since then, with the help of his apostles Spike, Al, Stan and Black-Eyed Susan Brown, I have made it my mission to spread the Gospel of the Firesign and the Word of the Waller. Please join me and my fellow seekers as we find the Wisdom we crave and the Rapture we deserve. A new sermon every Tuesday (and NO collection plate!).

Artist Track Comments
Happiness Boys  AS A PORCUPINE PINES FOR ITS PORK   Favoriting Billy Jones (Tenor) & Ernie Hair (Baritone)were the highest paid radio performers of their time (like $1250 a week). Took their name from the candy store chain that sponsored them.
Leroy Carr & Scrapper Blackwell  I CARRIED WATER FOR THE ELEPHANT   Favoriting Carr (piano) died mysteriously at age 35. Blackwell (guitar) was shot in an unsolved mugging.
George Olson & His Music  DOIN THE RACCOON   Favoriting George and the boys cash in on the collegiate raccoon coat craze of the 20s. I got a boatload of racoons here at Addlewood Studios, let's make a deal.
Bing Crosby + Louis Jordan  YOUR SOCKS DON'T MATCH   Favoriting One side of the only record these two made together (other side follows)

Bing Crosby + Louis Jordan  HEP HEP-DE-HOOTIE   Favoriting The other side of their partnership. The record reached #17 on the White charts, but didn't even show up on the Race charts.
5 Jones Boys  MR GHOST GOES TO TOWN   Favoriting Originally came from Carbondale, IL, to LA to seek their fortune. Flip side of "Doing the Suzi Q" on Variety (#522) recorded April of 1937. Later teamed up with the Four Blackbirds (see below) for a few records (including two with Cliff Edwards)
4 Blackbirds  BLACK-EYED SUSAN BROWN   Favoriting Out of Jefferson HS in Louisiana, recorded this in May of 1935 on Vacalion (#2943). It was this very record that pushed KBC over the hill to become the deranged, obsessive collector that he later became. History can indeed be made in 3-minute clumps.
Spike Jones & His City Clickers  TENNESSEE WALTZ   Favoriting Let's just get this out of the way once and for all right now: Born Lindley Armstrong Jones on December 14, 1911 and died on May 1, 1965 at age 53 (he was a chronic chain-smoker). He is buried in Culver City CA, which is also the home of the Dr Demento Show. Coincidence? I think not.
Red Ingle + Natural 7  HE CAME TO TOWN AS HOT AS A $2.00 PISTOL   Favoriting Ernest Jansen Ingle (1906-65) played with the Goldkette & Weems orchestras and later joined Spike's band as the frontman. He's responsible for most of the artwork used by Spike at the time. Quit the City Slickers in 1946 in a salary dispute and thus began the age of the Natural 7.
Red Ingle + Natural 7  PEARLY MAUDE   Favoriting
Harry Humphries  SANTA CLAUS HIDES IN YOUR PHONOGRAPH   Favoriting No info on Harry, but if I were a kid back then, I'd be scared shitless. Later done by Ernest Hair.
Jerry Colonna  CAN'T YOU HEAH ME CALLIN CAROLINE?   Favoriting You've seen him lots of times: with his trademark handlebar mustaches and bug-eyes. Discovered on Bing Crosby's Kraft Music Hall (which also gave us Victor Borge and Spike Jones). Appeared in a Monkees episode then promptly had a stroke. For more, see WFMU's Beware of the Blog Feb 4, 2007 post by Listener Kliph Nesteroff.
Ada Jones  WILHEM THE GROCER   Favoriting Born in Lancashire, England in 1893 and died in 1922 at age 48. Noted for her clear voice and many dialects (especially Irish) and did many duets with the likes of Billy Murray and Len Spencer. For more, see mainspringpress.com.

Billy Murray and Ada Jones  WHEN PRISCILLA TRIES TO HIT HIGH C   Favoriting Billy Murray was a product of Philadelphia. Noted for his clear tenor voice (which was perfect for shouting into a megaphone, which is how they made records a century ago)
Billy Murray  I LOVE A PIANO   Favoriting
Billy Murray  I LOVE ME   Favoriting
Billy Murray  CHILI BEAN   Favoriting
Billy Murray  SHE'S GOT GREAT IDEAS   Favoriting
Billy Murray  HE'D HAVE TO GET UNDER ...   Favoriting Full title "He'd Have to Get Under, Get Out and Get Under, to Fix Up His Automobile" See, in those days, you could actually fix your own car without a PhD
Billy Murray  WHICH SWITCH IS THE SWITCH, MISS, FOR IPSWITCH?   Favoriting They had orperators for their cell phones then and you couldn't dial yourself. (also cell phones weighed 35 pounds!)
Billy Murray and Ada Jones  OH, YOU MYSTERIOUS MOON   Favoriting Try to imagine this on a Vaudeville stage.

Woody Herman  OOCH! OOCH! A GOON ATTACH!   Favoriting A weird take on another familiar tune (listen closely)
