A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

morning trouble!
  9:08am
trouble:

good morning annie!
  9:08am
nasok:

jay reatard RIP.... i hate to be a requestor but can we hear some lost sounds?
  9:09am
Chris:

Hey Trouble. After last weeks show I finally rented the first season of Mad Men. Although, I am still bothered by its lack of space ships, I am now a fan. Loved the plastic bag over the kid scene, among so many other great scenes and themes.
  9:09am
texas scott:

RIP Teddy Pendergrass.
  9:12am
naosk:

what?!?!?! tp? noooooo
  9:13am
Mark Williams:

a much lesser-known RIP, but Yabby U (mid-'70s Jamaican roots/dub heavyweight) also passed away on Tues. His "Prophecy of Dub" record w/King Tubby is as good as it gets...
  9:16am
Bad Ronald:

Don't forget Bingo Gazingo... RIP.
  9:16am
trouble:

wt...?! i can't take all the death....grim, very grim
  9:17am
BSI:

Mark W: CRAP! That record was my gateway drug into dub in the first place.... Conquering Lion was the track that did it....
  9:19am
texas scott:

rejoice,trouble.
they are all in heaven now.
making music with the angels.
  9:21am
Mark Williams:

Conquering Lion does it for most. Well, he had a good knock, as the English say, what with his illnesses/disabilities. As for Jay Reatard, that's tragic.
  9:24am
The Gods:

I have a feeling that this coming decade will be chuck-full of lost music souls - prepare yourselves and go slow.
  9:29am
BSI:

i've since heard the vocal version of Conquering Lion but dig the instrumental/minimal mix on Prophesy much better. Still, it's all good. Better 'n good.
  9:30am
BSI:

Trouble has banished death!
Thank you thank you!
  9:31am
dale:

morning trouble. i mistakenly bought that t-rex dvd. a bit of decent performance footage, but i'd trade it for a hamburger today.
  9:33am
Vito S. Brevis:

Stars are shining in the sky, or are they in my mind's eye? Canta, no llores!
  9:38am
Chris:

Bolan was a complete ham who made some great songs but he put out mucho crap as well.
  9:43am
seang:

a bit of a Debussy mood in the air
  9:46am
Cecile:

NO, JAY REATARD?!?!?!?!

Also, Teddy Pendergrass...
  9:48am
Glenn L:

and Yabby U, Cecile.
  9:48am
Cecile:

A goddam fucking shame, it is.
  9:49am
Brian:

Checking in from Madison.
  9:49am
Cecile:

Jeezue, I liked Yabby U a lot
  9:52am
Glenn L:

So sad. Just learned about Yabby from an earlier comment.
Wonder what happened? As well as J Reatard.
  9:53am
dc pat:

they still don't know what caused Jay's death. He had a LOT of enemies...
  9:55am
Cecile:

I think he was also quite generous with the substance abuse, from what I've heard. That could be true or false.

He could have had a pre-existing condition we don't know about, either.

All I remember is him taking the time to log in while I was on comments to give me his version of the story of his band quitting. Something I will always appreciate.
  9:58am
Chris:

Live fast, die young and leave a beautiful(?!?!) corpse
  9:59am
dc pat:

yeah, I remember when he did that. Funny. Probably will be the ol' "pre-existing condition" syndrome. Seems to knock off lots of rocknrollers..
  9:59am
hfox:

Thanks for the Kraftwerk!
  10:01am
Cecile:

the worst aphorism ever. Not ranting at you Chris. But I want everyone to get old, ugly and die at age 98, hale and strong, in their sleep...

dc pat, you can't play sports. So you stay in your room and make music. Then you go on tour...
  10:03am
BSI:

Hunter Thompson said 'tis better to be shot out of a cannon than squeezed out of a tube.... Not sure if that applies here, but it sounds awfully profound.
  10:07am
Cecile:

*pours rhubarb wine into the gutter for Jay*
  10:09am
Brian:

Ah, the birds!

  10:09am
XNet:

No Best Of 2009 list from you this year on the blog?
  10:10am
trs:

Cecile, I think "pre-existing condition" in matters of health tops that one by a long shot.
  10:10am
dc pat:

it's amazing what music you decide you "have time for" Apparently I didn't have time for Jay or Lhasa last year...IDIOT!
  10:11am
Chris:

I'm sure Jay R died abusing himself with substances - it's a fun thing to do, and I'm sure he knew the risks...but still surprising when it happens.
  10:14am
Cecile:

dcp, I know.
People are dropping like flies. I gotta catch as many shows as the budget and body will allow.
  10:26am
dc pat:

aaahhh, mint juleps....sounds good...
  10:30am
scott NY.:

MORE SUMMER SONGS PLEASE
I HAVE A SPRING SUMMER COLLECTION TO PREP
LOVE YOU TROUBLE YOUR SONGS PUT ME IN THE MOOD.
  10:31am
Brian:

Insect collection?
  10:33am
The Collector:

Not insects...
  10:37am
Carmichael:

Good morning all. I have my Harney's tea, someone brought in a ton of pastries to work, and Trouble's on the radio. Life is good ...
  10:38am
Cecile:

mmmmm harney's!
  10:40am
Billy Bikerider:

I ALWAYS enjoy riding around Jersey City!!!
  10:40am
Chris:

Lilly Allen does seem to like going topless.
Now I need to start my own collection.
  10:41am
Brian:

J'adore Camille.
  10:43am
Carmichael:

Mmmm, Cheese Danish ..... My impression of Cecile: "Nom nom nom ..."
  10:45am
Cecile:

LMAO.
I do like the food.
  10:46am
still b/p:

When Marsha said, "Gee gee goo wee," I said I'm all for that, and she was reinforcing an already very good show today -- another one.

Ton of pastries...I'm all for THAT! (Obama says "Yes, we cannoli!)
  10:48am
Cecile:

s b/p, I had a great cannoli in Chicago. Sooooo good. (It's so hard to find them in Minneapolis)
  10:48am
v k:

trouble - listening to your show with my mother (visiting from TX) and lil' 6 month old - 3 generations under ur trance - carry on butterfly
  10:48am
gladys:

i'm aaaaaaallwaaaayyyyyysss hungry!
  10:51am
Chris:

Where exactly did you get that great cannoli Cecile?
  10:53am
erella:

Good morning Trouble. I am always glad to listen to you in real time.
A delight.

Erella
  10:55am
Cecile:

At the Lovin' Oven in Libertyville. We were staying there with a friend's sister. Damn, it was good - with choco chips, half dipped in chocolate, a little cinnamon in the ricotta, and the best candied cherry on top.
  10:55am
erella:

yergh... until this version of Seasons in the Sun. Amazing that Terry Jacks did it.
I went to the funeral of a dear friend and they had an operatic version of this song(!)
  10:57am
Chris:

Do you know if there was there a change to the upcoming Frode Gjerstad show at Bossa? I'm getting two notices, with different dates and line-ups. Let me know if District of Noise is wrong and I'll fix it.
  10:57am
trouble:

good morning erella!
  10:58am
still b/p:

Next time in Boston I'll have to hit the North End for a mighty mighty cannoli. *eyes spin 360 degrees, endorphins stir*
  10:58am
doug from DC:

Chris, sorry that wasn't from you, it was to you. I'm a little discombobulated this a.m.
  10:59am
Cecile:

OH, Frode Gjerstad. He's pretty good. I saw him in, oh 2000? Who's playing with him?
  11:01am
listener mark:

Good Morning Trouble. Good Morning Every Body.
  11:02am
TC:

Chris,

Doug, you freaked me out there a bit.

I would go by Ed's latest e-mail blast this morning. Have not gotten the chance to look at/adjust the District of Noise calendar today but will investigate.

And Cecile, it's w/Paal Nillsen-Love, so you know it'll be great,
  11:02am
doug from DC:

Cecile - the fantastic drummer Pall Nillsen-Love and bassist Nick Stephens.
  11:02am
doug from DC:

Paal, not Pall
  11:03am
Brian:

Apalling, that.
  11:04am
Chris:

Doug FDC did you check - http://www.chicagoreader.com/chicago/Home
it's chicago's version of the voice and should have accurate info.
  11:04am
TC:

Sorry to cast a paal on the comments.
  11:05am
Chris:

I'm so confused!!
  11:07am
Sarah Paalin:

It's the whole spellin' thing, don'tcha know...
  11:07am
doug from DC:

Confusion be gone! I just fixed the DoN calendar.
  11:09am
yidd. man:

how can one send tunes to the dj's?
  11:09am
TC:

Thanks Doug.

Chris I was formerly posting as Chris, if that helps clear things up at all.
  11:11am
mark, uk:

i like this one
  11:11am
dc pat:

AAAAAAAAA WHAT HAPPENED??
  11:12am
still b/p:

Cleared...like a Scientologist.
  11:12am
Carmichael:

Comments zapped?!?
  11:12am
Cecile:

dj icepack, I must respectfully disagree with you.

it would not be a hit now.
Not enough auto-tune on it, and they need a drum machine.
  11:13am
mark:

earths magnetic poles switched

p.s. im training to be a teacher, what advice would u offer?
  11:13am
Amnesiac:

I ... I can't remember my name!
  11:13am
yidd.m:

haha, she was confused with so many comments. but i´ll ask again: how can one send tunes to the dj's??
  11:13am
Chris:

WHAT DID I DO NOW!!
  11:14am
D Crosby:

If only I could remember my name....
  11:14am
Carmichael:

Thanks for fixing the DoN list, Chris. And apparently all the other lists as well .... >:{
  11:16am
trouble:

the playlist is sort of like the atom bomb, one wrong click and it's all toast! thanks liz berg for saving my a**. SORRY all. the dj's are reachable via the schedule and you can send them emaill there as far as music tips, etc , to yiddm.
  11:17am
B-52s:

The Amnee-shack
is a little old place
where we can...do what now?
  11:17am
Carmichael:

Those UC Davis grads got SMARTS!!
  11:17am
Chris:

I sent an MP3 once via email - just don't send too much at once; you don't want to overwhelm a FMU DJ...it's scary when it happens.
  11:17am
doug from DC:

I just updated the DoN list with all the Bossa events through the end of February, if anyone is interested. Some cool shows planned, strange music lives in Washington! Some of it lives with me...
  11:19am
randomdude:

liz berg's so sweet :D
  11:20am
Chris:

Doug - what confused me is that there is a place called Bossa Nova in Chicago...as well as a Velvet Lounge.
  11:22am
doug from DC:

Yeah, DC clubowners have never been very original about naming their joints. I understand there is another Black Cat out there somewhere.
  11:23am
TC:

Thanks again Doug, much appreciated. Good to know people are looking at the calendar.

craving indian food so badly right now...
  11:24am
annie:

doug, just caught that black cat comment; we had one here from way back to the early 1900s. wonderful old spot for the "negroes" to hang out and one of the best places for pool with the real pros, back in the 70s.
  11:25am
BSI:

Just got back from a pesky distraction.
Looks like the District of Noisers are in da house!

...oh jeezus and don't get ME started on the indian food now...
  11:25am

craving ANY food right now---early breakfast, hard bike ride, no danishes...
  11:26am
bw:

why I love trouble.. part 10,000,006 - walking down houston st with erik enocksson in the ear and then trex!
  11:27am
C:

i think there's even a 9:30 club somewhere else in the country. DC had to have been the first for that though, right?
  11:27am
Kevin:

Bert Jansch does one of my favourite versions of Anji... not as good as the original of course. The Simon & Garfunkel one isn't bad either
  11:28am
Brian:

Don't think about paneer masala. Baigan bartha, aloo ghobi ...
  11:28am
annie:

thi si one of my fave pieces, and bert does it best, yes!!
  11:31am
BSI:

Brian; you are a very evil person. EVIL!
At least I've got curry carryout 2 blocks from this desk. Although I haven't found a crab malabar anywhere in DC - haven't had that since last visit to NYC @ Panna 2.
  11:32am
dc pat:

always thought 9:30 was a good name. Did that come from when they make the opening bands start playing?? Seems like it in my experience...
  11:32am
doug from DC:

DC indeed had the original and only Nightclub 9:30, originally at 930 F St., but now in a larger venue. Too bad the music there will never be as good as it was at the old venue. Or am I turning into a fogey?
  11:32am
dc pat:

don't forget channa masala..
  11:33am
dc pat:

nope, doug, you're right. shitty venue, but WAY better music.
  11:34am
Carmichael:

OK, great, just great. Now I have to trek from the suburbs into downtown and Kathmandu restaurant. The pull is too great ...

Hey, I can also grab that replacement stylus for my Technics turntable. Thanks for the paneer enticement.
  11:34am
C:

now also a 930 club in louisville kentucky apparently
  11:34am
TC:

I will always miss the old 9:30 terribly. There is no comparison.
  11:35am
BSI:

Doug, yes. Fogey. Join the club. The greatest tragedy of the 930 F Street rehab was the removal of the old ATLANTIC BUILDING ornament from over the door. Now it's like it was never there...
  11:36am
doug from DC:

The old 9:30 had a really distinctive odor that stayed in your clothes for days. I saw Bad Brains, Scream, X, etc. Trying to wrack my memory now.
  11:41am
J-Mar:

Oh, that 9:30 smell, how I remember it well.
  11:44am
BSI:

I saw early-period Rollins band there. For years after we referred to it as "taking a swim in Lake Henry"
  11:44am
doug from DC:

Difford and Tilbrook played the old 9:30 once. Sting was in town doing Threepenny Opera at Kennedy Center. At midnight, he came by and joined them for their encore, "Tempted." I was only about ten feet away from the stage.
  11:45am
andy richter:

...the future, leyland...?
  11:45am
J-Mar:

On a totally different topic -- thanks for playing Joyce! I haven't heard that record, must find it.
  11:48am
TC:

Husker Du, original Buzzcocks, Bad Brains, Mekons, and on and on.... and yes I remember the smell.
  11:50am
David L:

Ahhhh, the Clientele. Like stepping into a warm bath.
  11:53am
v k:

exceptionally enjoyable show today trouble - as always, thank u
  11:54am
BSI:

Jeezus, for me, a top-level skim of the old memory of 9:30 involves Psychic TV, Hawkwind, Suicidal Tendencies, Dickies, DC punk bands too numerous to mention, Survival Research Labs, Swans, etc....
  11:55am
doug from DC:

Oh yeah, saw Minor Threat there, Black Market Baby, etc. Bye all, send stuff and $$$ to Haiti. They gave us Barbancourt, it's the least we can do.
  11:56am
Francis:

Hey Trouble,
I'm just coming back home;too cold outside for masonry works !
Two days ago,my thirteen years old nephew,Adrien, who is a Jay Reatard's fan told me he wanted to learn at the guitar one of Reatard's tracks, purhaps "I'm watching you",he told me.I think he will be shocked by learning his death !
Oh thanks,I love this Clientele's track;marvellous last Clientele album:quite rare to hear so many ballads in a single album.
  11:58am
BSI:

now....... to the curry!
