Listener comments!

  9:08pm
Joe:

"Common man" eh?
  9:09pm
john:

Hey Evan! Isn't this comp great? Still one of my favorites!
  9:12pm
randy in NC:

EFD- Chris Stamey et al are doing the Big Star Third show in NYC on 3/26 but you probably already know that. Not to be missed! http://bigstarthird.com/
  9:13pm
Danne D:

WOW!! ELP on EFD's show. Between this and Yes being featured prominently on The Best Show last night the prog rock revival is in full swing on WFMU :) Perhaps I'll hear some U.K. Soon as tribute to PGB kicking ass on the electric violin at the Hoof N Mouth :)
  9:13pm
efd:

Joe - I was playing that in honor of everyone who pledged, but in point of fact those are all UNcommon people.

John- yeah, that's a great one! Need to re-visit that, it's been a while since I've listened to the whole thing.
  9:14pm
john:

Becky just asked me who I loved more, her or Magazine. I pointed out that Howard Devoto was bald.
  9:17pm
efd:

Randy, yes, I've heard about that Big Star Third show, I'm definitely going to try to make it after yours and others' rave reviews!
  9:18pm
randy in NC:

Be there or be square! It looks like they are assembling an all star cast too.
  9:19pm
Danne D:

True fact - my first car was nicknamed the Tarkus.

another true fact - I have since then stopped giving my cars names.
  9:20pm
randy in NC:

@Danne D, I faithfully copied the Tarkus cover in pen onto my 9th grade note book...
  9:22pm
Joe:

my favorite part of Tarkus is when he beats the manticore and falls into the volcano and becomes Mega-Tarkus

"It's about the military industrial complex"

Sure dude, whatever
  9:22pm
efd:

I don't know what you people are talking about.
  9:23pm
Joe:

says the guy playing Aphrodite's Child!!!!
  9:24pm
slugluv1313:

FOUR HORSEMEN, COOL! (one of my fave songs off "666"!) thanks, Evan!
  9:25pm
Bill:

Four Horsemen sounds a lot like "Chemtrails" by blur
  9:26pm
Bill:

I mean Beck
  9:27pm
Wikipedia:

The word 'tarkus' means wisdom in Estonian Language.
  9:28pm
calzone!:

Face version o ny groove! Love the crackles!
  9:29pm
Joe:

oh it wasn't mega-tarkus it was AQUA-tarkus... my bad.
  9:30pm
calzone!:

'fave' version, EFD fans!
  9:44pm
12539:

Evan's show makes me feel like a kid in the best possible way.
  9:44pm
Aqua Tarkus:

@Joe: Don't you... forget about me...
  9:47pm
G:

There's tons of interesting neoprog and similar out there, from the last couple of decades and currently. There's just so much interesting music out there even FMU doesn't have time to get into it all.

*Reading* all the interesting stuff there is to read is even worse, trust me there...
  9:48pm
Amanda:

I like this Tours song. Hi, everyone!
  9:50pm
Euge:

Evan, you can't see, but I'm doing the twist in my living room right now.
  9:51pm
Steve L:

MORE TWISTING!!!!
  9:52pm
calzone!:

Whoa! A very rare EFD radio error! The machine is human, folks! ; )
  9:52pm
Amanda:

Yay
  9:53pm
dj empirical:

this is me tuned in.
  9:55pm
john:

Gosh, Evan, how many times did you listen to Thunder Island?
  9:57pm
Thunder Island:

We desert island disks get listened to a lot.
  9:58pm
dj empirical:

acolyte is a great word.
  10:01pm
Frisco Kid:

Just returned to my post and noticed that your first set looks like a blast! Must listen to Back in the New York Groove on archive later.
  10:01pm
efd:

john: I'd prefer not to answer that question.

Euge, sorry to interrupt the twisting party!

Hi Amanda, Steve, G. dj empirical, calzone, 12539, and all lurkers! Thanks for tuning in tonight.
  10:05pm
Joe:

MASSIVE NOISEROCK SEGUE

bravo!
  10:10pm
efd:

thanks Joe, I was pretty happy with that myself!
  10:12pm
Euge:

WHAT IS HAPPENING?!? SO MUCH NOISE. SO MUCH FUNK.
  10:13pm
Thunder Island:

It's the NoiseFunk Revolution
  10:18pm
seang:

the guitar solo break in this tune is UNREAL!
  10:24pm
Tinky Winky:

Again Again!
  10:25pm
randy in NC:

Wait, that renegades was from 1966???? I didn't know anything sounded like that in 1966...
  10:25pm
Amanda:

Can we hear it again after this?
  10:26pm
john:

Yeah, and it all sounded like that again in 1986!
  10:26pm
E.L.:

I smell a new podcast opportunity. 13 women ad infinitum.
  10:26pm
Steve L:

There are no words to express my joy.

Real radio lives. GOD I'm glad I pledged!
  10:27pm
UnblinkingEar:

13 Women, 13 times?
  10:28pm
Danne D:

@Joe a long time I go I used aquatarkus as the password for the Plato IV system at college.

G - I am curious about the interesting neoprog out there. I do remember a road trip to Montreal, well crap it was a decade ago now probably so it isn't exactly neoprog at that point but I honestly found Dream Theater to be absolute torture (that basically all the prior bands had done it already).

Now checking to see if Dream Theater is the rare band that defeats the WFMU archives and is not there.
  10:28pm
john:

That'd be 169 women and only 13 men in town.
  10:29pm
Danne D:

@Steve L, thanks for pledging :) But you can call him Evan ;o)
  10:30pm
Danne D:

Or should I say Him.
  10:30pm
Churchill:

About that emendation on the playlist to avoid a sentence-ending preposition:

This is the sort of English up with which I will not put.
  10:32pm
dj empirical:

this is not dissimilar to the Shaggs. (thats a compliment)
  10:33pm
Joe:

yeah like if the Shaggs actually had one foot in conventional time signatures

sorry, one "foot-foot"
  10:34pm
Danne D:

A rare victory in the battle to find a band (particularly one with a reasonable amount of sales) that cannot be found in the FMU archive band browser. 0 plays for Dream Theater.

Btw, it's totally a fun parlor game when your non-FMU friend names a band and you could look up how often FMU has played them. My friend brought up this band called Spot 1019 from San Francisco. 4 plays. Once each in 1990, 1995, 2006 and 2009
  10:34pm
Steve L:

Danne D: He that bringeth the noise?
  10:36pm
Danne D:

He that bringeth the funk :)
  10:36pm
Danne D:

Oh Thank Evan!
  10:40pm
Amanda:

Danne, I love Spot 1019! Are you kidding me? That song "Ringo" was sung a lot when I was in high school by me and my best friend (because we found an LP of theirs at a thrift store).

Joe -- your Shaggs pun made me actually angry with you for a minute.
  10:41pm
Carolyn:

Evan I am listening at work! Sound card has been reinstalled. I am so happy! You rule!
  10:41pm
G:

@Danne: Honestly, there's too much of it to go into here, and in any level of detail it's not board-relevant (not that that always stops people :-) -- where's youknowwho? )

Here's a quick answer, not mine exactly but something, FYI:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neo-progressive_rock

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_prog

Newer prog is much more alive in romance-language countries (Spain, Italy, S. Amer., etc.) than in the anglophone world where it originated 40 years ago.
  10:42pm
efd:

Awesome Carolyn, great to hear from you! Looking forward to your podcast/stream/whateveryou call it!
  10:42pm
Holly in NC:

I MISSED the Renegades ???!!! Twice? Drat my work, drat it!

Hi Evan :-)
  10:43pm
efd:

Hi Holly! I think that video will be a pretty good consolation prize.
  10:43pm
dave:

i was going to say that the feelies have still got it, but that song is like they're starting from scratch. it's like they're getting it all over again.

also, freaking awesome segue from the feelies to the laureates there.
  10:43pm
Carolyn:

Hi. I love that K-Holes record too.
  10:45pm
randy in NC:

The new Feelies sounds really good from what I've heard so far.
  10:52pm
Holly in NC:

The Renegades video is indeed aces - thanks Calzone!

Evan, you still need to play Richard & the Young Lions.

At some point, when you feel the urge.
  10:53pm
Danne D:

Evan runs a fun league :) Even if my team always seems to break down at the end. This year, though, the New Jersey Knuckles will not be denied!
  10:54pm
Danne D:

still wish you could play that Ted Williams song Evan :)
  11:10pm
Steve L:

Sleep will have to wait till midnight tonight.
  11:13pm
efd:

Steve, I like the way you think!

Holly, I thought I had a line on an "In" Sound LP that had R&TYL on it, which I *think* is the source for the version on What A Way To Die, since Harry Harrison is introducing them. Hoping I might still be able to grab it!
  11:16pm
Holly in NC:

Oh my gosh! I so obsess over Crystal & Rock the Shack that I forget about other good songs from Get Ready - thanks for reminding me!
  11:18pm
Danne D:

sorry had computer issues for a sec there so I didn't see replies. OF COURSE Amanda is cool enough to know from Spot 1019 (as for me I have to pull it up on the archivve). But I've long since bowed to your superior musical knowledge :) By the way, still sorting though the Hoof N Mouth pics. Just a lot to go through (and they are all pretty big size as well) and work has been crazy which has slowed things down a bit. Don't worry, Ms. Amanda, I won't forget :)
  11:20pm
Danne D:

@G - I would never throw stones regarding staying on topic in the message board :)

Newer prog sounds cooler if it's elsewhere somehow.

Hoping lots of people file into the Fantasy Baseball League. Might have to try and rope in that Skirkie character :)
  11:26pm
will:

Not sure all this music gets my 100% seal of approval, but by God am I glad you're playing it.
  11:29pm
Steve L:

Moving to NJ to make this show. Please inform my family and employer.
  11:33pm
Danne D:

LOL Steve - ya coulda at least moved before the marathon :)
  11:33pm
kiemzi:

oh dang! i didn't get home in time to rename my adopted soon to be renamed ticket giveaway segment formerly known as the midnight ticket oasis!
  11:33pm
john:

Oh wow, this show might force a second trip to the Garden State in nine days.
  11:34pm
efd:

john: DO IT!

kiemzi, not to worry - I actually didn't do a ticket giveaway tonight for a few different reasons.
  11:35pm
Danne D:

Kiemzi seems like someone who'll give it a nice name.
  11:37pm
Camel:

I'll have to head to the unemployment office next week, looks like. I'm gonna be a 99-weeker, I just know it!
  11:42pm
kiemzi:

@efd oh good. so it won't get taken away by ticket segment protective services for neglect.

@Danne D thanks! i totally will! i'm thinking the colgate-palmolive ticket giveaway? i just like the sound of it...
  11:45pm
Ticket Segment:

I'm kiemzi's tamagotchi now.
  11:45pm
Danne D:

@kiemzi there should be a .com in it. All the good named stadiums have a .com in there :)

Camel good luck! I hope your unemployment stay is short. Hang in there!
  11:45pm
Camel:

sniff!
  11:46pm
Danne D:

The "I Love the New York Yankees Ticket Oasis" :D
  11:46pm
Danne D:

Who knows maybe it'll be the "Joe Camel Ticket Oasis" :)
  11:46pm
Supremes:

Cruel and Unusual Punishment, Danne D.
  11:47pm
Supremes:

(Yankees name)
  11:48pm
Danne D:

lol - well I didn't win the bid so no worries, Supremes :)

I know that Keili is a fan of unicorns, Camel, so maybe you might find a home over there :)
  11:50pm
Danne D:

I'll have to put that SXSW showcase on while my Illini are busy screwing the pooch against UNLV
  11:50pm
Pooch:

Ouch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  11:51pm
Sportscaster:

THAT's gotta HURT.
  11:53pm
Danne D:

To close the prog-rock circle, it's kind funny but The Nice (Keith Emerson's band before ELP) has been played on FMU a ton of times.31 times by no less than 13 FMU DJs. Go figure.
  11:54pm
G:

Roots prog.
  11:55pm
G:

cf. the first Floyd and Crim albums, played here with some frequency.
  11:56pm
Danne D:

True that, G.

Wow Clay actually plays a ton of prog on his show, hadn't realized that.
  11:58pm
Danne D:

Anyhow, have a good night everyone!
Thanks for another great show as always EFD (even if I meandered a bit on the comments your excellence shone through).

Until next week!
  11:58pm
Oscar the Grouch:

I know someone who said in "Party Store" was the worst thing they've ever heard. I want to punch that person in the face.
  11:58pm
G:

He uses it a lot in his pre-produced recordings too -- mainly well known prog tracks that were all over the FM dial when he was growing up in the 70s.
  11:59pm
Joe B:

evan sorry I forgot the ticket sheets today!
  11:59pm
efd:

Thanks so much everyone, goodnight!
  11:59pm
andy in Toronto:

  5:57am
Cal Zone:

Thx for the mention, bout the Renegades vid, EFD & Holly! Yes to Richard & young lions from What a way to die comp! Harry lives!
  11:14pm
Holly:

Hey Evan - I have a brief HH In Sound interview w. Richard & the Young Lions - it starts at the end of 'Open up that Door', & it's not the What a Way to Die intro. It's on volume 5 of psychedelic promos & radio spots. :-)
  1:25pm
utzchipeater:

Better late than never. W00T! Yay!
  2:37pm
Iikka from Helsinki:

I just want to point out that that Renegades vid was produced by the Finnish Public Broadcasting Company, way back when. The Renegades were HUGE in Finland.
  3:46pm
Iikka from Helsinki:

I guess it would good to listen to the full show before posting!!
