Listener comments!

  9:03am annie:

.........and yes, i WAS listening to hotrod.. is it my imagination are sound levels down this am? seems so.
  9:07am annie:

and i am looking forward to some roy treats, even a few..
  9:10am Maggie in Rock Tavern:

I second that! Roy Orbison would have been 74 today.
  9:11am annie:

good morning doug!!! i figured out why my sound levels were off. i had the headphones plugged in and sitting on the table. :P hi maggie
  9:13am Drummer Some:

Sorry to disappoint, Annie and Maggie. No Roy O today. Not a philosophical decision, just didn't realize the import of the date. I will wear my shades throughout the show in tribute, though.
  9:13am Lisa from Brooklyn:

My sound was down too, but no headphones. Hm. Hi Maggie in Rock Tavern- my friends Bunny and Louise live there. Say hi if you know them!
  9:14am Parq:

Fess!!!

Annie: D'oh! I of course have never done anything like that.
  9:14am north guinea hills:

We need a Roy O/U Roy mashup.
  9:15am seang:

Cajun Style!
  9:15am Maggie in RT:

Lisa - I'm originally from the city too and no one has ever heard of Rock Tavern! Are your friends WFMU listeners too?
  9:16am Parq:

By the way, I knew a girl in college who wished she was like the woman in that Fess song. All she could talk about was how she wanted to get bald.
  9:17am annie:

man... i only got one roy song today.. perhaps it's youtube time, later.... later.. have to stop everything i'm doing for drumsome!
  9:17am Maggie/RT:

No worries, Doug. Hi Annie!
  9:22am Cecile:

Hi, all! Nice morning here.
  9:24am fishmonkeystew:

Good morning, Doug and my fellow audiophiles! How about a Roy Orbison/Charles Mingus mash-up?
  9:25am annie:

good morning cecile!!!
  9:25am Drummer Some:

Follow the link (at left) for Bobby Marchan to see him in his most famous performing persona.
  9:28am Cecile:

did you get my vitriolic novel in the mail, annie? LOL.

Today, I have nothing but nice things to say about New Zealand cheese. This little store keeps getting in samplers of it for cheap, and boy. Some of the best cheddar and blue cheese I've ever eaten.
  9:32am annie:

i did and i'm still wading through it. :) love your emails. and about the second bit, there?? yes!! cheese rules. i've been breaking my rules lately and eating more cheese as it seems to be alright so far. yumm!!!
  9:34am Cecile:

I'm glad to hear that! To paraphrase whoever said it, "Cheese is proof God loves us and wants us to be happy."
  9:34am Cecile:

Tell me more about this Joe Harriott and where to find?
  9:34am annie:

absolutement!!!
  9:39am Lisa from Brooklyn:

Maggie- they're probably not listeners but I make my pledge to Doug now to try to recruit! I'll email them now.
  9:41am Drummer Some:

Joe Harriott was an alto player from Jamaica who settled in London in the early-mid 1950s. Contemporaneously with Ornette, he was exploring similar harmonic territory in the form of almost folk-music like structures containing deep complexities that stealthily reveal themselves. Never received a tenth of the recognition he deserved. A mad passion of mine. Run, don't walk, to find copies of his early '60s releases "Abstract" and "Free Form." This particular LP, "Hum Dono," is long OOP and very hard to find. Dear listeners/friends outside of Toronto sent me a burn of it. Wow!
  9:44am Cecile:

I know Joe, but I didn't know Hum Dono! He was ahead of his time - particularly with the Indo Jazz fusion records. Ken Vandermark did a tribute to him a while back. I loved the idea of it, wasn't thrilled with the heavy use of trombone.
  9:46am Cecile:

I mean, "this joe harriott" as in particular record. Der. USE YOUR WORDS, CECILE!!!!! But I do think you should write all the reviews in the All Music Guide, Doug. You are so eloquent in your enthusiasm.
  9:47am Drummer Some:

Cecile, but then I wouldn't be able to trash all the people who already write the All Music reviews! (One of my favorite indoor sports.)
  9:54am annie:

fridays rock
  9:56am annie:

hey, i posted this tune on fb for the festival of holi!!
  9:57am annie:

i saw this cute little short long ago with a granddad taking his bored and totally controlled granddaughter to a pagwha festival!! what fun!
  10:09am Lisa from Brooklyn:

Damn it's hard to listen and work. What's holi and what's a pagwha? Hey Doug, is Lincoln playing ball this year?
  10:13am LizGig:

Hear, hear, Lisa! I'm going to have to stop listening (not quite yet, though, not quite yet) so I can get this task finished - Doug, you're just TOO GOOD! Hurrah for the archives.
  10:14am still b/p:

Surfing the radio while on an errand this morning, I heard a Christian bit of stand-up comedy as message-delivery-system. While the Sensational Zion Seekers and the Zion Travelers ain't converted me, they're a good deal more stirring and persuasive and satisfying in the Word and Glory department.
  10:15am Cecile:

Hardcore Christian comedy usually is something like:
"You're going to hell unless you're saved. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!"
  10:16am Drummer Some:

Lisa,
Yup, Linc is playing in the Cubs Division. Her team has green hats and jerseys and calls themselves, wait for it...

The Pickles

!!
  10:21am annie:

http://hinduism.about.com/od/holifestivalofcolors/a/holybasics.htm

they are the same
  10:23am Holy Ghost:

Praise be Mr Drummer! Can I get a "hell yeah" from the listeners out there?
  10:28am ∂avid:

i gotta look for a download for that Hum-Dono record when i get home from work tonight. I really won't leave the house until I find one...
  10:30am Lisa from Brooklyn:

Doug, that's better than the green boogers, the suggestions for Zach's green-outfitted soccer team. Luckily they chose the leprechauns. 'Tho' the assassins ran a close 2nd.
HELL YEA
  10:30am annie:

hell, yeah!!! plus one!
  10:31am holland oats:

i'd like to take this moment to say, at long last, wfmu iphone app + receiver docking station = radio on the stereo!
  10:32am seang:

HELL YEAH! it all starts in Cuba
  10:36am Dickdong UK:

There's an election going on over here. Sign outside one local Chapel, "Make sure you know where you are going to put YOUR cross. He did.
Hmmm
  10:36am trs:

hell, yeah!
  10:44am seang:

cubanos postizos are getting back together for a gig in NYC this summer! Postizo!
  10:49am Holy Ghost:

Phew, what a relief: thought you were gonna leave me hanging there for a moment. Got a bit carried away with that gospel music... stay strong brothers and sisters!
  10:56am jim v:

Thanks for waking up the whole family with salsa! Great show as always, Doug.
  11:07am Eric , TX:

OK, I volunteer to be punched in the face by Merle Haggard. Why "If We're Not Back in Love by Monday" though?
  11:08am paul b:

Oh. You're just playing this Merle Haggard song, because you heard him say on NPR the other day that he truley regreted recording this song. Doesn't seem that bad?
  11:10am Paul Sherratt:

When Merle Haggard turns up on the ipod shuffle in the car he sets our Guinea Pigs off singing ...
  11:10am Cecile:

Donna, get to the point...
  11:12am yayson:

everytime you play another country song i just keep turning the vol up louder.
  11:14am yayson:

i like how merle said he "must have been on dope or something" when he recorded "back in love..."
  11:14am Sean Daily:

Not even close to first comment! Woo hoo!
  11:17am Parq:

Doug, this is the best country set you've played in weeks, if not months, and that's going some.
  11:19am Carmichael:

Good morning all. Covering for one of my staff in the warehouse today, and turning them on to FMU. We'll see what happens ....
  11:22am El Thatchmo:

You are the brotherman, not the otherman!
  11:33am Drummer Some:

Paul B,
You are correct on all counts.
  11:41am Carmichael:

I heard the same thing. Way to twist the knife, Doug! :-)
  11:43am Sean Daily:

How is an affair an accident? "Whoops, I tripped and fell and we somehow ended up naked in your bed making the beast with two backs. So sorry."
  11:48am slugluv1313:

most excellent show, Mr. Schulkind -- enjoying it immensely!!!
