Huun Huur Tu (L), members of Sibirskaya Vechora.

This winter has felt a bit like Siberia in Jersey City - so it's the perfect time for what may be a New Jersey radio first: a twin bill of live sets by bands from Siberia.

We kick it off with the first and still greatest traditional band from Tuva in southern Siberia, Huun Huur Tu. The tireless overtone-singing spike-fiddle-wielding marvels serenade us in-studio midway through a winter North American tour that includes a gig at Joe's Pub in NY on Saturday January 29. (Also check out their new cd, Ancestors Call on World Village Records.) Special thanks to our illustrious engineer Jason Sigal and to Bruce Sherman from Hudson River Performing Arts Center, who presented Huun Huur Tu's recent free concert at the UBS Atrium, Lincoln Harbor (and also present free concerts on the waterfront at Lincoln Harbor during the summer).

And later in the show Sibirskaya Vechora, an award-winning ensemble from the Krasnoyarsk region of central Siberia, steps up to the mics. The group, dedicated to researching and preserving regional traditions, performs traditional songs from Siberia and other parts of Russia. Special thanks to CEC Artslink.

Hear Sibirskaya Vechora with their full (as opposed to smaller touring) ensemble, recorded during their ethnomusicological journeys in Siberia: Their cd Muziki, Viryazukhi Moi is in the Free Music Archive: http://freemusicarchive.org/music/Sibirskaya_Vechora/Muziki_Viryazukhi_Moiu
