First: Zizek is one of the driving forces of the cumbia revival and the electro-cumbia-remix movement - a cutting edge cumbia-driven but genre-clashing club / record label (ZZK records) / inter-disciplinary artistic scene based in Buenos Aires. Three of Zizek's finest homegrown Argentine artists are on this summer's Zizek North American tour (which kicks off at Le Poisson Rouge Tuesday July 20 and Brooklyn Bowl Thursday July 22): Chancha Via Circuito, El Remolon, and Tremor. We'll meet all of them, and we'll be treated to a live set from Tremor.
Later: Chico Trujillo, Chile's wildly popular nine-piece cumbia battalion, mixes classic cumbia with hints of rock and ska and a general air of revelry and irreverence. Seeking to expand the borders of their endless fiesta, Chico Trujillo has launched a US invasion - with a US-debut cd, Chico de Oro on Barbes Records (a retrospective of their first decade in the trenches) and a very successful tour last month. While they were here we captured Chile's merry pranksters of cumbia for an exuberant live session.
