Street interviews, listener call-ins, vinyl gluttery, sporadic normalcy, original floperas and fiktion, blatant talking over songs, politix, tenderness, and a vague undercurrent of angst. Right up your alley!

Listener comments!

  6:05pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hi to Clay and all DJs present!
Also to those not in the vicinity!
  6:05pm
Suggestion Box:

Someone close Fabio's comments, they are still chatting there lol
  6:07pm
Danne D:

Oooh, maybe we can just leave the trolls in there and then they won't be here ;)
  6:08pm
Desp:

It's mostly Robert, who's saddened by Andy getting "forced" to get a nipple piercing.
  6:08pm
Mary Wing:

@Danne: :-D
  6:08pm
Suggestion Box:

True dat. And that one Clay H---r
  6:08pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Danne: Garbage men! Yeah, seal that other playlist shut and throw it on the truck! :)
  6:09pm
Danne D:

I told the haters to stay over there and that there's more to come :D So maybe they'll not come over here.

Hi Mary Wing!
LOL Matt :)
  6:09pm
Desp:

ERRBUDY SHUT UP
  6:09pm
Matt from Springfield:

Yeah, you had the 18-49 demo--until they decided to become the 50-64 demo! LOL
  6:11pm
Greg from VA:

I am going to really miss Clay, oh those interviews on the street and not being able to hear Foghat anymore, geez, an era is ending!
  6:11pm
Danne D:

LOL - This is where all the Julie pledges come in for those who overslept ;) If you listen to Julie on the archives and like her show pledge now!!!! 800-989-9368. Clay will understand.

I went to the University of Illinois - it is NOT a suburb of Chicago - 2 hours south.
  6:11pm
BSI:

having both comment boards up at the same time... it's like watching a demented ant-farm while completely ripped on Bovril.
  6:11pm
Danne D:

Btw Hugh Hefner went to the University of Illinois
  6:12pm
Danne D:

I'll go tend to the haters, BSI, thanks for the reminder :)
  6:13pm
BSI:

....better than television!
  6:14pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Danne: Jeez, Robert is more neurotic than Clay!

Pledge and support the JUSTLY neurotic Clay!
1 800 989 9368!
  6:15pm
fred:

If you like Julie: pledge!
If you like Clay: pledge!
If you like both: pledge!
If you like neither: pledge!
  6:15pm
Dale from North Dakota:

Wouldn't it be more logical for the controlling powers that be to encourage marijuana use?
  6:15pm
Danne D:

You are right BSI, this dueling boards deal is kinda fun. Have to do this again when Give the Drummer Radio is on at the same time as something else.
  6:16pm
Matt from Springfield:

That's some logic we can all agree with Fred!
  6:16pm
Danne D:

Is Clay a Scorpio?
  6:16pm
kham:

5 lb bag of purina.
  6:18pm
Danne D:

I remember that "The Best of Times" was supposed to be the theme for our graduation and they found some lame-ass choral song with the same title and used that instead.
  6:18pm
kham:

Eastern Mennonite College is my dad's alma mater, no lie. When you found that in a thrift shop in Brooklyn I fell off my chair.
  6:19pm
Danne D:

John Brown's body is a-moldering in the ground. Classic indeed.
  6:20pm
Matt from Springfield:

This IS a great promo, wish they had Time Life style infomercials with this on.

@Clay: One question, now that we got your attention: any reason why your voiceovers on prerecorded segments sounds like you're operating behind enemy lines? Is this a clandestine broadcast? Voice of Classic Rock Freedom?
  6:21pm
Matt from Springfield:

@kham: Eastern Mennonite from Harrisonburg!
My Dad went to James Madison U. (then Madison College), was actually a townie for a few years before attending.
  6:23pm
kham:

@Matt - Springfield IL?
@Clay - I do miss Colonel Carl....
  6:23pm
blues traveler:

Hi from blues traveler!
  6:25pm
Matt from Springfield:

Springfield, Virginia
Do you hail from the Land of Lincoln, kham?

And yes Clay, I KNOW Styx, Dan Fogelberg, and probably tons of other musicians hail from IL as well!
  6:27pm
kham:

from CHAMBANA / Champaign-Urbana / Shampoo-Banana. but yep I know JMU too.
  6:27pm
Danne D:

That sounds like a skinny fabio leg.
  6:28pm
kham:

obamaaaaaaaa!
  6:28pm
Matt from Springfield:

Yeeech! Clay's Injury Empathizing Service!
Don't let this valuable community service go away--Pledge!
  6:29pm
Danne D:

Kham :) You're a townie? Last was in Chambana in '06 I think. I'm sure the bars and pizza places that are popular have all turned over (outside of Kam's the frat bar maybe not that I care).
  6:29pm
david:

how about, "I don't know?"
  6:29pm
chris:

where else can you get radio like this, people! no where! pledge now, pledge often! this is amazing radio!
  6:29pm
Robert:

Danne, you never heard of the Chi. Circle campus?
  6:31pm
Matt from Springfield:

@kham: Urbana-Champaign, I was just looking up that because I recall some labs located there.

They are the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA), and the Center for the Simulation of Advanced Rockets.
  6:32pm
david:

yeah, the crow story was good.
  6:32pm
kham:

yes we're the home of KAMS and also the John Philip Sousa Archive
  6:34pm
Matt from Springfield:

I like those street interviews, regardless of how strong they can get; that person has strong opinions and was probably waiting to explain it--you give them voice.

Even the really passionate ones like the Veterans charity and abused Irish guy...I DARE anyone to find radio nowadays even remotely as compelling and REAL! Support FMU!
  6:35pm
Robert:

I knew of U. of I.'s preeminence in supercomputers and networks for decades, but the advanced rocket simulation's news to me, thanks.

Well, as long as we're here, anyone know who on The Dusty Show used to do the voice that was like Jim Backus with a touch of maybe June Foray? Was that Clay too?
  6:36pm
kham:

the rocket simulation lab is all made of Macintosh computers I hear - seriously.
  6:37pm
Danne D:

Sure I have Robert, but the original message was about Champaign, not specifically the U of I (i.e. UIUC) as compared to UIC.

UIUC is a kick ass school btw :)

@kham - why did John Philip Sousa hate his cymbal players so much. I did concert band there and always seem to get that part and it was brutal (mainly cuz I don't have guns like say, Bryce)
  6:37pm
Matt from Springfield:

@kham: Nice. I once read that Steven Wright once recorded a bunch of promos for UIUC student radio, was trying to find that.now.
  6:38pm
Danne D:

Btw, I answered you on the other playlist Robert, I feel kinda abandoned over there :)

Is Mabel's still there Kham? I saw Cheap Trick there when I was in school there (in the 90s not the 70s)
  6:40pm
Danne D:

Dang the other board closed :(
Now I'll have to comment only half as much :(
  6:40pm
Robert:

Matt, I wouldn't characterize my concern as neurotic, although I may be that in other ways, it's more sentimental. It also bothers me when Andy B. has a child on the phone and jokes about rape.
  6:41pm
kham:

no more mabels :( but Parasol Records is still kickin. And we have REO Speedwagon way in Champaign by the Highdive!
  6:41pm
Robert:

Danne, couldn't you read-write access it, if you really wanted to, by subtracting one from the URL to this one?
  6:41pm
Matt from Springfield:

Michaela's Navy??!!
GAWD, your references go back far, and creatively!
  6:42pm
Danne D:

oh no 8( I'm sad to hear about Mabel's.

(I know Robert as far as the other board goes, but it ain't the same with the neat shifty thing as the comments zoom down the page)
  6:43pm
Suggestion Box:

You can still comment on a closed board (though why?), by using the comments box left available right at the bottom of most comment boards after they are closed.
  6:43pm
Danne D:

I worked about 6 blocks from the Space Needle once upon a time.
  6:44pm
Danne D:

I know Suggestion Box :) And I've been known to do it, but it's a rare occasion. It's not as in the moment as an open board :)

Sounds like Julie is in a happy mode today :)
  6:44pm
Robert:

I'm trying to remember the name of the place I ate pizza in my one night in Champaign-Urbana in 1980. I stopped there on the way to visiting a friend at SIU Carbondale, after I'd been living in Chi. as a student at UHS/CMS.
  6:44pm
Danne D:

I think the boards are kept open for the benefit of archive listeners who may have questions (as one example)
  6:45pm
Danne D:

Garcia's maybe, Robert?
  6:46pm
david:

fabio should eat that tastykake for that Y3K, if you think about it.
  6:46pm
Danne D:

Could be Giordano's maybe.

I wasn't there for another 8 years so it's totally possible it's a place I don't know.
  6:46pm
Matt from Springfield:

DEMS FIGHTIN' WORDS!
Don't alienate PA pledgers, Fabio!
  6:46pm
Robert:

Let's just say it was Garcia's Maybe. Funny name for an establishment.
  6:46pm
Danne D:

I meant Papa Del's not Giordanos
  6:46pm
Danne D:

Garcia's - home of the flying tomato brothers and individual slices in square shapes.
  6:47pm
Robert:

Everyone knows Papa Del's not Giordanos.
  6:48pm
Danne D:

Giordano's vs Gino's East is the Chicago debate.
  6:48pm
jeff Brown:

sorry have to go now good luck with the marathon cya next week clay
  6:49pm
Robert:

Danne, that was the weird thing about Chicagoland in the 1970s -- they never heard of pizza slices, eaten with the hands. Except for a place on Lincoln Ave., pizza everywhere was cut in squares and eaten with a knife and fork. I asked in a bar in Cicero if they could cut it pie-like, and she told me, nah, it'd never work.
  6:49pm
kham:

garcias is the tomato guys, papa dels is good but too $$$! by all good luck with the marathon all!
  6:51pm
Robert:

That's a different Robert. I haven't donated since I've been broke, which is too long a time now. And in the good times when I did donate, in the long run they might've lost money on me via the LCD mailings that kept coming.
  6:52pm
Danne D:

Right you are kham - Papa Del's was strictly special occasions only.

Usually it was whatever's cheapest. In my era that was Pizza World for a time and then by Senior Year Grog's - Home of Mold
  6:53pm
Matt from Springfield:

Your storytelling (and writing and producing) is excellent--another thing FMU provides that I wish there was more of!
I was looking at your Archives--it was titled "Parasite"--that was FABULOUS! Like a modernized Twilight Zone episode! Keep it goin', Clay!
  6:54pm
Robert:

There was a place in Chicago named "New York Pizza -- World's Worst Pizza". Imagine Chicago's collectively being so chauvinist about their style of pizza that one place would throw itself on the sword by advertising like that.
  6:57pm
Robert:

What Chi. pizza DID have going for it was variety. Not quality, though, not really. Their thick crust pizza was only slightly more thickly crusted than avg. NY neapolitan pie, much thinner than Sicilian, and their thin crust pizza was so thin you could understand why they couldn't eat it by the slice and needed a knife and fork.
  6:57pm
Danne D:

I totally believe that Robert. Frankly I just see Chicago Pizza and New York Pizza as two completely different substances and thus I don't sweat all the debate.
  6:59pm
Danne D:

They franchised out a Gino's East on Route 17 in Paramus and it failed pretty quickly (over a decade ago now). They couldn't really translate the graffiti everywhere concept I guess (graffiti wall was just kinda lame). It's a Hooter's now.
  7:00pm
Danne D:

Anyhow, keep on pledging everyone :)
Even a small pledge to show that the station means something to you means a lot to everyone at the station. Give what ya can but please do give :)

Good night all :)
  7:00pm
Robert:

True. And there are types of pizza that don't even seem to register here in the USA. Ever have pizza rustica? It's sort of a bread baked with all kinds of stuff in it. I had that made once by a lady I knew who was from Sicily, but suppsedly it's a northern dish.
  7:00pm
Matt from Springfield:

Thanks Clay and all the DJs and pledgers! You got a lot of support!

G'night all!
  7:00pm
Danne D:

Hooters not Hooter's to all the grammar police.
  7:01pm
Danne D:

Not a clue Robert :) anyhow I really am gone now :) *poof*
  7:01pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Danne: Ike's not here, you don't need to leave "bait" today :)
  7:06pm
Robert:

Just to affirm for the record, I meant I agree with Danne that Chi. & NY-NJ pizza styles are incommensurate and a matter of taste. Chi. deep dish is basically a casserole. NY-NJ pizza fits better the way pizza is served in Italy, as an appetizer, in that you can have a slice as a snack, albeit a big snack the way they are here.
  9:47pm
Clay Pigeon:

Thank you very much for your support everyone, sincerely. It was a lot of fun being on with Fabio, Julie, Monica and the volunteers today. I look forward to new shows and more good times in the days ahead. It is a real honor to be on WFMU and have such an intelligent, fun and open-minded audience. Take care and ... always remember.
  3:56pm
Eddie Gein:

LOVE THE SHOW CLAY VERY MUCH. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK. ENJOY LISTENING WHILEST DOING MY WORK IN THE GRAVEYARD.
