Favoriting October 27, 2010: Fourth Annual InterActiv™ Record Fair Listening Party!

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

For the fourth year in a row, I'm listing my WFMU Record Fair purchases and giving YOU THE LISTENER the opportunity to tell me which record(s) you want to hear. I restrained myself somewhat at this year's fair, limiting my shopping to a handful of tables and mostly focusing on singles. Take a look, and post a comment if there's something you want to hear!

Listener comments!

  2:31pm
efd:

I'll break the ice by saying that I'll definitely be playing the first two on the list, as they came highly recommended by Chuck Warner. Haven't had a chance to listen to them yet, though.
  3:30pm
Joe B:

stories
andy paley
ian lloyd
5000 Volts
  3:31pm
Joe B:

The Wild Carnation track is great too, though I know what that sounds like!
  3:32pm
Amanda:

It's so magical when InterActiv RF Listening Party time comes around! Make mine White Lies, Blue Eyes by Bullet, 1-hit wonder extraordinaire.

I think I'd also like to hear what Tin Tin sounds like.
  3:46pm
efd:

I'm curious about that Tin Tin single too. It's not the Stephen Duffy Tintin, obvs.

Joe, thanks for your requests! The b-side of the 5000 Volts single is "Still On Fire," or something like that, which just makes it that much more intriguing.
  3:55pm
Missouri Mike:

Sorry fellow listeners, but I need to hear the All Sports Band.
  4:16pm
Pat in Philadelphia:

Ladies Who Lunch -"Everybody's Happy Nowadays"
Radio Stars - "Dirty Pictures"
Steve Dahl & Teenage Radiation - "Do You Think I'm Disco"
Richard Strange - "International Language"
John Cale - "Dead Or Alve"

Don't know if I'll be able to listen live, Evan, but I'll be checking out the archive later.
  5:20pm
efd:

Thanks Pat! I may not be able to fit all of those in, but I'll spin at least a couple of them for sure.
M. Mike, no need to apologize - even without your request I would have been inflicting that on the listeners.
  5:20pm
mackro:

Stanky Brown Group and, most importantly, the All Sports Band!
  5:45pm
Jason G:

That Mets album, the John Cale, The Tights (great find!)
  6:06pm
Marc:

I can always dig on some Brian Ferry - "This Is Tomorrow", and John Cale - "Dead or Alive"...hmmmm how many do i get to suggest?
  7:50pm
Joe:

Praxis! 1984! It's the only really good track on that EP unfortunately. Also, George Baker and APB. Though I have no doubt you were going to play APB anyway.

PS EFD- The Praxis EP is not self-titled, it's titled "1984", however its pretty hard to tell from the packaging.
  8:53pm
minnesota jeff:

I second the John Cale request.

PLUS:

"Lets go mets"
Cochise - Loves made a fool of you
Humans - "I Live In The City"
  9:02pm
E.L.:

How are we going to top Howard Hughes?
  9:04pm
john:

I can't turn down Be Bop Deluxe, esp as I nearly bought it myself! and Rich Kids, played that album to dust 30 years ago. Great haul!
  9:05pm
Scott:

The Humans EP is great, I have that. Def. play "I Live in the City". Id like to hear the Rich Kids, John Cale, and BeBop DeLuxe singles.
  9:05pm
john:

I'll double Scott's picks and add the John Cale. Got my dorm heartily sick of that record decades ago...
  9:06pm
Holly in NC:

5000 volts, stories, steve dahl, uncle vic
  9:09pm
efd:

Hi everyone! 5000 Volts coming up... you(se) asked for it!
  9:11pm

  9:18pm
Joe:

this is spectacular. Just really really great. Wow.
  9:18pm
arfortiyef:

wow, fantastic buzzcocks cover!
  9:18pm
cheri:

i'll be listening evan
  9:20pm
efd:

Loving all the requests! I do believe I'll need to extend the InterActiv™ Record Fair Listening Party into a second set to accommodate them (as well as my own!)
  9:20pm
efd:

also, stay tuned for the awesome new efd theme song!!
  9:21pm
cheri:

efd--will you play tin tin for me??
  9:21pm
Holly in NC:

This IS good - I'd only ever heard the 'Kims we love' 7" before - thanks!
  9:21pm
efd:

yep, tin tin coming up in the next set. (It's the early 70s Tin Tin, btw)
  9:22pm
minnesota jeff:

CALE!
  9:24pm
Joe:

this is the worst bon jovi cover I've ever heard.
  9:26pm
cheri:

evan please deticate it to me,,thnx evan,,,
  9:26pm
peterntrinh:

BIG UPS TO EUGE!
  9:27pm
minnesota jeff:

  9:27pm
Kat:

New theme is made of awesome!
  9:30pm
Kat:

Also I'm curious to hear the Brian Protheroe... have a vague recollection of that from the 70s
  9:31pm
RexxHavoc:

yoh! pop the cap on the mo-at n spray that
Champagne - "Rock & Roll Star"
  9:33pm
minnesota jeff:

All Sports Band cover: http://blogs.citypages.com/gimmenoise/allsportsband.jpg
  9:37pm
john:

Freddy Sanchez has just hit his third straight double off Lee.
  9:38pm
cheri:

evan could you please deticate the tin tin tune to me,,,i know i can always count on you evan,,
  9:39pm
minnesota jeff:

Question: Can anyone think of why "Honi Soit" of all of John Cales album would be the only one to make it on the US billboard charts? This is the album that had the Cale track EFD played. I've never heard the album - but it just seems odd to me.
  9:42pm
Amanda:

Heh! Better than toast & marmalade, probably.
  9:43pm
john:

I'd guess because it had a minor hit in Dead or Alive and it was just the right time, 1981. Bunch of other great songs on it, too, but I'd put most of it on timing.
  9:43pm
Joe:

"Dead or Alive" is the worst Bon Jovi cover I've ever heard.
  9:44pm
minnesota jeff:

I guess I had no idea "Dead or Alive" was a hit.
  9:45pm
john:

First record on a new label too--maybe A&M put some money into marketing it?
  9:47pm
john:

Actually, I don't really remember if it was a hit or not, but I was at school in the depths of Central Connecticut, where there was nothing but dinosaur rock stations, and it got a lot of airplay between the Molly Hatchet two-fers.
  9:48pm
minnesota jeff:

Well I would bet the theory of it being his first A&M record and getting a promotional push and going more mainstream is the case. But he still got dumped by A&M after the record due to low sales numbers. #154 on the US charts at its release (highest US debut).
  9:51pm
minnesota jeff:

Do you think Praxis listened to "Rockit" a few times?
  9:53pm
Kat:

also sounds Trevor Horn-ish to me
  9:54pm
minnesota jeff:

I think you just burned Praxis, not me.
  9:58pm
efd:

Fair enough.

Also, LOL at Joe's "Dead Or Alive" joke.
  10:00pm
efd:

(maybe that will keep him from posting it a third time.)
  10:00pm
huppy:

go SF!
  10:00pm
huppy:

go SF!
  10:02pm
Holly in NC:

ooh, a winner here (pinball)!
  10:03pm
calzone!:

In honor of the WS, I respectfully request that you play a deep cut from that Metsie LP you got! Thanks!
  10:04pm
Joe:

there's an impostor on this board...
  10:05pm
efd:

oh, so there is! My apologies, I didn't catch that at first - just thought you were being funny.
  10:06pm
minnesota jeff:

Ima diggin this Cochise!
  10:06pm
Holly in NC:

Re Brian Protheroe, per Wiki - "In 2007 he was cast as Saruman in the original stage musical version of The Lord of the Rings." !
  10:06pm
Joe:

Never!

And I retract my reflexive Stanky Brown Group hate. Quite an excellent song. But man, what a name.
  10:06pm
Danne D:

Hi there Funk Fans :)

Stuck at work but at least I can hear EFD :)
  10:08pm
Danne D:

8( I have to listen to the archive as I missed somethintg described as Trevor-Hornish 8(

  10:09pm
RexxHavoc:

Mr. Met.....
  10:09pm
Brian:

I know I should know this, Evan, but are you Mets, Yankees, or other?
  10:10pm
Kat:

@Holly in NC - ! indeed !
  10:11pm
Danne D:

Bernie Carbo would disapprove of your question, Brian. As would Ted Fucking Williams :)
  10:11pm
efd:

Mets when it comes to NY teams, but the Red Sox are my primary team.
  10:12pm
Danne D:

(sadly even cannot play the song Ted Fucking Williams on his show) - it's by the Baseball Project
  10:12pm

Description: Man with a baseball for a head
  10:14pm
cheri:

evan & danne YOU ROCK!!!!
  10:16pm
Danne D:

You're too kind, cheri. I can't even say I belong in the same paragraph as EFD much less the same sentence :)
  10:16pm
minnesota jeff:

Oof, this song.
  10:16pm
Danne D:

Evan, can I put in a request for "Okay, Blue Jays"?
:)
  10:18pm
Brian:

I thought Red Sox, but didn't want to presume while the Mets song was playing...
see Bernie Carbo, raise RIchie Hebner...
  10:18pm
Danne D:

Think the blind man in the bleachers is sitting in an empy stadium right now?
  10:22pm
Brian:

oops I meant Butch Hobson [fail...]
  10:24pm
Danne D:

That song wasn't abut David Patterson was it?

Oh wait, I just read the whole side comments. EFD Really is taking requests tonight!!

8( I missed out on the record fair - the one year I probably could make it, my friend has to get married that day.

I was gonna be grumpy that the 2011 fair was gonna be right before election day again (and thus unattendable by me) but it'll be 10 days out so I'll at least possibly be able to sneak out and go.
  10:26pm
Danne D:

Did you go to the record fair, cheri?

Also - Hi Amanda if you are still lurking on the comments board - I'm sure you hauled in a ton of good music at the fair :)
  10:29pm
Ike:

Greetings from Bangkok. Just tuned in.
  10:30pm
Danne D:

Is this the Ike that's usually in Jersey City or a whole new Ike? Either way, welcome :)
  10:30pm
cheri:

no danne i missed it ,,i was out of town,,i'm sorry,,,but were you there??
  10:31pm
efd:

Bangkok! The hell you say!
  10:31pm
Ike:

Same old Ike! It's 9:32 a.m. here.
  10:32pm
Danne D:

sadly no 8( - I would've gone Saturday but my friend got married that day. Sunday I tried to do both the record fair and watch my Bengals and failed. Next time, right? :)

Congrats Evan - you are morning drive in Thailand!
  10:36pm
cheri:

evan could you please do me another small favor and play "I AINT GOT TIME ANYMORE" by the glass bottle ,,if you do i'll forever be in your debt,,
  10:38pm
minnesota jeff:

Devil Dinosaur!
  10:38pm
Danne D:

*imagines what a cheri radio show would sound like*

I imagine it would include about 50 dedications to a certain Mr. Davies :D
  10:52pm
radio free cheri format:

all requests and dedications, no time left over for actual music
  11:00pm
cheri:

danne--will you be dressing up this sunday?? i will be,,,i'll be princess fiona
  11:03pm
inquiring minds:

is princess fiona pre or post op?
  11:04pm
Danne D:

I'm not really a big dress up on halloween guy, cheri :( I'm usually working as it's right before election day. I will have halloween colors on though as my Bengals will be playing that day :)

Curious what the most frequent/favorite halloween costumes are amongst the posters here :)

I have 2 memories myself:
1) In 1st grade I dressed as the Fonz which led my dad to doing the ayyyyyyyyy thing me to me like a billion times to my consternation and calling me Fotz (sic) way too much

2) The most frequent costume was one that is rather politically incorrect these days and be characterized with the 3-letter phrase "bum"
  11:06pm

  11:11pm
inquiring minds:

i cant tell if "she's" pre or post op, though :-P we need one of those fullbody airport scanners
  11:12pm
Danne D:

Um, I think "she's" a character from a cartoon movie, im.
  11:13pm
cheri:

thank you danne=),,,will you play that glass bottle tune as a small favor to me evan???
  11:13pm
inquiring minds:

  11:13pm
Joe:

  11:14pm
Danne D:

It's like pokemon, Joe. Gotta catch 'em all :)

  11:17pm
Joe:

  11:17pm
cheri:

if anybody's interested "princess fiona" is from the "SHREK" movies,,
  11:18pm
Danne D:

Joe:

funny Pujol story:

I bought their "Live at Third Man Records" 12" EP from them when they were in town last week for 10 dollars.

I saw it at the record fair for 150 dollars.

Along with seeing the new Tame Impala LP for over 200 dollars online, I've decided I've picked a really terrible time to start buying vinyl.
