Every show starts with the ’70s! We’ll rediscover forgotten rockers, revisit unfairly maligned disco beats and replay power-pop favorites. Next: plenty of new releases, occasional live bands and more. Don’t let the nickname confuse you.

Favoriting June 30, 2010: SOFT TAGS live set!
Soft Tags' latest release, the double CD Mathematical Monsters, garnered near-universal comparisons to early Clean and Go-Betweens, and we see no reason to buck that trend. We're also confident that it's the best album ever to be inspired by Benoit Mandelbrot. The Portland-based group is on tour across the USA - check out their myspace page for complete tour info, and make sure you catch them in person and/or on the radio.

Listener comments!

  9:02pm
john:

Hey Evan! One more cool thing about the Wednesday slot...a show that starts on time--one or two more songs! (And good luck with Loney.)
  9:07pm
efd:

Hi John! We should clarify for the non-baseball fans in the audience that you're referring to James Loney, not Roy. :)

Good point about the start time, although I was always enjoying whatever was happening on Tom's show so much that I didn't really care if he ran over!
  9:10pm
cheri:

efd--have a happy & safe 4th
  9:11pm
john:

I'd never waive a Groovie!
  9:16pm
efd:

ha, I should hope not!

Hi Cheri, happy & safe 4th to you too.
  9:32pm
eappy:

this is still strangely early.
  9:33pm
efd:

I know!
  9:37pm
AZ:

I remain un-used to listening to this show during daylight hours. (but i'm working on it.)
  9:41pm
efd:

yeah, I still haven't settled into a good routine yet for this new time. But, I sure am glad when I get home and it's barely 1am!
  9:47pm
efd:

Also, I'm not sure why exactly but it didn't occur to me to take any photos during the session! I guess they had me hypmotized.
  9:48pm
efd:

plus it didn't even occur to me until today that I forgot to take pictures in the first place.
  9:55pm
AZ:

That's tragic. But perhaps it will simply increase the mystique...
  9:57pm
Sybil:

Good evening all!

WhoTF is Roy Loney?
  9:58pm
Swami:

Great stuff this far EFD! Thanks.
  9:58pm
efd:

Sybil! I'm glad your here, there's a question in the interview I asked with you in mind.

Roy Loney is a founding member of the Flamin' Groovies.
  9:59pm
john:

Sybil--Guitarist for the ACTUAL world's greatest rock 'n roll band™.
  9:59pm
efd:

thanks, Swami!
  10:01pm
Sybil:

Oooooh. Thanks., efd.

The interview hasn't happened yet? ::checking::

Thanks for answering my question, EFD and john. I actually should have known that. I blame the fact that I haven't had dinner yet.

Great music to cook by!
  10:05pm
?:

guitarist?
  10:08pm
minnesota jeff:

THE PONYS! So good.
  10:10pm
efd:

?, I'm not sure if you're saying "who was the guitarist" or "guitarist? It didn't sound like there was much guitar going on." Richard and Curtis both played guitar, and many effects pedals were in use.
  10:11pm
efd:

Jeff, coincidentally here's a band from your state following the Ponys.
  10:12pm
Kat:

Ponys yesss.
  10:15pm
john:

I have a vague recollection of seeing Single Bullet Theory in about 1980. Might have opened for the Stranglers. Or not.
  10:17pm
efd:

Not out of question, that's when they were active.
  10:18pm
Swami:

Rockin/ the rockin' hard rockers. It is what drips of a certain age call "Tasty". Never thought I'd chuck the adjective at Single Bullet Theorry.
  10:19pm
john:

I believe I saw them at the late, lamented Shaboo Inn in Willimantic, CT. Burned, presumably for insurance, circa 1982-3.
  10:20pm
minnesota jeff:

Hmm, I was out of the room when "Real Numbers" were playing. I know they are from here, but I have yet to see them / hear them.
  10:22pm
Sybil:

Is that "real numbers" as in not imaginary numbers? Do we have ourselves a math theme developing tonight?
  10:28pm
Swami:

Ain't shittin'u just got me withy that one; Farg North Decoder.35 years later.
  10:42pm
cheri:

g'nite evan,,,remember be safe
  10:47pm
Sybil:

Bubblegum has hidden meanings?
  10:47pm
john:

Bubblegum Music...etc.. is actually a reissue of a 1969ish comp on Buddah. More recently a great book on bubblegum had the same title. Pop nerd moment ends.
  10:55pm
efd:

ah - thanks John!
  10:58pm
lisa jane persky:

Gary Valentine and The Know on that Sharp Cuts album Elektra/Asylum
  10:59pm
lisa jane persky:

Great show, efd!
  11:00pm
efd:

thanks, ljp! And thanks for the Sharp Cuts info
  11:10pm
lisa jane persky:

you're very welcome. love your bubblegum colors, too.
  11:18pm
emma b:

ah thanks A LOT mr. funk d, for making me need instant gratification buying for music that won't be officially released for 2 more weeks! (yes. the bublegum comp... ) :) great set!
  11:20pm
efd:

It's what I do, Emma. It's what I do.

(and thanks!)
  11:24pm
Brian:

Well into your third hour of yumminess, and loving it here.... The music has been a fine companion elevating an evening otherwise mired in the ordinary.
  11:27pm
efd:

Hey Brian, thanks for checking in - glad you're enjoying the show!
  11:37pm
Brian:

Too bad The Liminanas wasn't on an LP, was definitely ready to hear another track...
  11:37pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

Just joined in--nice to see some Meredith Meyer on the playlist. She sang an amazing version of Olivia Newton John's "Magic" at a karaoke party we both attended!
  11:39pm
AZ:

Eerie synchronicity again. Just played this Flash & The Pan album all the way through last week for the first time since probably 1985. "Hey Saint Peter" remains a total classic; "Down Among The Dead Men" ain't bad either. And this, of course.
  11:41pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

ljp-- not only are The Know on the Sharp Cuts album--its's the best song on the album (wait, is Heart of Stone by SVT on that too, I can't remember now).
  11:42pm
efd:

ha! that's pretty funny, AZ.

Michael, I can totally hear her doing that ONJ song. I think Hearts Of Stone might be on Declaration Of Independents...?
  11:42pm
efd:

Brian, I think there's a Liminanas full-length in the works.
  11:44pm
lisa jane persky:

I can't believe this I'm not sure I remember which song it is, Michael. Is it "I Like Girls"?
  11:44pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

EFD FTW--Declaration of Independents it was
LJP--it was I Like Girls
  11:46pm
Sybil:

j"je ne suis pas tres drogue" played recently on the efd show (another liminanas hit!!!)
  11:49pm
Sybil:

Oops, jittered on the keyboard there.

I just get so excited thinking about liminanas.
  11:50pm
lisa jane persky:

Thanks, Michael.
  11:58pm
lisa jane persky:

This cut is scary soundrack music if you're like me and happen to be looking at hurricane footage. Reminds me of the Sorcerer soundtrack from Tangerine Dream which is a favorite of mine.
  11:58pm
john:

On another topic, rain delay or no, I can't believe this show is going to end before the Mets game.
  12:00am
lisa jane persky:

Goodnight, Evan.
