Judging mainly from old movies and vague childhood memories, I get the impression that the hot NOLA-type jazz that was played in The Black Zoo excerpt (and that was hot!) was really the most popular and ubiquitous style of my parents' generation (30's-50's), but is now still considered kind of archaic, given later developments in the music, much the way Chuck Berry's music was from the mid-60's through the late 70's. There must be mountains of recordings of that stuff laying around in various places.
