Jim and "Bill" Is the pecker on a woodpecker considered a bill?
1:36pm
Rob:
Yes, it is a bill.
1:36pm
ben drinken:
no I guess it's a beak. ducks have bills
1:39pm
Rob:
But it's called "Ivory-billed Woodpecker" so it is a bill.
1:42pm
ben drinken:
oh, yeah. the Ivory Billed. Chickens have beaks. and other birds have beaks. wonder what determines a bill or a beak?
1:44pm
Rob:
Beaks and bills are the same on a bird. In the financial world, beaks and bills are different.
1:45pm
Jack:
Octopi and squid have beaks, called a "radula"
1:46pm
Rob:
a few birds with "bill" in the name: Red-billed Pigeon and Pale-billed Woodpecker come to mind immediately. There are also grosbeaks.
1:47pm
ben drinken:
answers dot com says beaks can be used for anything from birds to turtles to dinosaurs. but bills are only for birds. but beaks of course can be applied to birds as well since it is a general term about all beaks in species. yes. squid have beaks. but they have a bill when you order calamari at a restaurant.
1:48pm
Rob:
Calamari in a restaurant is quite delicious and usually fits the bill when I'm hungry.
