Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

Joe Morello (1928-2011):

Technique is only a means to an end. For technique alone—just to see how fast
you can play so you can machine-gun everybody to death—that doesn’t make
any sense. Technique is only good if you can use it musically.”

Please behave, all you whack jobs.

Please misbehave, Senor Chusid.
  3:05pm
Looms:

Is it the marathon hangover, or is Lee Morgan going wild again?
  3:07pm
AM Listener:

I stopped listening to this insurance ad about two years ago. It sounds different when you listen to it.
  3:08pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

Fearless, and the sun comes out. Nice job, Irwin!
  3:11pm
ginger tim:

Is that *the* Dan Tullis? We are not worthy!
  3:12pm
v k:

follow this up with full version of Meddle by PF
  3:12pm
Looms:

Oh, Morello was the drummer who made the beat on Take Five... R.I.P.
  3:13pm
AM Listener:

7SD upcoming already? That shift flew by.
  3:13pm
Matt from Springfield:

Afternoon everyone.

Why are you ruining perfectly good Lee Morgan and Mary Lou Lord with this low bitrate insurance ad?? Kenny G is really you--I knew it!!
  3:13pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

I have a drum video w Morello on it, with all these high-tech metal type players, and he kicks their collective ASS
  3:16pm
Matt from Springfield:

@DCE: Those old jazz drummers really could kick collective ass. I don't know if you've ever watched "Freaks and Geeks", but a young Jason Segal (the Apatow one, not FMU's) is raving about Rush drummer Neil Peart, and is floored when his friend's dad (played by Joe Flaherty) plays him Gene Krupa for contrast.
  3:18pm
Matt from Springfield:

Oooh! "Things We Said Today"! I'm a fan of Beatles auf Deutsch, and I've never heard this one. Wasn't Klaus the guy who did "Getting Better" in German?
  3:19pm
Board Foster Parent:

OK, I accept some blame. I'll be more careful next time :-P

("Please misbehave, Senor Chusid.")
  3:20pm
Radioman:

Das ist ja deutsch. Grüße aus Good Old Europe, Germany. :-)
  3:21pm
still b/p:

Just learned of Owsley's death. Any send-off songs?
  3:22pm
Matt from Springfield:

Ja, finde ich das. "Es Wird Schoen Besser" aus Die Fanklubplatte (fan club record). Irwin spielt es an 22. Sep 2010. Ich heiße seine Musik, "Exzentrischmusik"!

Grüß dich, Radioman!
  3:24pm
Matt from Springfield:

That's funny, because before Klaus came on I was just about to say Irwin seems to have taken some brown acid he found at the bottom of an old shoebox.
  3:25pm
Board Foster Parent:

Time for 11 months of fundlowering.
  3:25pm
Looms:

Es ist angenäm deutsch hier zu sprechen, für einmal.
  3:26pm
T.W.:

Ahh, Electric Shoebox Acid Test.
  3:26pm
v k:

oh Dave Brubeck's drummer passed away? RIP. I saw the Quartette in Morristown, NJ circa. 2007 - drummer did a solo lead in to Take 5 - i was blown away by drummer's ability to carry that tune alone - wonderful jazz concert
  3:35pm
Hugh:

Irwin!
Great performance on the Sinfonia! Just watched Steve Martin & Bernadette. You & Beth hit it, right on! Man, you sure can wear a Fedora! Didja see the NY Times article on fedoras last week?
  3:36pm
minnesota jeff:

Renember every body: make sure you'll use all the typo"s you can do because irwin corrects comments a made by a commentator.
  3:38pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Hugh: Irwin is the fedora man, whenever I see him in one, he wears it like a pro.
  3:40pm
Hugh:

Only pros CAN wear a Fedora!

Thanks, ?. Notladj seems to be the official photographer of FMU events, I've seen his/her photos on Flickr before.

And !, I agree!
  3:49pm
Matt from Springfield:

John Dalton.
He has a WFMU email, anyone know him?
  3:50pm
minnesota jeff:

Wasn't John Dalton also the guy who set up all the Ustream cameras?
  3:52pm
Matt from Springfield:

Perhaps John Dalton was one of the many tech people thanked over the course of the Marathon. I like the visual element UStream cameras have provided this year, kudos to John and whoever else set those cameras up!
  3:53pm
Aharon:

Once Blue is so underrated. Especially since its members went on to become Mr. Boredom and Ms. Mitchell/Nicks. Their album was so well-recorded.
  3:54pm
Dan and Joe:

Expect to hear from our legal team.
  3:59pm
Happy Listener:

Thanks for the heads-up on Joe Morello, great quote, good show.
  3:59pm
Handsome Harry:

Is Joe Morello giving me the finger?
  4:01pm
Matt from Springfield:

What the hell does Dan Tullis and Joe Clark have to do with a Joe Morello tribute? Irwin, get out of that shoebox!! You're already actin' crazy enough today!
  4:02pm
Mike East:

I agree with the above, Irwin. Song choice was tops and well executed. I liked Joe Belock's Thermos reference after. Someone should do that song next year...though it seems incomplete.

Did Moamar pledge? If so, did his c/c clear?
  4:08pm
Happy Listener:

I wonder if Irwin has sampled Magnetic Fields' entire ouvre, there are a ton of great tracks on "The Wayward Bus/Distant Plastic Trees", "Charm of the Highway Strip", and "Get Lost" that I haven't heard on this show yet. It was nice to hear tracks from the "House of Tomorrow" EP, however.
  4:09pm
Charile Sheen:

If it doesn't involve ME, it ain't newsworthy, losers.
  4:10pm
Barry:

At least I got my hoops picks lined up, and some golf scheduled before it gets chilly again. Life is good.
  4:10pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Irwin: Send in the Marines for domestic unemployment. They could invade Madison, NJ and give Andy Breckman a job at gunpoint.
  4:10pm
Happy Listener:

Yawning @ Charlie Sheen and his dry, colourless Tiger Blood problem.
  4:11pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hey, how come the station wound up $45k short of $1.2 million, when your show raked in over $4 million? Did Ken "lose" some of that during his "second count" at his new lakefront house annex? Maybe the rest of it is stuffed in that recliner! Take a penknife to the cushion!

  4:24pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Chuck: Only if you've pissed on those too!
Unless of course I'm not judged worthy enough for your healing piss. I will take the 529-part course on your "Better Martial Arts through Piss Sushi".

  4:45pm

@anonyparty: Canadian geese are one of our finest exports to the US, and are sophisticated enough to appreciate Moondog. Expect the unexpected.

We ARE legumes!
  5:05pm
Dennis Diken:

I admire Joe’s prodigious technique but more than that, I love the lyrical quality in his drumming . When I saw him live several times I laughed out loud at some of his fills. It was as if he was telling jokes on the drums! He was the consummate musician and entertainer, with so much humanity in his playing.
  5:05pm
Matt from Springfield:

Peanuts: same family as beans (Fabaceae), but a cousin to beans, not a sibling, if that clears things up.

Whew, Joe will be missed! That is fantastic!
  5:05pm
Carmichael:

I thought yams are legumes.

Jack:

Hey Irwin!

Ah...listening to your show makes homework much more bearable!
  5:35pm
Dan and Joel:

Actually, to be way too honest we had totally shitty agents and signed away upfront all rights beyond a flat performance fee. If only we'd taken out agent insurance. :-( :-( Now we keep antidepressants in a candy dish on the coffee table and chainsmoke Stuyvesants. And we don't have domestic partner health coverage, even though we're a couple in RL.
