Listener comments!

  4/14 8:26pm
ALF of Hip Hop Slam:

Is Icewater peeping Jim and Karla's "Storefront" in the pic? NICE!
  4/14 8:56pm
BillyJam:

yes ALF, he is peeping (one of) the new Jim and Karla Murray books (the other one is Miami Graffiti - the topic of a future show)....This pic was taken after the recently pre-recorded session by the two Left Coast based artists - en route back to where they were staying in NYC. It was on the E train heading uptown........>>>Note to other listeners: DJ ALF will be on the show next week, April 24th live from Queens
  4/15 11:37am
Bad R☺nald:

Jam, Jam, Jam - Jam's the man
Jam, Jam, Jam - I am a fan

Big love, great show, thanks Billy!
  4/15 10:27pm
Nora Daily:

fourth comment .....Woo Hooo....evem beat my bastard son Sean.....He didnt take his meds this week so he is hella slow......fuck yeah
  8:36pm
Kari Ferrell:

hey BIllyJam, I love your show, almost as much as Marty "Menthol" McSorley's. Thanks for posting my pic. Tweet me back hon. I have to ask you something......it's kinda urgent
  12:56am
BillyJam:

Hey there WFMU listeners - today's show is dedicated to diehard listener and dedicated commenter Cecile and will feature an interview/performance from Shing02 and DJ Icewater + a long lost interivew with RZA from '93 just as the Wu Tang were about to drop their debut album.....>>The 3 topics today for the comments include A) the topic of COMMENTS - do you think they are a nice addition to these playlists? Do you miss them when some DJs do not turn them on? If so, why? And what would you like to see changed with the WFMU Playlist Comments feature - if anything? - The second topic today is one inspired by a YouTube member over in the UK Doyvidtheginger who is going to post a comment here on the state of music video access via YouTube in the UK where many music videos are blocked for viewing or hearing (as you know different rules apply in different countries when it comes to Internet access). In the US you may have noticed how Warner has blocked all videos on YouTube and how Universal has made embedding impossible. I have seen some videos where the record label allows the video footage but deletes the song audio. Any thoughts on where this is going? IE hte issue of copyright and YouTUbe and simialr video sharing sites?..........And finally the third topic of the day: Know any good jokes? They can be dirty or clean. Share here in the comments if U got em. (Are you having a laugh?) I will be playing some stand up skits throughout this show in keeping with this topic......thanks + dont forget Sunday is 4/19 and Monday is 4/20 (cough cough)!!!!
  2:10am
Lil Baby Trig:

yo Billy Jam - whadup foolio? Sorry I have not been able to make it down to your show to hang out and part-take in the madness but my moms (Gov Sarah Palin) has been a real bitch lately (pardon my Alaskan) but fer reals she has not allowed me or Bristol or any of us out due to all the media stuff lately......Anyways I have taken full advantage of the time to learn to read and have gotten (on da unda) a subscription to the NYTimes which is secretly dleivered to my crib each morn.....Did you see the piece in yesterday's Times? It is true but still shocking. And even if it is about my own moms I must share with your listeners who missed thiis story since it is absolutely 100% true. It reads that "The governor recently nominated Wayne Anthony Ross, a board member of the National Rifle Association, to be Alaska’s attorney general. Mr. Ross, who is expected to be confirmed, has told lawmakers that he opposes many federal efforts in Alaska like increasing protections for polar bears and beluga whales and limiting resource development. Years ago, he described gay men and lesbians as “degenerates.”
As a private lawyer, Mr. Ross said, he lived his initials. “My license plate says, ‘WAR,’ ” Mr. Ross said in an interview after a recent confirmation hearing. “And my wife’s license plate says, ‘MRS WAR.’ ”

Yet even Mr. Ross offered a mild critique of the governor. In the hearing, he said he had urged her “to open better communication between the Legislature and her office.” He said he thought Ms. Palin risked appearing that she had been cowed by critics — “treed by Chihuahuas,” as he put it — and that “she needs to smile more.” - Shiaat, aint that a biaaatch? I tell you if it were not for the NY Times and Family Guy and the 2Pac songs Bristol sings me to sleep each night I would go out of my mind up here in the great white north.....But as soon as I can walk, I'm outta here......expect to hear from me come Feb 2010 Billy Jam - peace and keep rocking the beats maine.....

Timi Dz Nutz:

  3:03pm
Cecile:

I like the comments as they am, Billy Jam.

SINGING!
  3:05pm
Sean Daily:

Billy Jam sounded a bit like Dennis Hopper in "Apocalypse Now". One through nine, Billy Jam, no maybes, no supposes, no fractions. You can't travel in space, you can't go out into space, you know, without, like, you know, uh, with fractions - what are you going to land on - one-quarter, three-eighths? What are you going to do when you go from here to Venus or something? That's dialectic physics.

Oh, and... not even close to first comment! Woo hoo!
  3:05pm
barney:

Is that the DJ once known as Manila Ice?
  3:07pm
G.:

yep, he did a hiphop version of "i love you, you love me"
  3:13pm
Cecile:

I have a load or stuff to run thru the scanner (darkly) but I will keep an ear out and be popping in when I can. Great show so far, Billy!
  3:14pm
Clueless:

My doctor said I have acute angina.

Was he coming on to me?
  3:15pm
Parq:

Ahem. Topic 3.

The year is 2012 and the United States of America has recently elected the first woman President. Even more incredible, she is also Jewish.

She calls up her mother a few weeks after election day and says, "So, Mom, I assume you will be coming to my inauguration?"

"I don't think so. It's a ten hour drive, your father isn't as young as he used to be, and my gout is acting up again. Plus you can’t get good food on the highway."

"Don't worry about it Mom, I'll send Air Force One to pick you up and take you home. And a limousine driven by a Secret Service Agent will pick you up at your door."

"I don't know. Everybody will be so fancy-schmantzy, what on earth would I wear?"

"Mom" replies the President-elect, "I'll make sure you have a wonderful gown. I will have Isaac Mizrahi personally come to the house and custom-make an original gown for you.”

"Isaac, that sounds like a nice normal boy. But kinder," Mom complains, "you know I can't eat those rich foods you and your friends like to eat. I get gas."

The President-to-be responds, "Don't worry Mom. The entire affair is going to be handled by the best caterer in New York, kosher all the way. And I will personally make sure they cook yours directly for you. Mom, I really want you to come."

So Mom reluctantly agrees and on January 21, 2013, she is on the dias as her daughter is about to be sworn in as President of the United States of America.

The new president's mother looks around, and leans over to a senator sitting next to her.

"You see that woman over there with her hand on the Bible, in the nice suit, becoming President of the United States?"

The Senator smiles, and with a twinkle is his eye, whispers back, "Yes I certainly do."

"Her brother's a doctor!"
  3:15pm
barney:

oh busted. It looks like there's a newer DJ Manila Ice and that I made essentially the same comment in Feb. 2008.

O-Dub and Icewater used to make my day on KALX.
  3:15pm
LISA M:

Hey Billy! Im live from Oakland! Holla! lol... Just got here last night
  3:17pm
BSI:

effing whee, that was a fun piece.
  3:20pm
GP:

Hey, Billy J..good to hear you..been awhile since I have been able to tune in on a Friday.

Congratulations Cecile.

re: comments...wish every DJ would leave them on, sometimes it is the only way to learn about the music from the input of the different listeners.
  3:23pm
?:

in keeping with the ethnic stereotyping joke theme:

q: why don't WASPs like orgies?

a: too many god damned thank you notes
  3:26pm
Mr. Kotter:

Topic 1: I don't mind when the DJ doesn't turn on comments. DJ Knows Best.

I'd like some way to hide the comments when I don't feel like seeing them/participating. Sometimes they're *too* absorbing, and I need to concentrate on other things.
  3:33pm
Cecile:

Whoa!
  3:35pm
Bad Ronald:

Hats of to Cecile, Billy and all involved in the awesomeness that is Put the Needle On the Record!

Now from the not that there's anything wrong with it category...

Q: Why are there so many gay fillipinos?
A: They can't get their fillipinas.

<groan>
  3:39pm
JCityJensen + David Lee Roth:

Bus' it! with the nice beat
  3:41pm
LISA M:

aww.. yeah a little Boogie Down beats for your pleasure.. Nice show Billy!
  3:41pm
Pearly Sweets:

I always enjoy the comments and find that I pay even more attention to a show (for better or worse) when the comments are on.
  3:41pm
Sean Daily:

About that sign at the bottom of the playlist... Turns out a 3 baht Valium is 8 U. S. cents. And 300 baht methadone is US$8.48.

I'm moving to Thailand.
  3:45pm
G.:

A fair chunk of Europe (with solid pensions) retires to Thailand now. I know a couple of retired professors there (Belgium, Germany). I forget which member of Throbbing Gristle talked about living there now, and listening to NE Thai country music, on Fabio's show two days ago.
  3:45pm
SeanG:

Comments are great--extra dimension and random coincidence/juxtaposition to the show
  3:47pm
Marshall Stacks:

G., I think it was Sleazy (Peter Christopherson).
  3:49pm
G.:

There ya go -- would be confirmable in Fabio's archive, and maybe on the www/wikipedia too...
  3:52pm
Cecile:

this is too funny
there are some co-workers behind me talking about how Rush is for the dungeons and dragons set

And Busta is going rah rah like a dungeon dragon
  3:53pm
Ike:

The food in Thailand is also CHEAP. And great. Brilliant (and popular) street cart meals for 30-90 baht (about $1-$3). Maybe I'll retire there (or in Laos) in 30 years, if the Red Shirts and Yellow Shirts aren't still having a mini-civil war by then.
  3:55pm
GP:

Got the office shakin it Billy J!
  3:57pm
G.:

I'm told by someone who lives there (Thailand) that not only is the restaurant food really cheap there, it's less accommodated to euroamerican tastes than Thai cuisine in the west. As one would expect!

There's an adjective in Thai for hot (spicy), and also another adjective that translates as "Thai-hot," meaning you'd never serve it to a foreigner unless you (the foreigner) can convince the restaurant that that's really, really what you want.
  4:00pm
Parq:

Way-digging this Betty mix, by the way.
  4:01pm
Cecile:

I love this Euro-trashtastic mix.
Makes me want to go to Ibiza and not get let into clubs.
  4:05pm
Ike:

G., the Thai adjective is "pet", or "pet pet" for extra spicy. Or "pet maak maak." That's one of the few Thai phrases I learned from a useful "talking" website before going.

And yeah, most Thai restaurants around here are watered-down and Americanized (though still pretty good), but you can get the real thing (or approaching its level) at Sripraphai in Queens. But the secret's out. There's a line out the door on Fri. and Sat. nights.

DANCE!
  4:07pm
Cecile:

we have a place that's more authentic - just started here. The flavors are awesome, and there's lots of unusual ingredients.

BAILE!
  4:11pm
G.:

Thanks for the tip -- I know Manhattan and Brooklyn more than Queens! Srip. is on my to-do list now...

The irony is that there was no hot pepper in the modern sense in Asian cuisine till Europeans picked peppers up from the Americas. Indian (India) cuisine for example used mustard and black pepper for heat till a very few hundred years ago.

Culinary miscegenation obviously works just fine, though!
  4:11pm
Carmichael:

Re-arriving at FMU, landing on Planet Billy. Cecile, it looks like you are officially The Shit. Way to go! Or, way to be! It's Friday afters for me, time to finish procrastinating.

I settled for some salad rolls. Boring me.
  4:12pm
Cecile:

  4:16pm
Marshall Stacks:

Thai is one of the world's great cuisines, on a level with French, Indian,... name your favorite refined/documented cuisine.

Funerary cookbooks. Thais are so into food that it's customary to hand out books of the deceased person's best recipes at funerals.

Hey Glenn, not to bring up something annoying. But. Did you spot that comments-board apology to you left right after Diane's show ended yesterday?

I never did get what his issue was, but by the time he apologized neither did he. So I guess we'll never know!

I've never been a devotee of his music in general, although it's not any better or worse than the other stuff of that era. Many of his music formulas are instantly recognizeable, though, and that's the important thing to him, I suppose.
  4:45pm
Cecile:

I just really like Free for All. The rest, not so much, but Free for all is a great jam. Worth paying a full quarter to have a copy of the album.

Wish I knew what the name of the beat you were playing towards the end. An analogy was made to it being like a car speeding up and slowing down or something like that. I woke up with the beat in my head.
