Left to right: Copenhagen: Counter-cultural Christiania; FMU represents @ WOMEX; tombstone guitar at Assistens Kirkegård.

WOMEX is the annual worldwide world music industry expo, something like a SXSW or CMJ for world music moguls, musicians, pundits and enthusiasts. If you want to learn about new artists, new trends, new happenings in the worlds of world music, WOMEX is the place to be.

This week Rob and two fellow travelers post-mortem WOMEX 2010, held October 27-31 in Copenhagen, playing the music and sharing the scuttlebutt: Gerald Seligman, whose impressive CV includes stints as WOMEX General Director, label honcho (he launched the EMI Hemispheres imprint), music journalist and even FMU DJ; and Olivier Conan, proprietor of the esteemed Park Slope music spot Barbes and record label of the same name (which has just released its second great vintage Amazonian surf cumbia comp, Roots of Chicha 2), and bandleader of acclaimed Chicha Libre - who played a prestigious showcase at WOMEX 2010 - as well as Las Rubias del Norte.

  6:15pm julian:

welcome back Rob!
  6:24pm Your DJ:

Thanks Julian!
  7:01pm wombat:

Hi Rob - anyone ever tell you that you sound on-air uncannily like Dr. Zorba Paster from public radio's 'On Your Health with Zorba Paster'?
  7:02pm Your DJ:

I think my cold may be enhancing that association...
  7:03pm wombat:

Sorry to hear that - get well soon!
  7:45pm tinkle bear:

it was interesting to listen to you guys talking about how you didn't like how an aboriginal musician chose to present his music, how you thought his french collaborators marred the presentation of the aboriginal elements.

like it wasn't "authentic" enough for you, not "aboriginal" enough.

the musician got offended, and you guys seemed a little unclear on why.

the awkardness could have been avoided, maybe, if he'd been informed beforehand that y'all wanted him to play the part of a museum exhibit.

if aboriginal musicians want to Sting it up, so what? how is it your
business to tell them that's not an authentic "aboriginal" aesthetic aim?
  7:56pm Your DJ:

Hi Tinkle Bear - I don't think I meant it to come off that way - personally I don't believe in meddling with what musicians want to do (but also I'm not a producer so I don't have to worry about making money!). I'm certainly not into the "museum exhibit" thing though - I am not a purist, and also artists should do what they want in my opinion, absolutely.
  8:23pm sidekick:

not a wife!
  12:26am Gerald:

To Tinkle Bear: the thing to keep in mind was that, Grant, the indigenous performer, was backed by -- and arranged by -- a bunch of Sting loving, new age pop musicians who succeeded in literally emptying the concert hall. This wasn't Grant's position, it was his musical director's. My point was that Grant should have trusted his own traditions more, a point I happily stand behind.
