Artist Track Comments
Big Guitars from Texas  Chainsaw   Favoriting I almost never play this one-- and it skipped...
Big Guitars from Texas  Bulldoggin' Boogie   Favoriting ...so back to one of the regular theme tunes.
John McLaughlin  Don't Let the Dragon Eat Your Mother   Favoriting Should I use this to name the show? Psychedelic jazz guitar for Halloween.
Robert Palmer  Parade of the Obliterators   Favoriting Thanks to KBC for this one!
Roky Erickson & the Nervebreakers  I Walked with a Headhunter   Favoriting He says zombie but the cover says different. Either way it's crazy texas rock & roll, recorded live in Dallas 1979.
Screamin' Jay Hawkins  Little Demon   Favoriting This is from his 1991 album-- "Cow Fingers & Mosquito Pie"-- on Epic/Legacy. A man for the season.
Willie Dixon  I Ain't Superstitious   Favoriting Not sure when this one was written-- the CD was (re)issued in 1993-- but this guy is amazing. I saw him before he died; he was a class act. No Wolf but wrote the best blues ever.
Howlin' Wolf  Evil   Favoriting This version is from a 2-record album ("Chester Burnett aka Howlin' Wolf") on Chess-- every song is killer. And he wrote this one, not Willie Dixon.
The Psychedelic Aliens  Blogonyobi Wo Atale   Favoriting Evil R&R from Ghana, from the 70s.

Music behind DJ:
Psychedelic Aliens

Hijacking   Favoriting

Sam Sacks  That Old Black Magic   Favoriting Terrible, just terrible. But charmingly so.
Spike Jones  That Old Black Magic   Favoriting Okay, I've been hanging out with KBC too much!
Esquivel  That Old Black Magic   Favoriting Just one more. I promise. I know, I should talk over this but you have to admit, it's classy lounge schmaltz.
Stan Freberg  St. George and the Dragon   Favoriting The devil made me do it.
Lee "Scratch" Perry  Scary Politicians   Favoriting How appropriate-- not Halloween, Election Day. Scary politicians. New CD: "Revelation' (MEGW, 2010)
Manu Chao  Politik Kills   Favoriting From his 2007 CD: "La Radiolina"

Music behind DJ:
Stan Getz

Witchdoctor   Favoriting

Moise & Alida Viator  Wangateur (Fortune Teller)   Favoriting When this was recorded, about 10 years ago, Moise was in college (Pre-Med at LSU) and his sister Alida, the fiddle player, was in high school.
Wynton Marsalis  Billy Goat Stomp   Favoriting Whatever else you may think of him, few work as hard to keep that old rootsy jazz alive as he does. From "My Jelly Lord"-- tribute to Jelly Roll Morton-- w/ Eric Lewis on piano.
Jerry Lee Lewis  Halleluiah I Love Her So   Favoriting I have this on a vinyl double album on Pickwick.
Ozomatli w/ David Hidalgo  Aqui No Sera   Favoriting A rare ballad from these L.A. rockers. Muy dulce!
Sandy Nelson  Happenings Ten Years Time Ago   Favoriting This jazz drummer did some interesting things with R&R songs, like this Yardbirds classic.
Chubby Checker w/ Dee Dee Sharp  Slow Twistin'   Favoriting From a strange album Chubby produced-- and sometimes sings on-- with a band called Texas Radio. Seriously mediocre, although this one is cool.
Gregorz Z Ciechowa  Piejo Kury Piejo   Favoriting I guess this is a traditional Polish number, although it sound fresh and new.
La Primitifs du Futur  C'est la Goutte L'Or qui fait deborder la Valse   Favoriting A great album of French/Gypsy w/ Dominque Cravic, Robert Crumb, Fay Lovsky and more. From 1999, on Harmonia Mundi
Fay Lovsky & la Bande Dessinee  Funny Bizniz   Favoriting All the CDs we have from her are from the late 1990s; anyone know if she is still making music?
The Ting Tings  That's Not My Name   Favoriting What is this? Who played this? Eugene? Stacey? You can call me Al.
Tom Ze  O Ceu Desabou   Favoriting It says on the CD that this tune was "inspired by 'The Persians' by Aeschylus." Wonderful new stuff on Luaka Bop: "Estudando A Bossa: Nordeste Plaza" (2010)

Music behind DJ:
Either/Orchestra

Latin Dimensions   Favoriting

Bukka White  Baby Please Don't Go   Favoriting

I've been conflicted about Manu Chao for a while, but now I think he's cool. I don't like all of his stuff, but he indirectly taught me a lot, I met a bunch of his high school classmates over the years. They probably looked down on him at the time, now they brag about the connection. Scary thing is I wouldn't have been any better.
  6:13pm
steve krinsky:

Hey, Fred, I'm curious about your thoughts. Say more-- either here or email me at stevek@wfmu.org. He did a great job producing Amadou & Miriam CD; I'd love to see him live.
  6:22pm
Tentley Bebinef:

This one ain't half bad. Where's the rest of your playlist, amigo?
  6:28pm
steve krinsky:

I useta know an old hippie with that name back in the 60s but he can't get there from here anymore.
  6:28pm
fred:

Hey Steve, I now realize how wrong my comment went. But it's right too. I'm french and oldish and have been hanging out in several scenes over the years. But I was not part of the original Sevres/Mano Negra scene.I have to make that clear. I'll get to you later, for what it's worth, which isn't much
  6:34pm
Tentley Bebinef:

Now you're talking!
  6:38pm
Tentley Bebinef:

Actually I know the Ting Tings aren't your usual playlist, but I love how this song builds. I saw them live in Boston (all 2 of them) and even an old 60's hippie like me was on the floor writhing in ecstasy. Or we were on ecstasy. Can't remember much anymore.
  6:56pm
Chip:

I'm liking this. Keep it up!
  6:58pm
Kevin:

Steve,
It seems like Manu Chao has performed every summer in NYC for the last 10 years!
He usually plays the park stages in Manhattan and Brooklyn.

I also enjoy the Amadou & Miriam album

I know many of my friends in Barcelona have had mixed experiences with MC as a person, I have enjoyed Mano Negra and MC music for some time.

I also kick myself for not going to see him perform in Chiapas Mexico in 2000. He showed up at this tiny bar and played all night
