Pearly Sweets:

Mmmm is this a mint green or more of a seafoam?
  3:16pm
Joe Steele:

If I saw seafoam this color, I'd stear clear.
  3:16pm

Good day, Irene et al. As an old folkie, I say thanks for playing these tunes!

You're playing the songs that were played at Pete's Birthday Party last nitght!!!! were you there??? INCREDIBLE CONCERT! Please play some Richie Havens!! He brought the house down at Mad Square Gard!!!
  3:19pm
Carmichael:

And little Mr. iPod coughed up some Phil Ochs yesterday too. Hadn't heard "The Bells' in decades.
  3:20pm
Irene:

Bingo, Melissa! I was there and I'm still stunned. I'll get to Richie in a little while.
  3:20pm
Lord Buckley:

Jeff's OK, but he is no royalty like me. You dig?
  3:23pm
Unclear on the Concept:

Don't you realize this is a Communist song?
  3:24pm
dc pat:

GO COMMIES!!!
  3:27pm
north guinea hills:

although jeff may not be royalty, neither is lord buckley, he is an aristocrat, not a royal.
  3:32pm
Parq:

Using a pair of early-60s garden shears to sever a cable carrying enough juice to power an electric rcok band and PA would have made for a great visual, as long as you were standing far enough away. It's very unlikely, however, that we'd be talking about PS in the present tense now.
  3:35pm
WinstonSmith:

Today is 4-May, the 39th anniversary of the massacre at Kent State. 14-May will be the 39th anniversary of the susequent massacre at Jackson State. RIP to those who lost their lives in the senseless violence.
  3:35pm
Carmichael:

Speaking of Richie Havens, I bought his album Alarm Clock when it first came out, and still play it to this day. And I will again tonight, looks like ....
  3:41pm
ivan:

Billy Bragg is kind of lame and dumb, you should have picked a better version of the internationale
  3:47pm
Irene:

Ivan, I gotta say don't agree one bit. Just see him play live once and you may change your mind. But you're entitled to your opinion.
  3:47pm
Carmichael:

What was that whistling at the end of Rhymney? I was half-paying attention and thinking ocarina. Was I close?
  3:48pm
Irene:

I think it was ocarina. The instruments aren't listed.
  3:52pm
dc pat:

Billy Bragg is ok with me too.
  3:53pm
Peter K.:

"Never Wed an Old Man," huh? I sure am glad you didn't take that advice!
  3:53pm
+billy bragg+:

billy bragg and wilco album (Mermaid Ave.) made be respect billy bragg...for sure
  3:54pm
Arthur Avenue:

She swallowed the lie because she was a detatched, complacent, television-addicted American.
  3:55pm
Fellow Geezer:

Hello, Peter, I'm sure she's just as glad.
  3:58pm
north guinea hills:

wow, a fave malvina reynolds tune... (little boxes)
  4:00pm
Arthur Avenue:

Or perhaps she was a detatched, complacent, television-addicted American because she swallowed the lie.
  4:02pm
dc pat:

television is ok with me too.
  4:08pm
Carmichael:

Well, this is turning into a full-fledged hootenanny. Cool.
  4:10pm
Parq:

'Rene, if you're doing a whole Weavers set, I hope self-consciusness won't lead you to shy away from "Goodnight Irene". My late parents regarded it as "their song" and for that reason, I am very sentimental about it.
  4:12pm
Kent Downing:

This Pete Seeger stuff is absolutely fabulous. Thank you! I heard Pete's 90th birthday party was fun.
  4:13pm
James in Toronto:

I must disagree with Parq. Goodnight Irene was just a throw-away pop tune in the end. Let the Weavers be remembered for their dissemination of protest songs, not for their (very rare) lapses into pap. Goodness knows, we need protest songs just as much now as we did then. The job ain't done...
  4:15pm
James in Toronto:

Irene, have you got "If You Miss Me At The Back Of The Bus"? Pretty please?
  4:17pm
Pearly Sweets:

I always want a screaming blues sax to come in on this song.
  4:18pm
James in Toronto:

My apologies to Parq. I misread his/her post, thinking it to mean that Goodnight Irene was "the Weavers' song", rather than Mother and Father's song. Although the North American public did consider it the band's signature tune, I consider that a shame when it's placed next to the body of their work. Far be it from me to interfere in Parq's family's enjoyments! Sorry.
  4:18pm
Pearly Sweets:

robust and sleazy
  4:21pm
Parq:

Ahem. James, my own family sentimentality aside, do you really want to call this classic Leadbelly song "pap" and 'a throw-away pop tune"? If so, I suggest you go back to the original Pete & Arlo live recordings from the mid-70s and listen to Arlo introducing his performance of that song. (Not sure whether it was on an album or in a PBS broadcast.)
  4:25pm
Melissa Stern:

there is a snarky review of the concert in the NYT (online) It was as if the the critic HAD to piss on the evening.... the outpouring of passion, music, activism and history as well as fucking amazing singing was really deeply moving. Too bad that the NYT critic was so uncomfortable with so much genuine feeling. HAPPY BIRTHDAY PETE!!!
  4:27pm
James in Toronto:

Parq: I have that Pete and Arlo concert on vinyl. A classic, especially Arlo's take on "Walkin' Down the Line" and Pete's "The Golden Vanity." I know Leadbelly's Goodnight Irene is likewise a classic, and I'm aware of the context he gave it. But I draw the line at what the Decca label made the Weavers do with it, which was to water it down to near-nothingness, make it a pop "hit", and obscure the original depth of it. Not to mention those bloody session string orchestras! But again, I didn't mean to tramp all over your family sentimentalities. They're as valid as anyone else's. Cheers!
  4:29pm
James in Toronto:

Thank you, Irene, thank you!
  4:32pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

Thanks for the Pete Seeger show, Irene! Somehow it's taken me 'til this afternoon ro realize how awesome Pete Seeger is. I guess I'm a late bloomer in some regards :-)
  4:33pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

better late than never--continued musical growth!
  4:34pm
tim:

Wonderful.
  4:35pm
Cecile:

I have to say that my family were not folkies, and I grew up with country and bluegrass and adult contemporary which stresses stoicism and the status quo, and I was more atttracted to more exotic musics as a result.

However, as much as this music isn't really part of my life, Seeger's work, activism and ability to galvanize good people to do good things are impeccable. Happy 90th Pete.
  4:37pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

I guess I never listened closely to the lyrics. I'm aware he didn't write all these songs, but I like that he sang them. I like the politics/philosophy behind Little Boxes, There Once Was a Woman..., and Hallelujah! I'm a Bum.
  4:40pm
nostalgic:

thanks for a wonderful show, irene. my mom used to play her old weavers and seeger records for my sister and me when we were kids. it really takes me back, a little weepy at work, really...
  4:44pm
Edzo:

He's making a new album with Lemmy & Jandek
  4:44pm
nostalgic:

could you throw in "oh, had i a golden thread" if you have a chance?
  4:47pm
too much of a good thing?:

r we there yet?
  4:48pm
Swami:

Seeger! Play "Fire Lake"! "Old Time rock and Roll"! "Night Moves"!
Seriously though, "The Water is Wide" Tune is very moving,
  4:49pm
Parq:

[smiles gratefully]
  4:50pm
annie:

i love you all, but i just can't listen. pete seegered out. just checked in to see what was playing... i love pete for what he's done and his activism, i just am weary of the tribute.. i had a cape cod dj get on my case cause i was not grateful enough. oh, well...
  4:50pm
James in Toronto:

Okay, Parq. With this version, now you're talking!
  4:50pm
Farfel:

Anybody seen that Seeger guy? He owes me a hundred 'n fifty bucks. I cleaned out his gutters and he stiffed me!
  4:52pm
Arthur Avenue:

The Water Is Wide is a beautiful adaption of a traditional melody. It is really as great as Neil's use of the melody for Mother Earth. The radio tribute is really nice, thanks Irene for doing it.
  4:57pm
annie:

i was just thinking maybe i'm tired of it cause the activism was just wasted, it seems nothing was achieved. today being the anniversary of kent state.. i'm very discouraged.
  4:58pm
Busby:

You could probly find him in one of them strip clubs on the West side. He's big into 'em
  5:02pm
cecile:

are you kidding, annie?
I think less was achieved then what people wanted, but would I go back before the 60s and live? No. Way.
  5:05pm
Carmichael:

Hang in there, Annie. I agree about O.D.-ing on Seeger these last few weeks, but it brings me back to a purer musical time.

And maybe we won't quite "overcome", but there are some changes happening.
  5:05pm
Notlob:

He cruises 11th ave. in a Red Cadillac Escalade. Always smokin' a blunt.
  5:06pm
ta da:

i think id liked to have lived in the 100s bc....in rome
  5:07pm
annie:

i'm suffering from an overdose of something.. perhaps just a building up of the crap we have witnessed over the last ten years or so. funny, i continue to tell my kid and his friends not to stop. .. i'll be okay, just have to move past this.. i dig ya carm, i dig ya. i loved singing all those songs since i was a kid! .... long weekend maybe.. i'm chill. irene, you rock, you really do!
  5:09pm
Gilhooly:

I heard he doesn't recycle.
  5:10pm
ta da:

unfortunately or fortunately these songs remind me of my grade school which was run by a bunch of 60s hippy/political activists types - and most of um played guitar
  5:11pm
north guinea hills:

"willow's theme" was on the original wickerman soundtrack (different version), right?
  5:15pm
Virgil:

Also, he's notorious for pickin' off squirrels with his BB gun.
  5:15pm
annie:

cecile, i wouldn't trade those days for anything. i wish i had been around even earlier. i would have been one of them protesting the war to end all wars!..
  5:15pm
Kirsten:

LOVE this Bee Gees song Irene. Hello from Clay's wife!
  5:16pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

This Bee Gees track is perfect for today's weather, at least that of Jersey City.
  5:17pm
Carmichael:

Wow, Something from Odessa can be played in just about any genre, eh? What a killer collection.
  5:20pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

Carmichael, I agree. Odessa is great. Have you seen the reissue? It's covered with blood red velvet, just like the original issue LP. You can fondle the cover while you listen!
  5:21pm
Bunster:

Mad coke fiend, too.
  5:28pm
Irene:

Kirsten, Melody Fair is one of my favorite tunes from my early days of radio listening. Love those harmonies!!
  5:31pm
ta da:

nothing better than a sexy chello player
  5:33pm
annie:

irene are you familiar with kristen miller, a cellist from vermont, she plays jazz improv cello...you can find her on cellobrew and also cd baby
  5:38pm
Irene:

No, I'm not familiar with her. I'll have to give a listen.
  5:41pm
annie:

great song.. yeah check her out, i guess she just never made it big, but i love jazz cello
  5:51pm
Cecile:

BATS
  5:57pm
erin:

love the bats song- rad stuff
  5:59pm
Parq:

Mmm, drums and electric guitars. I hope I'm to be excused for saying, now this is my kinda sound.
  6:01pm
Parq:

Gotta get me some of that Jon. Kane. Everything I've heard of him (all on FMU, I might add) has been just hypnotic.
