A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

"If you've got Trouble" - the Beatles
  9:23am
dale:

i have some old rotten mulch hay for my raspberry plants and a wheelbarrow, but i suppose that isn't the same illusion. i see from the black hole trailer on youtube that it starred a robert forster. which makes me want to put in a request for another robert forster or grant mclennan or the go betweens (some day at your whim).

You could play any song by the great Xtian doom band Trouble.
  9:44am
Cecile:

trish, trouble is teh awesome.
Got my copy for 25 cents at the Goodwill!
  9:46am

aaaah, v k, dj ice pack is back at school after a terrifically entertaining summer. he read lots of tin tin, ate lots of fresh corn and expanded his record collection at every yard sale we stopped at...
  9:46am
Pieter:

Hello Trouble, hello all!
  9:48am
Cecile:

*suddenly jetted back to senior year when the NEW ELO record was out*
  9:48am

  9:49am
trish:

I don'know about awesome. Nothing like the ad, though wrapped up better than than laemo sameo "Sorrr-rryy".
  9:53am
Cecile:

I do love Sorry. And Parcheesi. Any sliding game that bumps you back to start.

I'm kind of a she-bastard that way. A bastard girl if you will...
  9:58am
trish:

vive le différence!
  10:00am
Cecile:

Trouble, could you squeeze some Lou Rawls in there if you have the inclination and opportunity?
  10:01am
trapper:

  10:02am
Cecile:

  10:19am
Parq:

Commute's finally over; went out the door in the middle of "This Is So Great", which certainly is. (And for those who don't know, it's available for download on BoB).

The "class picture" photo on today's home page is perfect. That is, of course, exactly what most FMU listeners feel like when out in the rest of the world.
  10:20am
krebstar:

24 carat black -- yowsa!
  10:22am
dc pat:

oh nice, simaryp! thanks.
  10:28am
Parq:

You don't need the album title to know that Shapiro track is British. In spite of her best efforts to sound like she's from Detroit, the use of the phrase "right out" in the chorus gives it dead away.
  10:30am
trapper:

i can't believe i missed HELEN SHAPIRO while out walking the dog!
  10:32am
ERIC:

Ah, almost makes me want to watch the complete Beethoven films.
  10:35am
dc pat:

I always like how Willie Dixon slaps his bass one last time at the end of CB songs
  10:36am
Cecile:

Yes, trouble. That's the constellation of the Swan.
  10:38am
Kieran:

Who's the wildlife loving Frenchie?
  10:39am

I've seen "35 Rhums," it's Denis' best in a while.
  10:49am

hey bill w! i guess you won't be my film date next week then...
  10:49am
dc pat:

jeezus! Yer hitting it today, trouble. Johnny! OOOWWWW!!!
  10:50am
Joe:

You sure are, Trouble. Hittin' on all six!
  10:54am
dc pat:

ok, what's going on? You've played about 6 of my all time fav tunes...Dawn Penn! Is this a recent remix?
  11:00am
Carmichael:

Good morning, Trouble. What a knockout slew of music I missed!

Cecile, when I was a senior the "new" ELO album was New World Record, and it was awesome.

Dum Dum and Ken, the Kinks are the *greatest rock band in the world*, not those pansies who stole that title. Soap Opera was a work of art.

Trapper, I have a whole friggin' iPod full of Helen Shapiro. The Picadilly Story is a great collection of her and others' work of that period.

Oh, feckin' Chroist! The Montclairs! I can't type fast enough.

You're in a zone, Trouble. Channel it .....
  11:03am
jamesie:

good god!
  11:06am
Parq:

I want to go to another place and time too. I want to go back to last Tuesday so I can get out to the corner in time to get my bus and not be late for work.
  11:06am
krebstar:

German accented villains -- any language that give such hard emphasis at the beginning of every single damn word deserves a long thin mustache, a tall black hat and a cape. Just sayin. (English speaker whose learned the German).
  11:07am
Carmichael:

Does Eskew Reeder = Esquirita?
  11:07am
still b/p:

still b/p: Anybody hear the goldurned Mongolian hip hop story on NPR this morning with ALMOST NO MUSIC in it that wasn't just dropped under the voice-over or else lasted no more than a few seconds? Oy, sheesh, doh, damn! I know -- limits, but lemme hear just a little something of what you're goin' on about, for chrissakes! Bah! -- failure to steppe up.
  11:08am
Ψ-Ns:

My wife uses "The Black Hole" to teach critical thinking in her science classes. Probably the only way you could get a kid today to watch it all the way through. Of course bad Sci-fi (like chemistry safety videos) are one of my vices.
  11:08am
Parq:

Still, NPR listeners don't want to hear the music, they just want to know about it so they can drop it as a conversational nugget at dinner parties. ("I heard on NPR about this new kind of rap music that's from . . . ")
  11:09am
dc pat:

let me tell you something. I was a mod as a teenager but I was WRONG WRONG!! Rockers are WAY cooler in every way. shit and while typing this the Small Faces is making me second guess my last sentence...
  11:11am
james:

trouble, do you ride a vespa or lammy?
  11:12am
v k:

mod? what is a mod?
  11:13am
dc pat:

mods like to dress up like 60's vacuum cleaner salesmen
  11:13am
Carmichael:

Pat, Small Faces were probably mod rockers. They could really crank up the guitars, but sadly the video to Itchy Koo Park kind of negates that thought ....
  11:14am
trouble:

james, i secretly covet a ducatti, with a sidecar for dj icepack!
  11:14am
Cecile:

they were the kids in early 60s British youth culture who were into the Who, Small Faces, amd soul music. very sharp dresses - long hair, no ducktails or leather like the Rockers who liked rockabilly and jump blues.
  11:15am
dc pat:

I always considered the Beatles mod-rockers

I secretly covet a Cervelo with Campy Super Record components...what does that make me?
  11:16am
Carmichael:

Picture the Specials singing "Rudy (A Message To You)".
  11:17am
dc pat:

one thing that turned me rocker is going to see live rockabilly--you go see almost any rockabilly band and they'll blow your sox off. Mod bands, on the other hand, almost consistently blow.
  11:17am
Cecile:

this is just a gloss.
And if you look at the early Cavern Club pix, they look like Rockerse. they had to go to Germany and their friend Astrid to get their haircuts and suits.
  11:17am
doug in DC:

An interviewer onces asked the Beatles whether they were mods or rockers. The reply was "we're mockers," but I can't remember which Beatle said this. And I'd like to hear some Mongolian hip-hop. Maybe later anyway...
  11:18am
Cecile:

I consider the Dirtbombs a mod band in a way, and they're pretty damn great
(I even think I saw Mick in his mod gear in Detroit way back when now that Ithink about it.)
  11:18am
dc pat:

Ringo, Hard Days Night
  11:19am
dc pat:

Mick was in the Gories who were definitely NOT mod even though they looked it.
  11:20am
doug in DC:

Yup, Pat, it was Ringo. Pardon my typo.
  11:20am
Chris:

Fantastic Specials mashup.
  11:23am
Cecile:

Yes, but I remember running around all 6'+ of him running around Detroit in his bull's eye parka. he even talks about starting out as a mod.

Butl, yeah, the Gories were as rocker as a band as you're going to get. Maybe he's a mocker, too. :D
  11:23am
Parq:

I would also add that the interview was not a real one, but was a scene in "A Hard Day's Night". Trouble, nice touch following Carm's reference to the Specials with that Gangster mashup.
  11:23am
dc pat:

DAMMIT TROUBLE!! I have to pee but can't leave the music!!!
  11:24am
dc pat:

yeah, I guess mocker is the way to go. All agreed, say PISS OFF!
  11:26am
russell:

i'm still in love with wfmu! thank you!
  11:27am
james:

i ride a vespa but secretly covet enfields and indians.
  11:27am
Kevin in BayRidge:

dc pat, If this wasn't FMU I'd say that was a lead-in to a Flo-Max commercial.
  11:30am
jamesie:

I ride a 750 1971 Commando but I still love scooters
  11:31am
north guinea hills:

deep, this marcia aitken mix.
  11:31am
dc mocker:

this is just beautiful...
  11:33am
dale:

love that colin's voice
  11:35am
john:

The Zombies in their early-Spinal-Tap-pian best
  11:39am
Carmichael:

Good ol' Zombies. Their box set is worth it's weight in gold.
  11:48am
annie:

trouble. it's been a great show today!!
  11:50am
ERIC:

a whole show of Zombies and Small Faces would be great. Or how bout the small faced zombies, a group from Detroit perhaps.
  11:51am
jk:

Nice Bappi Lahiri cover.
really enjoying the show today. thanks
  11:54am
trouble:

thanks for all of your good vibes today, peeps...i have been busy with the short songs, so not much chance to talk back, but I enjoyed having you here! cheers.
  11:56am
Carmichael:

You outdid yourself today, Trouble. See you next week!
  11:59am
Parq:

A Brazilian thanks for the great sounds, Miss T.
  1:32pm
Erik:

Great show, Trouble, the perfect soundtrack for our late Saturday afternoon game of Twister. (Archives rule!)
