This Black Pus is making my job so much better, as if editing this HTML were a mission to save everyone on earth from being sawed in pieces by wild, eyeless half-mechanized creatures.
12:11pm
Baff's Boss:
It *is* a mission. To save yourself from being sawed in pieces by wild, eyeless half-mechanized creatures like me.
12:14pm
Cecile:
This reminds me of Yeti What Are You by Snakefinger

good to hear ya, Woody.
12:31pm
Ike:
I agree with NGH.
I'm belaboring the point at work today. How about all of you?
12:31pm
Carmichael:
I loved seeing Edith on the Sammy Maudlin show.
12:34pm
dc pat:
wait, did somebody just mention Edith Prickley? ("PFFF-HA!")
12:37pm
Cecile:
That Bats set I have to dl. That was excellent
12:37pm
Carmichael:
Pat, are you interested in my prediction for US - Spain? Since I was so close with my last prognostication (Endorra) ....
12:41pm
Cecile:
Andorra. Endora was Samantha's mom on Bewitched. :D
12:45pm
Carmichael:
Thanks. And you're not even Ike ....
What was Paul Lynde's character named?
12:46pm
webitched:
Naww, Endora is an off-road motorcycle race.
(Uncle Arthur)
12:47pm

Uncle Arthur!
12:47pm

I found Arthur intriguing. Unlike my Abner ...

12:57pm

Oh cmon, this is Stevie Winwood.
12:58pm

12:58pm
Cecile:
Carm, get out of my head
12:59pm
Carmichael:
Are you thinking about tacos now, too?
1:00pm
Cecile:
I was thinking about Vietnamese spring rolls.
Oh well, one for two
1:00pm
Woody:
Funny.... I'm always thinking of tacos. Unfortunate being in NYC land of everything but good tacos.
1:01pm
Cecile:
Ike posted a taco truck that looked good. Sets up by the Red Hook Brewery in Brooklyn
1:02pm
Cecile:
THIS IS THE BEST FUSION OF WHATEVER I HAVE HEARD IN UH, A WHILE
1:06pm
dc pat:
woops, sorry Carm, I went away--lay your prediction on me.
1:07pm
Woody:
Yep, Red Hook tacos are promising...
1:07pm
Cecile:
okay, can you play some Gap band. I am serious. Burn Rubber?
1:10pm
Ike:
Those amazing Red Hook trucks are a few blocks from the brewery. Only weekends and holidays at Bay & Clinton Sts., roughly May-Oct. Their huaraches and sopes are even better than their tacos.
But yes, most Mex. food in NYC is disappointing. Chowhounds hyped one place on 10th Ave., but my reaction was zzzzzzzzzzz, bland.
1:12pm
Cecile:
That is surprising to me.
Minneapolis has turned into a pretty decent hotbed. Not like Texas or CA, but you can get some good food.
1:14pm
Cecile:
I have had no experience eating mexican food in TX or CA, but my friends who have pronounce it halfway decent.
1:18pm
dc pat:
I've eaten in CA, NM, and TX and it blows any east cost stuff away. DC Mex food is forgettable too.
1:20pm
Cecile:
I mean they say some of the new MN places are ok.
That does suprise me about East Coast mex food being not so hot.
1:20pm
Ike:
Many East Coast Mex. immigrants are from a different region than southern/western immigrants, I think. Maybe their regional cuisine is just not as tasty...? Who knows?
It's not all bad on the East Coast... I've had really good Mex. in Delaware. I mean, boring flat-ass Delaware, beating anything in Manhattan! Sheesh.
1:20pm
Disastrogirl:
There's a Freakshow, baby baby, in my cubicle.
There's a Freakshow.
1:22pm
gumby:
I had pretty good Mexica fare in Hawaii, but then again when you're in Hawaii, food is an afterthought
1:22pm
Cecile:
that could be, Ike.
I like Southern Italian food, and the part of Michigan I come from has a lot of Northern Italian immigrants. So not so much of the tomato I love.
But my mom comes from Pittsburgh, so I grew up on red sauce.
1:24pm
Carmichael:
Needless to say, there is a TON of mexican food out here, very cheap and mostly pretty good. It's all northern Mex cuisine: tacos, burritos, chimichangas, enchiladas, etc ...
Now over in Texas, they have that border stuff I've never heard of.
1:24pm
Woody:
cannibals, cannibals, cannibals
1:24pm
Cecile:
Is this from the Units from the Pacific NW?
1:24pm
Dr. Atkins:
It's hard to have Mexican food without overcarbing, but foodies don't give a rat's ass about their pancreas, only about their tastebuds and their aesthetic sensibilities...
1:25pm
Cecile:
that's my husband's favorite. Loves good Tex-Mex
1:26pm
Carmichael:
Sacramento was a relocation center for Vietnamese after the war, so we also have a huge SE Asian population. I am a new convert to Thai and Viet food. Healthy, inexpensive and incredibly tasty.
1:27pm
Carmichael:
We have an extremely small cannibal population.
1:28pm
Cecile:
Minnesota was as well. Vietnamese food here is excellent. Thai food is getting better. And we have one Cambodian restaurant that is supposed to be great, but I haven't been to yet.
1:28pm
Marshall Stacks:
Once upon a time I stayed in a hotel in northern Finland where the restaurant served Mexican - or was it "Mexican"? - food.
I stuck to the local stuff: crusty bread, herring and pickles. And, in Helsinki, reindeer carpaccio.
1:31pm
Carmichael:
Marshall, the worst pizza I ever had was in Scotland. It was billed as "ham and pineapple". I was stunned at how far away they were from the actual thing.
1:33pm
Cecile:
I had salsa and chips in Montreal. The chips were excellent, but the salsa wasn't quite right. I think they put tarrgon and basil in it. :(
1:34pm
dc pat:
Carm, I've heard that about UK pizza.
I'll say this, it's hard to get a good salsa--it's usually over done. If you can't get it right, just chop up tomatoes, onions, and chiles and you're done.
1:35pm
Carmichael:
Oh Pat, BTW I say 2-1 US.
1:35pm
Lizardner Dave:
I went to a place that called itself "The American Bar" in Zurich. I ordered buffalo wings and they served them with all the "traditional accompaniments": bleu cheese, ranch dressing, thousand island dressing and salsa. Hmmm....
1:36pm
Woody:
Cecile, just noticed your question within all the taco talk (I haven't hadlunch!).... that was the Units from San Francisco, early 80s.
1:39pm
Cecile:
I remember reading about them in Trouser Press!
1:39pm
Carmichael:
Me neither. Now I'm torn. Maybe I'll do a complete 180 and try an Indian food place.
1:39pm
risky!:
hey woody, thanks for that black pus!
go woody go!
1:43pm

that's a bold prediction there, Carm. It'd be nice if Spain choked and the US played at their level..

stingy d:
woody! hey man... ah man... i missed a great first set. i twitterd you guys, did i win those daggone tickets?
1:54pm
Woody:
Hi Stingy-
Didn't even see the Tweet feed (not a twitterer)... I'm guessing no if you haven't heard back.
1:56pm
Ike:
To go back to NYC being "land of everything but good tacos"... unfortunately NYC also lacks some other cuisines, like Laotian, or (good) Burmese. And NYC's Vietnamese food is not as good as in other cities. Actually, Montclair NJ has better Viet than Manhattan.
Twitter is dumb.
1:58pm
Woody:
Ike, but there is always the Bahn Mi!
2:00pm
Twitter:
tweety poo, twits -- i sucked you in, and in five years i'll be just as much of a trivial pursuit question as friendster and altavista are now
2:03pm
stingy d:
i think the tacos at la superior are good. all the hating of twitter is senseless man. it's like saying a current band is no good. it's not no good, it's just that it's very ahead of the curve. technology will advance and eclipse it sure. but get over it. buckethead
2:03pm

2:09pm

the best part about you twitigation may be the fact that it was under 140 characters.
2:10pm
Carmichael:
Well I never been to Burma,
But I kinda like the music.
2:11pm
Twitter:
yes, since almost no one ever has anything worthwhile to say, i turn out to be a benevolent dictator of concision. still wastage, but less of it {bows for applause}
2:13pm
Ike:
Village Mingala was awful the last time I tried it. That stuff barely even counts as Chinese food, much less Burmese.
Woody, that's true, some bahn mi is great here! I hope the place at 369 Broome St. is still good. I think somebody said it went downhill. Haven't been over there to check. Vietnamese people sure do know how to make a great cheap sub sandwich.
2:13pm
Twitter:
ok, still a bigass shitload of wastage, but in smaller, bitesize turds :-) ( <--- under 140)
2:13pm
eb:
yeah twitter's a bit lame-- I can't believe all the hype, I guess people, including major news organizations, need something to talk about---

I can get the best banh mi right near my house for less than $4 a sandwich.
I was in a Burmese restaurant here and they were playing native classical/ritual music, which is really atonal. We would think of it as avant garde, but it's probably centuries old. S.E. Asian music is as good as their food, I've been wanting to learn more about it.
2:16pm

the simple fact that people are so quick to despise twitter is part of what makes it effective.

2:17pm

Burmese food is like monkey food ...
2:18pm

Baoguette's Bahn mi game is ridic.
2:21pm
doug from dc:
Burmeses: Mohingar, a fish 'n noodle soup. Salads that are really room-temperature stir fry. Yellow tofu made from chickpeas. Curried pork with mangos. It's closer to indian cuisine than thai food is.
2:22pm
Liz B.:
Woody, you are killin' it today! Loving every minute!
2:22pm
Marshall Stacks:
I'm into Burmese food in a big way, but it's hard to describe. It doesn't really have too much in common with the neighboring cuisines. Which doesn't tell you much, I'm afraid. Doug from dc summed it up pretty well.
Bahn mi is easier. Wikipedia (like Twitter but more verbose) says it well: "Bánh mì or bánh mỳ (English pronunciation: /ˈbʌnmiː/, Vietnamese: [ɓǎːɲ mî]) is a Vietnamese baguette made with wheat and rice flour, as well as a type of sandwich traditionally made with this type of baguette."
2:24pm
Marshall Stacks:
I'd request an Uncle Woody Sullender track, but I bet this DJ won't play it.
2:24pm
doug from dc:
The strange revelation of banh mi is that the vietnamese are really into baloney. I've actually had some really gourmet viet omelette dish with "steamed pork" which was, for all intents and purposes, baloney.
2:25pm

2:28pm
Woody:
Thanks Liz!
2:29pm
Woody:
Angst! Angst!
2:32pm
Ike:
Stingy, what's the connotation of "ridic" in English pls.? Does that mean you like Baoguette? I went to the one on Lex (Curry Hill) once and they were out of baguettes, so I couldn't try it.
2:34pm

2:42pm
Brendan:
Mandalay (Burmese Restaurant) - Silver Spring MD - amazing! The Mandalay in the East Village can be hit or miss.
Surprisingly, most food that I had while in Burma was pretty gnarly, but with the situation there....what can you say. Tea Leaf salad and pork with chili and mango!!!!!!! And Pat-waing music!!! YES!!!
2:43pm
Woody:
I am not said guy. I wonder if saying "I am Woody" could get me a discount though?
2:45pm

probably not. give it a go at other music.

oh, i finded out that the tickets is goners.
2:46pm

In Thailand near the Burmese border, I had GREAT laphet thoke. Brendan, I've been to Mandalay in MD too. Yum. Myanmar Rest. in Falls Church VA was even better last time I was there.
Oh no Marshall, that sucks. So there's some aspect of the Myanmar govt. that *works*?!? Really? Or did the laphet makers just piss off the military junta somehow?
Great show!
2:47pm

2:53pm

Stingy, you punk, go brine yourself in a pickle bucket, you language-mangling smeghead! (Mmm, pickles.)
2:57pm

There's this Thai place in town that makes a curry with beef, thin crispy noodles and pickled mustard greens.
2:58pm

GOOOOOOAAALLLL 1 - 0 USA!!
2:58pm

Brendan, I haven't seen or heard of Burma VJ. Got a pointer?
My 7-yr-old and I spent part of a day trying to find some laphet thoke in the Burmese neighborhoods of Chiang Mai. Ultimately thirst and hunger got the better of us and we gave up.
Upon our return I found a US laphet connection.
And now I need to find a chemist to test my supply. :-(
