Listener comments!

  9:08pm
dave:

it takes a real genius to make fleetwood mac funky enough to follow "flash light", and trailmix is that genius.
  9:12pm
efd:

I concur!
  9:16pm
Snack Time:

My sandwich: PB and Jam, thanks.
  9:17pm
Joe:

hmm so it seems norman greenbaum did other things than that other song. strangely good things. will investigate.
  9:19pm
G:

Check out his "Canned Ham", a classic of c. 1970 whimsy. Iit was his minor-hit follow-up to "Spirit in the Sky"
  9:19pm
Danne D:

Hi Evan :) Hi Funk Fans :)
Awesome start to the show!
Alas I am dealing with setting up a new laptop I had to buy :( so this may be my only comment. Here's to a great show, Evan :) I shall stay tuned.
  9:20pm
Danne's Lap:

It's getting kind of warm. Move that thing.
  9:28pm
Neu Waveo Daveo:

What up Funk!
  9:34pm
Joe:

just bought that Idle Times LP based on that song alone. I love you, Hozac records. I may even buy your limited edition t-shirt.
  9:36pm
Neu Waveo Daveo:

Every hero needs a theme song....

  10:04pm
efd:

Joe, will you please answer Neu Waveo Daveo's question (even though he already pretty much answered it himself)?
  10:09pm
Neu Waveo Daveo:

t'was rhetorical. I've already ack'd that request....

I'll sit back, shut up and enjoy now....
  10:09pm
Joe:

It is indeed the Lordz of Brooklyn, from their track "Saturday Night Fever", circa 1995. The beat itself is a looped sample of the opening guitar solo of "American Woman" by The Guess Who.

It's also fun to listen to whilst making up your own words about what you're doing while you're listening to it.
  10:10pm
cheri:

i'm just taking time out of my busy schedule just to say happy holidays to my friends evan & danne,,,btw how was your thanxgiving guys??? ohhh one more thing ,,danne what was the worst xmas gift you ever got??
  10:11pm
seang:

  10:11pm
dave:

i think this is the first dinosaur cover i've ever heard. good thing it's a good 'un, i might be spoiled for life.
  10:13pm
Joe:

I just today burned the whole years worth of covers to CD and listened to it in my car during my commute. It's faaaaaaaaaaaaan-tastic.
  10:13pm
Neu Waveo Daveo:

Yeah Baby!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rCvtIdLxu1Y

The Guess Who riff was discernible. Wasnt 100% sure if it was LoB, Bomb Squad...

SHAZAM!
  10:22pm
Joe B:

Everybody - don't miss the Sights next week - they are fantastic live!
  10:31pm
Aharon:

And a happy Hanuka to you, Evan and "F(l)unk"ies.
  10:33pm
cheri:

  10:34pm
Listener Pete:

EFD:

Just to let you know, Bare Wires posted four (4) new songs from their new record called "Cheap Perfume" out on their MySpace page. Don't know the release date yet
  10:35pm
efd:

speaking of Han(n)uka(h), who wants to check Twitter and tell me who opened for Yo La Tengo at Maxwell's tonight?
  10:37pm
Joe:

M. Ward and Todd Barry.

speaking of the Upper Crust, EFD, whats your opinion on this Professor Elemental guy? He's basically taking the Upper Crust's shtick and flipping it into nerdcore rap.
  10:41pm
Holly in NC:

Happy Hanukkah, Evan!

Awesome show - trying to balance listening to you & following the Duke-Michigan State game, head exploding! ;-)
  10:43pm
efd:

Thanks Joe - I'm not familiar with Prof. Elemental, sounds like something I need to look into.

Hi Holly, thanks for making the effort! :)

Pete, thanks, I'll check out those tracks this week.
  10:47pm
G:

Prof Elemental has been on Irwin's playlist for the last couple of weeks....
  10:51pm
Holly in NC:

So....the festive candy purchases I've made exhibit 4 different spellings of the holiday that commenced this evening. Is there a definitive 'correct' spelling that us gentiles should use?
  10:56pm
G:

No matter how you spell it, some willl say you're wrong. Just accept that and be happy?!?!
  11:00pm
another gentile:

חנוכה or חֲנֻכָּה‎
  11:01pm

Listener #107124:

This Diamondsnake tune is the second good AC/DC knockoff band played tonight, but more importantly, that lyric is far more frightening than any AC/DC lyric.
  11:29pm
bannaner:

yeah
  11:31pm
efd:

What up, bannaner?!

107124, I could probably do a whole show of AC/DC knockoffs, and love every minute of it. Who's ready for some Rhino Bucket?
  11:32pm
Joe B:

Conspiracy of Owls - one of the year's best!
  11:32pm
john:

Hey Evan! Digging the new Waistcoats...the Great Lost 21st Century Dutch Concept Album...
  11:32pm
efd:

Joe B.. - yes, absolutely!!

John, I know - I was tempted to let the whole side play through!
  11:33pm
Joe B:

I didn't even know the Waistcoats were still around.
  11:38pm
efd:

I know, me either!

Meanwhile, I figured one good concept deserves another...
  11:39pm
cheri:

efd--am i forgiving?? i'm just weak,,i could'nt stay away
  11:40pm
efd:

don't sweat it, cheri.
  11:42pm
Joe:

this is absolutely progtastic. Where did you find this?!
  11:44pm
efd:

I'm pretty sure I got this specific copy at Jerry's in Pittsburgh. I don't think it's that rare - the whole thing is kind of legendary. '70s record company excess at its finest.
  11:44pm
Joe:

OMG THATS JUSTIN HAYWARD
  11:45pm
efd:

No, that's Richard Burton.

But Justin Hayward is coming right up!
  11:45pm
Joe:

augh no it's not. stupid internet.
  11:49pm
Chris:

A groovy War of the Worlds?! I feel like I should have slipped and cracked my head against a sink to hear such a thing!
  11:50pm
Danne D:

aha Justin Hayward...no wonder it sounds like the Moodys :)
cannot read messages (still on the so-called smart phone) but wanted to pop in to thank you Evan for a great show. Until next week Funk Fans :) Hi/bye to all you regulars and irregulars too :)
  11:50pm
John:

Wow, good stuff. I realize I heard this as a kid but I had forgotten all about it ... awesome.
  11:51pm
efd:

you should see the lyric book. My favorite part is:

Martians: Ulla!
  11:52pm
Joe:

wow. Im buying a copy of this. It's going right next to my copy of Bo Hansen's Music Inspired by Lord of the Rings.
  11:53pm
efd:

I should open up a record store just to sell you things I play on my show. I would have made two sales tonight!
  11:54pm
efd:

oh man, I was totally going to cut it at the end of that last bit of narration, but the singing came in too quickly! I think we're stuck with it for a little longer.
  11:55pm
efd:

Who knew when I started this 20 minutes ago that I'd be in danger of running into Noah's show?!
  11:55pm
G:

Small world note: Rick Wakeman got Hayward to sing a track on Return to the Center of the Earth (late 90s, but a followup to the scifi prog Journey to the Center of the Earth from 72 or so that had blazed the path for the prog War of the Worlds from 78)
  11:56pm
Joe:

SUCH IS THE POWER OF PROG
  11:56pm
baron oshima:

"The chances of anything coming from Mars are a million to one he said...But still they came"
  11:58pm
Joe:

faaaaantastic
  11:59pm
john:

Whole decade of the '80s you couldn't go to a record store without tripping over half a dozen on these in the cut-out bin. Oh, and it looks like there are two of me here. You can tell who the Bizarro me is due to his love of prog.
  11:59pm
Danne D:

final score: Mars 1 Earth 0.

We'll be right back with the happy recap...
  12:00am
G:

But did Mars beat the spread?
  12:01am
Joe:

There's also a SEVEN CD version of that album.
  12:05am
G:

7 CD version, no kidding:
