July 17, 2010: The List
The summer is filled with free outdoor music. Hard to beat. I made a list of shows I want to see & sent it around to friends. Today's show is based, mostly, on that list. I already saw some cool stuff-- Tinariwen, Bobby Sanabria, Greg Ribot-- but the two best were Rosanne Cash at Governor's Island and Ben Vaughn at Maxwell's. Stay tuned for a taste.
Listen to this show:

Tinariwen | Chatma | This amazing North African groove band played at Central Park Summerstage a few weeks ago. Good morning trance music. This tune from their "Amassakoul" album (World Village, 2003) | 0:14:48 (Pop-up) |
Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou | Ma Dou Sou Nou Mio | Hot African funk from Benin. Rob W says keep an eye out for these guys: just played NYC & will be back I know it's a bit early for this stuff but it's worth it. | 0:21:24 (Pop-up) |
Seun Kuti & Fela's Egypt 80 | Fire Dance | When brother Femi played Lincoln Center, he said he would not go to see the Fela musical about his dad unless they promised to bring it to Lagos. A few days later, the producers agreed! Go Femi. This is another of Fela's sons, playing with some of Fela's old band members. | 0:31:36 (Pop-up) |
Justin Adams | Wayward | Guitarist Adams played with Robert Plant at that great festival in the desert; here he is playing the blues. | 0:39:17 (Pop-up) |

John Boutte | Broke Down the Door/The Treme Song | Oops. Sorry about that. I'll have to track down a better copy of John Boutte's excellent "Good Neighbor" album. Next time. | 1:02:57 (Pop-up) |
