Acclaimed gaita - bagpipe - player Cristina Pato, from Galicia in northwest Spain, started her career by making history: While still just a teenager, she was the first female Galician piper (gaitera) ever to release a solo cd. Pato now has three of her own cds out and has collaborated on many others, including an ongoing recording (and touring) gig with Yo Yo Ma's Silk Road Ensemble. The ground-breaking gaitera gives us a taste of her solo playing, and she'll also introduce us to her stylistically eclectic new cd, The Galician Connection.
Cristina's next area performances feature new work with the Maya Trio: A free daytime (12:30 pm) concert Thursday April 21 as part of the HRPAC series at the UBS Atrium at Lincoln Harbor, 1000 Harbor Blvd, Weehawken NJ (series info:http://hrpac.org/calendar.htm); and Thursday April 28th at 8 pm at Judson Church, 55 Washington Square South in Manhattan (info here).
And she'll be touring in North America this spring as a member of the Silk Road Ensemble. There are concerts in Texas, California and Vancouver BC in March and April, plus a date at NJPAC in Newark NJ on June 4. Tour info here.

Libyan rapper. “Khalas Mixtape Vol. 1 is a compilation of songs created by North African hip hop artists from Egypt, Libya, Tunisia and Algeria who have emerged as voices of recent uprisings and calls for protest. Mish B3eed, or ‘Not far,’ refers to the sense of solidarity that these youth feel across borders, the similarities of their causes and the oppressors they face, their physical proximity and the sense that our ultimate goal is within sight. Each song describes the unique circumstances of each artist’s country, carrying with it the subtleties of local dialects, but also highlights the extraordinary similarities of their struggles.” Download it here.
