Favoriting May 25, 2010: '70s Baseball Dance Party with DAN EPSTEIN, author of Big Hair and Plastic Grass: A Funky Ride Through Baseball and America in the Swinging '70s
The new book Big Hair and Plastic Grass: A Funky Ride Through Baseball and America in the Swinging '70s (St. Martin's) tells the story of what happened when freewheeling 1970s pop culture crashed into the insular world of Major League Baseball. Author Dan Epstein (20th Century Pop Culture) is live in the studio to regale us with stories about the decade that was like no other either on or off the field. Note: no disco records will be burned during this event. As a matter of fact, they'll be played on the air! And be sure to come out to the Release Party at The Bell House in Brooklyn tomorrow night, Wednesday the 26th, and to the book signing at Rizzoli in Manhattan on Thursday the 27th.

Listener comments!

  11:08pm
Jessica:

J'adore, EFD. Way to open, & to exponentially improve my week.
  11:11pm
randy in NC:

What was it I read today that Centerfield was put into the baseball Hall of Fame?
  11:13pm
AZ:

OMG...that Vida Blue song...incredible! Any chance you'll grace us with "Say Hey, Willie" at some point?
  11:15pm
efd:

that's not the last Vida Blue song you'll hear tonight! But we don't have Say Hey Willie handy, sadly.
  11:16pm
lisa jane persky:

Hi Evan!
Killer set. Vida Blue! I forgot about all of that until now.
  11:16pm
Jessica:

SOL. Singing. Out. Loud.
  11:16pm
Joe B:

Randy, I think it is just that Fogerty is gonna perform at the Hall induction?
  11:23pm
john:

Greetings from the baseball-free UK....long live Fritz Peterson and Mike Kekich!
  11:27pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

Hey Dan--I was at the White Sox game against the Yankees when they wore the shorts (I believe it was one of three times they did it). I'm a Yankee hater but my father knew the bullpen car drivers and they got us the tickets (it was the one season the Yankees played at Shea Stadium while Yankee Stadium was reonovated).
  11:29pm
randy in NC:

@Joe B. Ah, thanks, that must be what it was...
  11:32pm
Joe B:

Pat Pierson - a great DJ. Formerly of WRSU, the Loop Lounge and the Melody bar. Recommended!
  11:32pm
nec13:

Best player of the 70's=Dave Kingman
  11:34pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

You are correct Dan
It was my first time at Yankee Stadium and that's why I went
  11:34pm
Joe B:

The Yankees actually played two seasons at Shea, 1974 and 1975
  11:34pm
AZ:

Does Dan's book discuss the "Baseball's Millionth Run" promotion of '76? I saw the million-and-first run get scored.
  11:35pm
nec13:

Michael, here's a clip of the Sox in action (with the shorts!)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQiX62Y1N_Q
  11:35pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

And you are correct as well Joe B.--I forgot about that
  11:35pm
jim:

is JUST before the 70s (1969), but would LOVE to hear "Pennant Fever" by the Chicago Cubs... if you don't have it onhand, would like to hear Dan's take on that CLASSIC nonetheless...
  11:36pm
john:

Yeah, I'm five hours ahead of you, so I know what you're going to talk about. Besides, the best player of the '70s was Dave Parker.
  11:37pm
jim:

here it is, in fact. on Chess, no less: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fAFDeQy1swc
  11:37pm
Michael from NJ:

What about the Orioles? They had the winningest pitcher, they did that alphabet thing... (too bad they are now a joke.
  11:38pm
AZ:

Bob Watson, of course, went on to make a brilliant appearance in "The Bad News Bears In Breaking Training."
  11:38pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

Dan, further to your comment before about the dearth of long ball hitters, I think it was 1975 when Kingman had 26 home runs at the all star break--which was about the total a good hitter would have at the end of the season. I think it was a week after the All Star Break Kingman broke his finger and didn't return for at least six weeks and maybe longer. I remember on the day he returned the second place guy on the home run leader board caught Kingman (Kingman finished with 37 home runs which stood as the most by a Met for some time)
  11:38pm
lisa jane persky:

Thurmon Munson, I love you wherever you are.
  11:39pm
jim:

I reviewed it on my blog! SELF-PROMOTION! LOVE THAT RECORD!
  11:42pm
Danne D:

Hey guys! I admire your first name, Dan. I actually got an Oscar Gamble autographed baseball at a card show once. Anything on the mighty expansion Blue Jays who finished 50 1/2 games back? Alas I think 'okay blue jays' was from the 80s. Btw, Dan should give efd some advice on his fantasy team :) Zing!
  11:42pm
nec13:

Another interesting fact about the mid 70's Oakland A's: They had the first and only pinch runner-Herb Washington.
  11:45pm
ben:

the 70's had great base stealers. the art of stealing bases isnt practiced anymore. statistics say you're not supposed to. Omar Moreno!!!
  11:45pm
Joe B:

Dave Kingman - only player to ever homer in every division in the same season!
  11:45pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

nec13 thanks for the link--Comiskey sure looked like a classic ballpark (never got there)
  11:45pm
john:

I think it was '76 when Kong got hurt and only hit five dingers after he got back. The post-Joan Payson Mets management, one of the worst in baseball history, lled by 1930s Payson boyfriend M. Donald Grant (and yes, I threw up in my mouth a little typing that) and her baseball-hating daughters, responded by dumping him the next year in the Midnight Massacre™.
  11:46pm
Joe B:

Kong traded for future Met Manager Bobby Valentine!
  11:47pm
toni daytona:

hello all
  11:47pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

John--you mentioned unmentionable--
The trading of Tom Seaver was one of the major heartbreaks of my life at that point.
Come to think of it is there no musical ode to Tom Terrifc?
  11:47pm
john:

I made it to Comiskey shortly before it closed. Every single seat in the park was somehow behind a pillar and the whole place reeked like a public convenience. Stick-in-the-mud preservationist that I am ,it should have been bulldozed years sooner.
  11:49pm
nec13:

I spent many a summer at Three Rivers Stadium. It was a terrible place to watch baseball, but I feel nostalgia for it.
  11:49pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

RIght on Bob Welch!
But I would have gone for Mystery Train
  11:52pm
jim:

honest question -- true or false: roger clemens' "milk" comment to bob welch while leaving the field in the 1990 alcs? haven't heard anything definitive on this one.
  11:52pm
jim:

(though roger shoulda won the cy young that year regardless)
  11:55pm
jim:

"definitive" meaning "did it happen"
  11:55pm
Jessica:

These guys lived in the apt. downstairs from ours, circa 1st-3rd grade.
OK, it was their producer. They just hung out for a few days.
Nice folks.
/citykid
  11:55pm
Joe B:

the 45 also had the strawberry scent!
  11:57pm
jim:

right or wrong, have always thought that this was just a funky version of the faster section of "surf's up"
  11:57pm
Jessica:

scratch n' sniff strawberries.

also?
Peaches & Herb.
Downstairs sipping pineapple juice on the fogbound balcony.
Sheesh. I never figured I'd get such 70's nostalgia.
  11:59pm
nec13:

Who knew Garry Maddox could sing?
  12:01am
Michael from the Left Coast:

Dan--if Cocaine had a look it would look like Bob Welch on the cover of the French Kiss album
  12:01am
john:

"The fans in Philly are really great." Clearly Mike Schmidt and the great, great Dick Allen weren't involved in the recording of this song.
  12:04am
nec13:

Dick "Don't Call Me Richie" Allen
  12:06am
Michael from the Left Coast:

nec13-- it might have been my first baseball game but I was there the night Dick Allen got lost on his way to Shea and was MIA for his game with the Philliies.
  12:08am
nec13:

Dick Allen's absence from the Baseball Hall of Fame is one of sports' great injustices. A tremendously underrated ballplayer.
  12:08am
Michael from the Left Coast:

Wasn't Pepitone the first guy in the locker room with a hair dryer
  12:09am
Pete:

Dan/Evan:

Having saw the Disco Demolition game, the suprising thing is that is that they really used explosives to blow up the records. When they blew up, that's what got the crowd ballistic
  12:09am
john:

Yes, Michael, for his rug.
  12:10am
Michael from the Left Coast:

I never knew it was a wig, but then again I hated the Yankees
  12:11am
Brian:

When I was around 6 (early 70s) I went to a Padres/Expos game with a "Bat Night" promotion -- all the kids got FULL-SIZE wooden Louisville Slugger bats. The burnt-in inscription on the bats where the player's signature goes, there was the old Jack in the Box logo...
  12:14am
john:

Donald Hall's "Dock Ellis In The Country Of Baseball" is an extraordinary book by one of America's great poets, too.
  12:19am
Michael from the Left Coast:

Is that the Meters behind Jimmy Lee?
  12:24am
efd:

that was the Love Experience backing up Jimmy Bee, per the liner notes.
  12:28am
Joe:

As a child of the late 80s early 90s, the 70's were a pretty large black hole as far as my baseball knowledge goes. I in fact only know 2 interesting things about 70's baseball.

1. My father claims to no only have attended, but to actually have started the Reggie! bar volley at the 1978 home opener against the White Sox.

2. The only player to play in three different forfeited games was one Mr. Rusty Torres - His played for the Yanks at the Senators last game in Washington which ended in a riot, played for Cleveland on Ten Cent Beer night, and was Traded for the White Sox just in time for Disco Demolition.
  12:29am
AZ:

As a kid in Cincinnati, my friends and i went to Riverfront Stadium every weekend to see the Reds. When that Aqua-Velva commercial was running, we would routinely sneak down near the dug-out so that we could scream out "Hey Pete Rose, what does a man really want from an aftershave?" at the tops of our lungs. He would occasionally look at us and grimace.
  12:30am
Joe:

excuse the glaring typos - we're having our own ten cent beer night whilst enjoying the show
  12:31am
Sybil:

So do we get Jim Palmer Jockey ads to make up for that Pete Rose Aqua Velva ad? Don't know how you'd do it on radio, but...

(BTW Great show so far! I'm buried in work, and couldn't get to comment till now.)
  12:31am
Danne D:

okay now I'm actually on my computer :)
Hi toni!
Back on topic - I actually saw my first baseball game at Shea with the summer park program - it was game 39 of Pete Rose's hitting streak (the one AFTER the game he broke the modern NL-record). The Mets got absolutely killed. We were up in the nosebleeds and I was actually petrified to move I was so afraid of the height. Seaver was a Red at this time (he didn't pitch that day) but I remember as the Mets were getting killed the crowd chanting "Let's Go Reds!"

Willie Montanez was the "star" for the Mets at the time. Hot Dog!
  12:33am
Danne D:

My favorite player though (and what made me a Yankee fan in my youth) was Reggie Jackson. The 3 homers in a World Series game is what hooked me. Somewhere around here I have a copy of "The Reggie Jackson Scrapbook" which was sold as a kids book. The beauty of reading it as an adult was realizing just how massive Reggie's ego was. Good times <3
  12:33am
Joe B:

I did bring a Rose Blows banner to opening day at Shea vs. the Phillies in 1982
  12:34am
john:

Danne, I remember those wonderful days at Shea in the late '70s when you'd buy an upper deck ticket and the ushers would push you down to field level.
  12:36am
Danne D:

Alas John, I think the Reds were a huge draw that day - we also were part of a youth group which probably made the move down a bit more impractical.

Found a nice write-up by someone who like me was a Reggie Jackson fan as a kid - he mentions his purchase of "The Reggie Jackson Scrapbook".

http://bronxbanter.baseballtoaster.com/archives/700274.html
  12:36am
Michael from the Left Coast:

In the bad guy, great player category (Pete Rose may top the list), I'm sad to tell you Danne is where you will find Reggie Jackson. He sat in front of me at a hockey game one night and he was a major jerk (he even asked to look at my program in the second period--after he ignore my request for an autograph--and then started leaving in the third period with my program until I said "Hey, are you going to give that back?" And he wasn't just a jerk to me, he was a jerk to everyone who approached him
  12:38am
Joe B:

How about a Volume 2!
  12:38am
Danne D:

I'm totally not shocked, Michael (except at Reggie being at a hockey game). That's actually a cool story in retrospect :)
  12:39am
Joe B:

Torres was in the Graig Nettles trade with the Yankees
  12:40am
Danne D:

Here's a link on Amazon with a great link to the cover art :)
http://www.amazon.com/Reggie-Jacksons-Scrapbook-Jackson/dp/0525623345/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1274848798&sr=8-1
  12:42am
Michael from the Left Coast:

More dickish Danne is was that Reggie ignored all those who approached him for autographs until photographers arrived, and even then he wouldn't sign for anyone with a felt tip pen and wouldn't sign if the ballpoint pen given him wasn't already clicked!
  12:43am
john:

On a practical note, Kekich was never really good, and Peterson had a lousy 1973, which made them a whole lot easier to trade. Sorry I'm 3000 miles away and won't be able to bring my Oscar Gamble locks to Brooklyn tomorrow! And on that note, I'm doing the Mickey Rivers shuffle back to bed.
  12:45am
Danne D:

Wow. Like I said, with the passage of time I'm not shocked at all. But since I was lucky enough to never meet him I can still treasure those memories :)

Still remember catching the end of the Bucky Dent game after school in '78 :)
  12:45am
Joe B:

But Fritz was good, and this incident helped derail his career. Though I think he is still with the ex Mrs Kekich, so that worked out for him
  12:46am
Joe:

I bought this Instant Funk record on Record Store day.

Dunno what that says about me.

Great interview! I will in fact be buying this book for my dad for fathers day.

Actually I'll probably buy it the week before so I can read it a few times first.
  12:50am
Danne D:

OMG - total awesomeness.
Here's an at-bat by Johnny Wockenfuss. Best batting stance ever!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ckw7V7U2eMs
  12:53am
Joe:

I take it back, I got the self-titled album the song is on, not the 12"
  12:55am
efd:

either way, a fine record store day purchase.

Thanks everyone for your comments, stories, etc - very much appreciated (and entertaining to boot!)
  12:55am
Danne D:

Evan, I assume you've seen this film on Bill "Spaceman" Lee?
"High and Outside"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6OJEmdAx9E4
  12:57am
Danne D:

This all makes me think of my nostalgia for the John Ziegler NHL. Marketing "geniuses" have ruined damn near everything - it's all about this homogenized static "experience" now no matter what stadium/arena you go to :(
  12:59am
efd:

I've seen a couple of Bill Lee movies/docs, but the name of that one doesn't sound familiar. I'll chec k out the link tomorrow.
  1:02am
Danne D:

It's midnight at the home of Disco Demolition night EFD :)
  1:03am
Sybil:

He did say "Central Time",
  1:04am
Joe:

Midnight Ticket Oasis - now with a fully backed guarantee.
  1:07am
Joe:

note - it's pronounced Dasss Racist. As in a slangy way to say "that's racist"
  1:08am
Danne D:

1977 Opening Day - first game in Blue Jays history. Snow on the field and the White Sox in those classic uniforms with the hideous collars (but no shorts, eh)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AmF8GGAovj8
  1:09am
Joe:

Any time.
  1:10am
Aharon:

You would get record fund drive $ if your premium were just a 60-minute CD (or 700-minute MP3 CD) of you offering various ways to say "Le Poisson Rouge." Just sayin'...
  1:10am
Sybil:

How meta.
  1:13am
Danne D:

Aharon = Canadian? Fund Drive?

Hi Sybil :)

I think EFD's next premium should be baseball themed with a good dollop of Super Sox 75
  1:15am
Sybil:

I did not recall John Wockenfuss until I checked Danne's link, and then thought, "Oh yeah, that guy." How could I forget that name?
  1:17am
Sybil:

1975-1972? They go backward in time?
  1:18am
efd:

whoops! should have been '82 - fixed!
  1:21am
Joe:

How did Moby get involved in this?!

It boggles the mind.
  1:21am
efd:

All will be revealed on my show in the next few weeks.
  1:28am
efd:

and by the way, Moby *shreds* on guitar.
  1:32am
Aharon:

Danne, I should knock you clear into the next province for making such accusations.
  1:35am
Joe:

man I used to hate Moby, then I kinda liked him, then I hated him again, then I saw him live and danced my ass off so I secretly liked him, but I may now just have to openly like him.
  1:35am
Danne D:

lol, it's just that Nardwuar is the only other person I've seen use the phrase "Fund Drive" :)
  1:46am
Danne D:

Thanks for another fantastic show EFD!
You're like the Paul Molitor of DJs - always consistently excellent :)
  1:48am
efd:

ha! Thanks Danne!
  1:55am
Michael from the Left Coast:

My first bass was a Univox! they made really good instruments
  1:57am
pfapfap:

Oh man this always reminds me of the week I spent in Delaware last summer. Out here on the west coast enjoying wawa memories!
  12:20pm
efd:

Just a quick note in case anyone who commented last night is checking back -- THANK YOU all for your comments during the show last night!! Sorry we didn't have a chance to acknowledge and respond to them all, but it was great to see how many people were enjoying the show. I was a little concerned about how folks would respond to a lot of non-music-related talking, and it was definitely reassuring to see all the baseball chatter during the show. Thanks again!
  3:28pm
Mike Sin:

Awesome show, Evan. Great job of tying the music into the discussion.
Here are my additions:

*I was lucky enough to be at the 1974 Yankees’ game (which was held at Shea Stadium) in which Graig Nettles cracked his bat and all the superballs came bouncing out after he got a hit. I was really young, but so many folks in the stands didn’t know exactly what was going. I remember all the “boos” after he got called out.

*Does anyone remember Tug McGraw’s syndicated comic “Scroogie”?

*I wrote to Roy White (of the Yankees) in 1973 and sent the letter to the Yankee organization in the Bronx. About a month later I received an autographed picture and card from Roy White mailed from his house in Wayne, New Jersey!
  7:20pm
future stress recordings:

Evan, as someone who used to sport a fro, I just wanna give props to a kickass show...and the Sonny / Sunsets support is so much appreciated ...thx man
