I'm a Yankee hater but my father knew the bullpen car drivers and they got us the tickets (it was the one season the Yankees played at Shea Stadium while Yankee Stadium was reonovated).

	11:38pm Michael from the Left Coast: Dan, further to your comment before about the dearth of long ball hitters, I think it was 1975 when Kingman had 26 home runs at the all star break--which was about the total a good hitter would have at the end of the season. I think it was a week after the All Star Break Kingman broke his finger and didn't return for at least six weeks and maybe longer. I remember on the day he returned the second place guy on the home run leader board caught Kingman (Kingman finished with 37 home runs which stood as the most by a Met for some time)

The post-Joan Payson Mets management, one of the worst in baseball history, lled by 1930s Payson boyfriend M. Donald Grant (and yes, I threw up in my mouth a little typing that) and her baseball-hating daughters, responded by dumping him the next year in the Midnight Massacre™.

	11:47pm john: I made it to Comiskey shortly before it closed. Every single seat in the park was somehow behind a pillar and the whole place reeked like a public convenience. Stick-in-the-mud preservationist that I am ,it should have been bulldozed years sooner.
	11:49pm nec13: I spent many a summer at Three Rivers Stadium. It was a terrible place to watch baseball, but I feel nostalgia for it.

	12:11am Brian: When I was around 6 (early 70s) I went to a Padres/Expos game with a "Bat Night" promotion -- all the kids got FULL-SIZE wooden Louisville Slugger bats. The burnt-in inscription on the bats where the player's signature goes, there was the old Jack in the Box logo...

	12:28am Joe: As a child of the late 80s early 90s, the 70's were a pretty large black hole as far as my baseball knowledge goes. I in fact only know 2 interesting things about 70's baseball. 1. My father claims to no only have attended, but to actually have started the Reggie! bar volley at the 1978 home opener against the White Sox. 2. The only player to play in three different forfeited games was one Mr. Rusty Torres - His played for the Yanks at the Senators last game in Washington which ended in a riot, played for Cleveland on Ten Cent Beer night, and was Traded for the White Sox just in time for Disco Demolition.
	12:29am AZ: As a kid in Cincinnati, my friends and i went to Riverfront Stadium every weekend to see the Reds. When that Aqua-Velva commercial was running, we would routinely sneak down near the dug-out so that we could scream out "Hey Pete Rose, what does a man really want from an aftershave?" at the tops of our lungs. He would occasionally look at us and grimace.

Back on topic - I actually saw my first baseball game at Shea with the summer park program - it was game 39 of Pete Rose's hitting streak (the one AFTER the game he broke the modern NL-record). The Mets got absolutely killed. We were up in the nosebleeds and I was actually petrified to move I was so afraid of the height. Seaver was a Red at this time (he didn't pitch that day) but I remember as the Mets were getting killed the crowd chanting "Let's Go Reds!" Willie Montanez was the "star" for the Mets at the time. Hot Dog!
	12:33am Danne D: My favorite player though (and what made me a Yankee fan in my youth) was Reggie Jackson. The 3 homers in a World Series game is what hooked me. Somewhere around here I have a copy of "The Reggie Jackson Scrapbook" which was sold as a kids book. The beauty of reading it as an adult was realizing just how massive Reggie's ego was. Good times <3

	12:34am john: Danne, I remember those wonderful days at Shea in the late '70s when you'd buy an upper deck ticket and the ushers would push you down to field level.
	12:36am Danne D: Alas John, I think the Reds were a huge draw that day - we also were part of a youth group which probably made the move down a bit more impractical. 	12:36am Michael from the Left Coast: In the bad guy, great player category (Pete Rose may top the list), I'm sad to tell you Danne is where you will find Reggie Jackson. He sat in front of me at a hockey game one night and he was a major jerk (he even asked to look at my program in the second period--after he ignore my request for an autograph--and then started leaving in the third period with my program until I said "Hey, are you going to give that back?" And he wasn't just a jerk to me, he was a jerk to everyone who approached him

	12:42am Michael from the Left Coast: More dickish Danne is was that Reggie ignored all those who approached him for autographs until photographers arrived, and even then he wouldn't sign for anyone with a felt tip pen and wouldn't sign if the ballpoint pen given him wasn't already clicked!
	12:43am john: On a practical note, Kekich was never really good, and Peterson had a lousy 1973, which made them a whole lot easier to trade. Sorry I'm 3000 miles away and won't be able to bring my Oscar Gamble locks to Brooklyn tomorrow! And on that note, I'm doing the Mickey Rivers shuffle back to bed.
	12:45am Danne D: Wow. Like I said, with the passage of time I'm not shocked at all. But since I was lucky enough to never meet him I can still treasure those memories :) Still remember catching the end of the Bucky Dent game after school in '78 :)
	12:45am Joe B: But Fritz was good, and this incident helped derail his career. Though I think he is still with the ex Mrs Kekich, so that worked out for him

Here are my additions: I was lucky enough to be at the 1974 Yankees’ game (which was held at Shea Stadium) in which Graig Nettles cracked his bat and all the superballs came bouncing out after he got a hit. I was really young, but so many folks in the stands didn’t know exactly what was going. I remember all the “boos” after he got called out. Does anyone remember Tug McGraw’s syndicated comic “Scroogie”? *I wrote to Roy White (of the Yankees) in 1973 and sent the letter to the Yankee organization in the Bronx. About a month later I received an autographed picture and card from Roy White mailed from his house in Wayne, New Jersey!

The new book Big Hair and Plastic Grass: A Funky Ride Through Baseball and America in the Swinging '70s (St. Martin's) tells the story of what happened when freewheeling 1970s pop culture crashed into the insular world of Major League Baseball. Author Dan Epstein (20th Century Pop Culture) is live in the studio to regale us with stories about the decade that was like no other either on or off the field. Note: no disco records will be burned during this event. As a matter of fact, they'll be played on the air! And be sure to come out to the Release Party at The Bell House in Brooklyn tomorrow night, Wednesday the 26th, and to the book signing at Rizzoli in Manhattan on Thursday the 27th.

	12:28am Joe: As a child of the late 80s early 90s, the 70's were a pretty large black hole as far as my baseball knowledge goes. I in fact only know 2 interesting things about 70's baseball. 1. My father claims to no only have attended, but to actually have started the Reggie! bar volley at the 1978 home opener against the White Sox. 2. The only player to play in three different forfeited games was one Mr. Rusty Torres - His played for the Yanks at the Senators last game in Washington which ended in a riot, played for Cleveland on Ten Cent Beer night, and was Traded for the White Sox just in time for Disco Demolition.
	12:29am AZ: As a kid in Cincinnati, my friends and i went to Riverfront Stadium every weekend to see the Reds. When that Aqua-Velva commercial was running, we would routinely sneak down near the dug-out so that we could scream out "Hey Pete Rose, what does a man really want from an aftershave?" at the tops of our lungs. He would occasionally look at us and grimace.

Back on topic - I actually saw my first baseball game at Shea with the summer park program - it was game 39 of Pete Rose's hitting streak (the one AFTER the game he broke the modern NL-record). The Mets got absolutely killed. We were up in the nosebleeds and I was actually petrified to move I was so afraid of the height. Seaver was a Red at this time (he didn't pitch that day) but I remember as the Mets were getting killed the crowd chanting "Let's Go Reds!" Willie Montanez was the "star" for the Mets at the time. Hot Dog!
	12:33am Danne D: My favorite player though (and what made me a Yankee fan in my youth) was Reggie Jackson. The 3 homers in a World Series game is what hooked me. Somewhere around here I have a copy of "The Reggie Jackson Scrapbook" which was sold as a kids book. The beauty of reading it as an adult was realizing just how massive Reggie's ego was. Good times <3

Here are my additions: I was lucky enough to be at the 1974 Yankees’ game (which was held at Shea Stadium) in which Graig Nettles cracked his bat and all the superballs came bouncing out after he got a hit. I was really young, but so many folks in the stands didn’t know exactly what was going. I remember all the “boos” after he got called out. Does anyone remember Tug McGraw’s syndicated comic “Scroogie”? *I wrote to Roy White (of the Yankees) in 1973 and sent the letter to the Yankee organization in the Bronx. About a month later I received an autographed picture and card from Roy White mailed from his house in Wayne, New Jersey!
