  8:17am
Meghan:

Cause of the fires?
  8:18am
Elwyn:

Hey,

I've got a couple of questions about America:
a) Why do different states have different taxes on stuff?
b) Could someone explain to me about Indian reservations.
  8:19am
Dave B:

Not 100% sure. Might be related. Our network over there burped bigtime waking me up... Seems better now.
  8:19am
Chuck:

A) Apart from federal income tax the states control their own taxes in whatever way they see fit.
  8:20am
Meghan:

Elwyn, each state governs itself, so they have say on their taxes, as for Indian Reservations, that could take a long while! We took their land and gave them a horrible little plot.
  8:21am
Chuck:

B)I will need a more specific question in order to answer. I studied Native Americans in college.
  8:24am
Elwyn:

B) wasn't really a specific question.
I was watching the second last episode of "Wonderfalls" and it's set on a reservation.

The Native Americans (guests on the show) were having a disput on how to run their reservation. One of them, a lawyer, wasn't supportive of casinos. Others were supportive.
One of the regular characters had a fraction of Native American heritage and wanted to claim it to get money to pay off her student loans.

How accurate is all that?
  8:25am
Chuck:

Oh, I think I know sort of what you were driving at, Elwyn. Indian reservation are considered autonomous states under the juristiction of the US department of the Interior. It's been a mess since they started...
  8:27am
Elwyn:

When did it start?

Another thing was that another of the main characters was visiting the reservation just to get cheap cigarettes because she wasn't paying tax on them or something then the lawyer made her full price.
  8:27am
Chuck:

Happens all the time, Elwyn. In order to claim such the Dept. of the Interior has some screw ball rules for you to prove that you are a member of a specific Native American group. Government crap!
  8:27am
Dave B:

If I remember correctly, Native Americans were relocated to reservations in the mid 1800's to "protect them" from encroaching settlers.

As far as the fractional heritage, that goes back to the "one drop rule"
  8:28am
jeff p:

GUAM!
  8:29am
Dave B:

MIDWAY!
  8:30am
Chuck:

In my studies of this some Native American groups don't even get recognized at all! So the whole ethnic group gets NOTHING under the government rules!
  8:30am
jeff p:

PUERTO RICO!
  8:30am
Chuck:

SAMOA!
  8:31am
Elwyn:

@Meghan:
Virginia is scaring me. It's making me think of "Deliverance"! - I know that's Georgia.

@Chuck:
I think Australia has something similar but without the casinos. It's a mess too with alcohol, petrol sniffing and child abuse. The previous government introduced laws a few years ago that some considered racist because it made aborigines have to do stuff - OK. I can't remember what but they were tougher laws.
  8:31am
Andy in Berlin:

Hi everyone. Just got in. I guess I'm going to have to get this one on the archives.

  8:33am

  8:52am

  8:52am

  8:53am
Meghan:

Jeff P- I do have a friend that would have Jethro Tull on their personal list of Not Allowed. He hates flutes in rock songs
  8:54am
jeff p:

I'm with your friend there, Meghan
  8:56am
Dave B:
