Favoriting September 1, 2009: OUTRAGEOUS CHERRY live set! plus: efd meets his Waterloo
Detroit's Outrageous Cherry returns to WFMU for a killer live set that you won't want to miss! Singer, songwriter and producer extraordinaire Matthew Smith and guitarist Larry Ray continue to form the core of the band, and they're currently aided and abetted by past members of the Cyril Lords and Little Claw. Their sound is a delicious layer cake of Motown backbeats with power-pop harmonies, covered with a tasty layer of psych. Their ninth(!) full-length release, Universal Malcontents, is out now on the Alive label, and they start a west coast tour on Sept 4 at the Hemlock in San Francisco. Check their MySpace page for the complete list of dates!

Listener comments!

  11:06pm
anemone:

EFD always does it right!
  11:07pm
Jessica:

Hey! How's a girl supposed to be morose to this?
  11:08pm
randy in NC:

I saw Golden Earing in either '73 or '74 as the opener for King Crimson in Central Park. They got booed off the stage, with people throwing tomatoes at them. I still wonder who would bring tomatoes to a concert? Crowds are tough in NY I guess...
  11:09pm
efd:

The Evan "Funk" Davies show is a morosity-free zone, Jessica!

Thanks Anemone, and hi Randy! Funny story.
  11:11pm
anemone:

EFD! You gots to open your show with a Pink Fairies tune one of these days.
  11:13pm
john:

Hey Evan! Holsapple and Stamey did a really nice version of this when we saw them in LA last month.
  11:15pm
efd:

hi John! very cool. Anemone, I'll put them on my list!
  11:16pm
Matt:

The only thing this show's missing...a little "Gold Dust Woman".

How 'bout it, Evan?
  11:16pm
Sybil:

Good evening all!

Oh, am I happy to be here.
  11:17pm
Sybil:

In other words, what Jessica said.
  11:18pm
Sybil:

The Spoiler?! I thought I was the only one who knew about this one.

Unbelievable.
  11:20pm
anemone:

Therese played some Fleetwood Mac in her show earlier. That being said, I'm all for more FM!
  11:20pm
efd:

hi Sybil! I just found out about "The Spoiler" on Sunday - amazing song!
Matt, coincidentally I do have something Fleetwood Mac-related for later in the show, but not "Gold Dust Woman."
  11:21pm
john:

I'd vote for Tusk, personally. And Sybil, those Memphis 60 and 70 comps are awesome!
  11:21pm
Laurie:

My cat was pawing at my door. I actually thought it was percussion on this wonderful Dukes of Stratosphear song.

SLOAN. Yes, I love Sloan.
  11:22pm
Sybil:

OMG, does this show rock or what?

And we're just getting started.
  11:22pm
minnie the moocha:

nice tunez this eve
  11:24pm
Matt:

What did the critics say the best album of 1997 was? Because ONE CHORD TO ANOTHER is better.
  11:25pm
Laurie:

Hey Evan, have you seen the video for Jay-Z's D.O.A. (Death of Autotune)? I think Harvey Keitel is in it.
  11:25pm
dave:

it's time for funk!

edutainment!
  11:25pm
Sybil:

Frak the critics.
  11:26pm
Matt:

Laurie - what?! Between that and INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS, this is the Summer of Keitel!
  11:26pm
Big Plastic Head:

Great set, Evan.
  11:27pm
Sybil:

If this show gets better, I may well enter an altered state.
  11:27pm
Matt:

I got quoted! Thanks Evan!
  11:29pm
Sybil:

Ooh, Matt, I'm jealous! Not that you don't deserve it!
  11:31pm
sabrina lane:

heeey evan--awsome show so far,btw evan are'nt you glad tat summers over? i sure am,,
  11:35pm
Sybil:

efd, I wander far...
  11:36pm
dave:

i've been waiting a lifetime for somebody to out-mighty-lemon-drops the mighty lemon drops and it pretty much sounds like outrageous cherry have pulled it off.

i can die happy.
  11:36pm
sabrina lane:

also efd i gave you a shout out during monica's show the other nite,,,didnt' you see it??
  11:39pm
efd:

Laurie, haven't seen that video yet - I'll have to check it out.

Dave, glad you appreciate both the MLD quality of Outrageous Cherry *and* the genius of DJ Funktual.
BPH, good to see you here!
Sabrina, yes, I saw - glad to see there are other castles you haunt besides mine. :)
  11:39pm
Sybil:

I hope y'al recommend stuff.
  11:40pm
efd:

behind-the-scenes note: Sam, the drummer, uses just a floor tom and snare!
  11:43pm
sabrina lane:

evan--just to let you know you & monica are my ultimate favorite fmu dee jays,,,it's a fact!!!
  11:43pm
dave:

sam's vinny denunzio with a gear fetish!
  11:47pm
newsjoe:

New to these guys (Outrageous Cherry) and I love it already :).
  11:48pm
efd:

i guess i ought to be figuring out the Midnight Ticket Oasis instead of sitting here in a trance
  11:50pm
efd:

actually i'm going back into the trance for "unless" - this is an amazing version
  11:50pm
sabrina lane:

a little known fact; even though i'm 28 i'm a disco diva baby boommer,,,=)
  11:51pm
dave:

man oh man do i love 'unless'.

what a perfect song.
  11:54pm
efd:

dave, i think now you're going to love it even more.

here's a fun game you all can play: guess which songs in this set caused me to jot down songs that i played in tonight's opening set.
(note: not every song in the opening set was jotted down during the session)
  11:55pm
dave:

holy crap.
  11:57pm
sabrina lane:

evan,,this is a great set,,but this is my last post i wish i could post all nite, but maybe next week,,,g'nite yall
  11:59pm

  12:05am
BPH:

  12:06am
efd:

BPH, i did! thank you for noticing. :)
  12:06am
stingy d:

nah he sounds like he just woke up
  12:07am
stingy d:

wait he said dennis coffey!? wild!
  12:07am
dave:

i'm not sure how to reconcile the fact that "toni daytona" is not an anagram for "cthulu" with the fact that we live in an apparently ordered universe.
  12:07am
BPH:

But you still brought it like the pro that you are. Great stuff.
  12:11am
footnote:

the same person who posts as sabrina lane also posts as toni daytona and under other names. but it's not comedy if footnotes are required :-P
  12:13am
Danne D:

Fabulous show so far Evan. Btw, the Dukes of Stratosphear song had me getting a bit nostalgic as with the fall air it brought me back to my college days if for but a little while.

LOL at Evan losing it :D
  12:13am
stingy d:

did someone say something about dinosaur L? or am i losing it?
  12:13am
?:

  12:13am
dave:

jacques détergént KILLED EFD!
  12:13am
BPH:

Hahahahahah!!! You got the giggles!
  12:14am
Danne D:

On an unrelated note - I really hate Cole Hamels :(
  12:15am
Joe Camel:

Take your camels to bed

wink wink

I am one sexy camel!
  12:15am
stingy détergént:

bonjour what is your oui oui!?
  12:16am
Danne D:

Midnight Giggle Oasis
  12:18am
24:

here i am being used as a giggle fit coverup. how are the mighty fallen!
  12:18am
stingy d:

is cole hamels that chlid actor?
  12:22am
Danne D:

no he's the phillies pitcher who is so inconsistent I benched him :( and of course he pitched a shut out :( I just wanna lead the Evan Funk A Happy How Do You To You Fantasy Baseball League for one day. And it's doomed to never happen :kicksrock:
  12:23am
dave:

jacques détergént's (i'm using the accents even if they won't, gawddamnit) myspace page does not disappoint: it features the beguiling and creatively-spelled "waldorf histeria".
  12:23am
Danne D:

I'll never catch that pesky Ubergoober *pouts*
  12:24am
24-carat black:

i begin to giggle. tears runnin down my eyes!
  12:24am
lupica:

Let the Sloan renaissance of 09 begin!
  12:24am
stingy d:

those drums are the cream in my pants.
  12:24am
efd:

i have met my Waterloo, and it is Jacques Detergent
  12:26am
Danne D:

i begin to wiggle as I am having weepy giggles
  12:27am
G:

there, there. we all have our breaking points...

at least he wasn't Tide De Tergent...
  12:30am
Joe:

listening to you try not to crack up made me crack up and almost drive my car into a tree.

And I didn't even GET THE JOKE
  12:31am
footnote:

the performer's name was french but sounded like a humble household product.
  12:32am
how's this?:

JOCK DETERGENT.
  12:34am
Joe:

But that's only funny if you say it in a french accent.

Okay maybe I do get the joke.

PS - if I were king, it'd be totally okay to crack up on the radio
  12:36am
Jock Detergent:

Disclaimer: Jock Strap not included.
  12:36am
dave:

i wonder how you get to be one of the arrrghs. do you know wau personally and just get an automatic in, or are there audditions? did wau put an ad in the paper seeking arrrghs?
  12:37am
dave:

oh, and ABOUT FREAKING TIME FOR SOME NEW DC SNIPERS.
  12:38am
Wau y los Arrrghs:

Auditions? We don't need no stinkin' audtions!
  12:45am
efd:

Lupica - and not a moment to soon!
Joe, I don't really think there's a joke to get. Glad you're OK.
  12:46am
Joe:

I am loving synth sting in this song. If I had won that powerball jackpot, I'd pay somebody to follow me around with a MicroKorg and play that sound every time I did the finger-gun point at something.
  12:54am
Danne D:

I gotta turn in - i'm just exhausted. Thanks for another great show Evan! I look forward to catching up with the rest on the archives.

Night everyone :)
  12:54am
efd:

goodnight Danne, thanks for stopping by! Good luck with the first place pursuit!
  12:56am
Michael from the Left Coast:

Damn, can't believe I missed Bob Welch!
  12:57am
Paolo:

Bob Welch was rather satisfying
  12:58am
Michael from the Left Coast:

don't forget Mystery Train!
Carter rules!
  1:04am
efd:

Michael, duly noted!
  1:04am
Brian:

Thanks for playing the new Pollard. I think Elephant Jokes is the best album he's released in weeks...
  1:05am
coalhard from the west virginia future coast:

don't forget the peace train--cat stevens--aka yousef
  1:06am
efd:

Brian with the zing of the week!
  1:10am
Joe:

a question of etiquette:

Is wearing one of your WFMU t-shirts to a WFMU event (or volunteering) analagous to wearing a band t-shirt to see said band?
  1:11am
efd:

ha! personally, I say no - but curious what others have to say.
  1:12am
Michael from the Left Coast:

EFD--Is this a different mix?
  1:13am
randy in NC:

Sounds different to me too...
  1:13am
efd:

it's from the private stock LP - maybe the one on the Chrysalis reissue was remixed...?
  1:16am
randy in NC:

Maybe it's the less than ideal computer speakers I'm currently using...
  1:18am
Michael from the Left Coast:

Man Overboard was definitely a different mix, possibly a completely different take on the Chrysalis album.
  1:19am
stingy d:

joe - i'd say that that's a yes. HOWEVER! the general attitude of wfmu from the inside and the outside is that it's one big we're-nerds party. so it really comes down to: do you want to be nerds with the girl and the guy who are also wearing wfmu shirts or not?
  1:20am
slugluv1313:

YESi noticed that about the BLONDIE tune too! totally different from the version on the LP i have . . . and omg THE TUBES!!!!!!!
  1:22am
stingy d:

i don't make no fashion faux pas'
  1:22am
randy in NC:

Tubes played here earlier this summer, they were actually still fun I thought.
  1:24am
Michael from the Left Coast:

doesn't disclosure require that Confidential is Michael Shelley's label?
I'm late to the party because I played music tonight with the guy who wrote the Greasy Kids Stuff theme
  1:31am
efd:

it's not a disclosure issue, it's a self-promotion issue - so, for example, he can't play it on his show but other DJs don't have to say it's his label (nor are they prevented from mentioning it)
  1:33am
efd:

actually more conflict of interest than self-promotion
  1:36am
Joe:

Everyone knows those rules are the only thing keeping Evan from absorbing WFMU into his sprawling media empire.
  1:38am
Paolo:

Good night all, I have class at 8:30 tomorrow morning, unfortunately :(
  1:39am
efd:

goodnight Paolo, thanks for listening & commenting!
  1:39am
Joe:

"____'s sprawling media empire" is a pretty good name for a radio show, actually.

Hmm
  1:40am
Rupert Murdoch:

Yep, Evan's breathing down my neck..
  1:41am
efd:

don't sleep too soundly tonight, Rupe.
  1:43am
Rupe:

Yep, I need some of those Michael Jackson-strength anesthetics for this. Got my concierge MD on speed dial.
  1:44am
Laurie:

Wow, the bass in that song made my room vibrate. Literally. And the volume isn't that loud, but I do have a pretty awesome speaker set up.
  1:44am
stingy d:

rupe scoops and flim flams!
  1:49am
randy in NC:

9!
  1:50am
Michael from the Left Coast:

The great Dennis Diken and the great Ed Stasium, rocking it together!
  1:51am
efd:

they're going to be on the Muscular Dystrophy telethon this weekend! (well, the band - not sure about Ed Stasium)
  1:53am
stingy d:

i'm dLunk
  1:53am
Michael from the Left Coast:

Ed won't be there and for the first time in many years I won't be seeing much of the telethon this year (I"m playing a gig that day)
