9:25am

9:25am
BSI:

[Years ago in a record store, asking about a Sparks album]
Clerk: They're a couple of weird English guys.
Me: What do they sound like?
Clerk: A couple of weird English guys
Me: Sold!
9:55am
Binky:
Sparks aren't English?
9:57am
dc pat:
oi.
10:03am
dc pat:
ROCK. Nice Ex choice. Don't know if I have this one.
10:03am
Handsome Harry:
Great show thus far. Really enjoying it.
10:04am
dc pat:
all's I'm going to say is I'm wearing the jersey of the Irish national soccer team...carry on...
10:07am
Elias:
Great show! Reception has been very good lately in Astoria, Queens and I've been discovering lots of new shows.
10:07am
dc pat:
ok I'm guessing Fliying Lizards just got re-released? Third time this week. Love it.
10:08am
BSI:
Friends don't let friends drink green beer. Have a proper stout, fer crissakes. Black as death, as nature intended.
10:08am
Cecile:
awesome.
I love the flying lizards
I think it's a music meme, pat, spreading like wildfire.
10:09am
Cecile:
Ugh. I have to dodge two parades today.
Hopefully no one will pass out next to me like they did last year. Had to shove him awake and banish him to another seat so I could get off the bus.
10:11am
Mike East:
Proud to say I've never drank a green beer. That never made much sense to me. I do like the corned beef tradition though. Got some waitin at home for me tonight. I'm not Irish, but I like food traditions.
10:12am
Wendy del Formaggio:
I just woke up and tuned in for Joy Division. WOW, I'm liking this set. Please fill in more often, Fidel!
10:12am
dc pat:
BSI, 'Cile: totally agree. St. P's day is for amateurs...but, what are ya gonna do? I made green eggs for the kids though...
10:15am
minnesota jeff:
Gooood morning all you crazy be-boppers, do-woppers, and street strutters! Remember, its St. Patricks Day so don't leave your home - its a irritating jocks paradise out there!
10:16am
Cecile:
I don't mind a nice celebration that we did one year - soda bread and lamb stew and Guinness for dinner, Irish coffee for dessert. But Im' sure as hell not going out tonight.
10:16am
dc pat:
MN Jeff: exactly--I was trying to think of a way to phrase it.
10:17am
dc pat:
in my neighborhood it's irritating Republicans puking all over the place.
10:17am
Parq:
God, Jeff, don't remind me. My wife (who is Spanish) said that the way I feel on 3/17 is the way Pamplonans feel during the Running of the Bulls. I pointed out that the running of the bulls does not include everyone, tourists and locals alike, dressing in Spanish-themed clown outfits.
10:17am
Non-Irish Beavis and Butthead Type:
Look out, man! I'm gonna hurl!
10:18am
Elias:
I hope someone passes out next to me so I can liberate them of the green.
10:20am
Cecile:
I love this song. Police and Thieves is a great album.
10:20am
minnesota jeff:
Also, if your a sports fan your favorite local team will be wearing a crummy green version of their usual uniform.
10:20am
Wendy del Formaggio:
dc pat, do you live in Hoboken? aka Pukeboken?
Parq, well said!
10:20am
dc pat:
love Junior
Well I'm still rootin for the Repub of Ireland today, fuck the phonies!
10:20am
Leprechaun:
@Elias: Ah, yes. The liftin' o' the green. It's a Paddy Day tradition, me boyo.
10:20am
Cecile:
Everyone should just stay home and watch The Secret of Kells.
10:21am
fidel:
police and thieves! thanks, cecile. i forgot the album title, silly me.
10:21am
BSI:
DCP @ 10:17: exactly. It's them and their kids (GWU students) invading chinatown like a wave of jock vikings...... lucky me, I need to be there just to catch a bus home. Praise allah for a nuclear-powered taser and menacing glare...
10:22am
dc pat:
nah, I live in Puke-Glover Park, DC...which is actually a great hood....except today...
10:25am
Cecile:
Wow, I just went back to 1982.
10:26am
Wendy del Formaggio:
dc pat, your description sounded like Pukeboken. They had their St Pat's Day a few weeks ago, a yearly cluster-eff of the young and privileged barfing all over the place at 10am. 30,000 jocks and their chicks descend on a city one-square mile in size. oy.
10:26am
1982:
Make yourself comfortable, hun. Like a drink?
10:27am
Mike East:
@Cecile - I tried watching Secret of the Kells with my 6 yr old but it didn't keep her attention. Worth trying again?
10:27am
Bloomturd:
Are the little people hanging out the windows yet?
10:29am
Cecile:
1982, thanks. I'd like a Guinness. I know, it's pretty exotic.
10:30am
1982:
I happen to have six in the fridge. Slip off your shoes.
10:30am
Cecile:
Mike, it might be for an older kid, although my friend's 3 year old liked the wood fairy (although she was scared at points).. You might also want to watch it yourself - it's a good movie for adults, too - gorgeous and unique.
10:31am
Cecile:
Thank you. I'll put my hightops in the closet. Some buffalo wings would also be nice. Those are also hard to find.
10:31am
Handsome Harry:
THE RUNNING OF THE BROS
10:31am
Cecile:
Did you know that they're not from buffalos?
10:33am
Cecile:
@1982, do you have MTV? Those videos are crazy!
10:33am
Parq:
It's not just the drunkenness, although that would be bad enough alone. It's the whole clownish, cartoonish gloss that's given to the Irish identity on 3/17. A nice midwestern family can be as sober as can be, but if they're all dressed in plastic, polyester green novelty clothing and big silly hats, it irks me just as much. People really seem to think that's what being Irish is all about.
10:34am
1982:
@Cecile: Yes, it's not widely advertised that they're actually leprechaun forearms.
10:35am
Cecile:
Really? Give me extra.
10:35am
1982:
Num!
10:36am
BSI:
Bushmills neat, please.
...there, I did my part.
.......actually, make that two. Cheers.
10:38am
Cecile:
I like that New Order album you put on, 1982. Who knew they had so much talent after Ian passed? it's really synthy, though. Like Soft Cell!
10:44am
1982:
Fidel is the real hero. He just gives me some props, is all. It's kind of a tainted love!
10:45am
dc pat:
Parq: check out Jinx Lennon's tune "Nutin but a Leprechaun"
10:45am
Carmichael:
Good mornin' everyone. Let the sterotyping begin!
10:46am
Cecile:
yeah, we're digging here in bedsitland.
10:49am
Carmichael:
Pat, I'm with ya 100%. I'm gonna have a pint in a quiet corner with 2 other actual Irishmen. Then I'll hop into the car and drive home alone, whilst trying to make a few drunken leprechaun hood ornaments on the way.
10:49am
dc pat:
to me Ireland is Stiff Little Fingers, Undertones, James Joyce and Yeats and stickin it to the English. ok, moving on...
10:50am
dc pat:
..no offense Englishers...
10:51am
Kurt Weill:
Kurt Vile's music belongs to all of us.
10:51am
dc pat:
BUSHMILLS?? FUCK THAT! JAMESON!!
10:52am
BSI:
American by birth but 100% English by blood, hence I'd prefer a Sam Smith's Imperial Stout to a Guinness, but hell, cheers is cheers.
10:53am
Parq:
Pat, Powers or Tullie for me, please.
10:53am
dc pat:
...you gotta it right there, Guiness is ok but nothin' compared to sam smiths...
10:53am
BSI:
DCP: nice Frank Booth moment just then!
10:54am
Carmichael:
BSI, I love that movie. And Frank Booth LOVES his Pabst Blue Ribbon.
10:55am
dc pat:
thank 'ee.
10:56am
malachy:
tullamore dew 10 yr. for me.
up mayo!
10:57am
minnesota jeff:
"Heineken?! Fuck that shit! PABST - BLUE - RIBBONNNNN!"
10:57am
Carmichael:
Me Da drank Bushmills. I can't tolerate any hard liquor, so I stay with the pint. Anything IPA-ish. I'll raise a glass to all a yous in about 7 hours.
10:59am
Piper:
I'm reminded of the anecdote about how the Irish gave the Scots the bagpipes ... but the Scots didn't understand it was joke.
10:59am
BSI:
Jameson seems a bit too sweet for me, somehow. Maybe I've burned too many tastebuds with the Islay single-malts or sumthin'.
11:01am
dc pat:
definitely more sweet. I just found out that we're coming into a little more dough than previously expected so I'll def be throwing back some jameson and black water in .... exactly 5 1/2 hours.
11:02am
dc pat:
anybody ever see an Irish pipes player live?? It's fekkin amazing. TOTALLY different than Scottish pipes.
11:03am
Carmichael:
Bushmills is supposedly the oldest continuosly operating distillery on earth.
11:05am
Carmichael:
Pat, you mean the Uilleann pipes? Played with a pump instead of blowing in a tube? You're right, they're a thing of wonder in the hands of a pro.
11:05am
Swami:
My fave Bowie period! Thanks!
11:06am
andymorphic:
Protestant's can't make whiskey!
11:06am
dc pat:
Carm: precisely, saw a guy in PGH that was supposedly the Jimi Hendrix of the Uillean pipes and another guy too. not only the bellows but they have keys that play chords too.
11:07am
Cecile:
I liked what someone said - the difference between Irish whiskey and Scotch was that Irish whiskey is smoother on your throat so you can talk all night.
11:11am
Julius:
I think it's pronounced "No-velle-er"
11:13am
still b/p:
re: genuine Irish products -- Conor McPherson and Martin McDonagh make me laugh, and cringe a little. Jameson's always good, but especially with a bit of decent chocolate in the woods. Tried Tullamore just last week, but it just won't _ _ _.
11:14am
fidel:
oops, what did i say, julius? i'm not so good with names.
11:16am
glenn:
bushmill's and jameson's are distilled in different places, but the same (french) company owns them both. that said, i like the black bush. slainte, all of y'all.
11:17am
BSI:
This comment thread is making me insanely thirsty.
11:18am
glenn:
that further said, my favourite irish product has to be McCann's steel cut irish oatmeal. 'tis a thing of beauty in the morning.
11:19am
glenn:
the redbreast is a good whiskey as well.
11:20am
Parq:
Glenn, thanks. I'm not fond of supporting Ulster, but I do like to buy from the Fench, the latter because it pisses right-wingers off. Interesting dilemma..
11:20am
dc pat:
BSI: gah, I know--don't think I'm going to make it. I tried not to say anything but couldn't help myself...
11:20am
Parq:
Oh, and I'm totally with you on the oatmeal.

Oh, man, the Indian Giver takes me back.
11:27am
Parq:
An Irishman and a Scot are arguing over whose people make the best whisky. "Look," says the Scot, "I don't even know why this conversation is necessary. Scotch whiskey is the ultimate. I know it. Everyone in the world knows it. You know it!"
"Do you want to know how powerful Irish whiskey is?" says the man of Dublin. "Last Saturday night, I finished off a fifth of Irish whiskey all by myself. I couldn't even leave the house, so I went straight to bed, slept for twelve hours, and then got up and went to Mass."
The Scot laughs derisively. "That's supposed to impress me??" he snorts. "Do you have any idea how many men in Dublin, every Saturday night, drink a bottle of Irish whiskey, go to bed and get up the next morning to go to Mass?"
"Well, yes," the Irishman quietly replies, "but I'm Jewish."

Rubicon is one of my all-time favorite Braxe And Falke tracks..... thanks!
11:32am
Cecile:
wow, love this Braxe and Falke. All the best bits of the 80s.
11:33am
Carmichael:
He he ... the Rubicon is the name of the bar I'm headed to.
11:33am
Cecile:
it's your soundtrack. Wear your white blazer.
11:34am
dc pat:
the bar I'm headed to doesn't have a name but it's sitting between my kitchen and my dining room...
11:34am
dc pat:
Thanks Bad Ron, just forwarded that to my whole family (except Mom cuz she thinks Sir Paul is a nice boy)
11:37am

Love the high energy show, Fidel -- brilliant
11:41am
Carmichael:
This song appears on the soundtrack to The Commitments.
11:42am
fidel:
i did something irish after all on this show!
11:42am
BSI:
DCP: heh, similar strategy for my bar of choice. Tonight, it will be the basement and all the lovely noise-making gear therein...
11:49am
Paul:
Where's Jason? Is he okay?
11:50am
dc pat:
I'll bet Jason's still asleep...
11:51am
fidel:
i should say so! jason is in austin having a ball at SXSW.
11:51am
Parq:
This has been great, folks. Talking Irish shit with like minded people while listening to great music from all over -- man, I wish I could spend every 3/17 this way.
11:52am
glenn:
in irish, it's called craic.
11:52am
Mike East:
Great show Fidel! Well put, Parq
11:52am

SXSW? They're still doing that>
11:52am
dc pat:
I'm with Parq, thanks all Irish folks and non-Irish alike.
11:52am
glenn:
or at least, talking shit is craic.
11:52am
Ike:
Just arrived at work in midtown Manhattan a few min. ago. The streets are throbbing and heaving with rank amateurs already, wearing upside-down green plastic bowls on their heads and squawking mindlessly. Sheesh.
11:53am
Cecile:
Pylon!
11:54am
Wendy del Formaggio:
Jeez! This show just keeps getting better and better. Come back soon, Fidel!
11:54am
northguineahills:
Awesome cover, can't believe there aren't more of this classic (REM) song.
11:55am
Ike:
Oh and leaving my apt. this morning to the sounds of Joy Division and the Ex = fantastic! And hey, R.E.M. covered this Pylon song, didn't they? Obviously the original is better. And weirder.
11:55am
Carmichael:
Hey, check out the brain on Glenn! :-) You even spelled it correctly.
I am wit you, Parq. I'll mutter your name over a pint of foam tonight.
Pat, everyone's Irish today.
Ike, if you've seen the movie Rollerball, you can handle that crowd.
Thanks Fidel!
11:55am
dc pat:
Ike: aaahhh, yer too late. We've already been through all that. Start it up again on Joe's comments...
11:55am

Cool REM cover!
11:56am

Joe better play some Stiff Little Fingers. Like Alternative Ulster, for starters.

Great show, Fidel! You're keeping me going at work today. Thanks.
11:56am

Suspect Device is one of my all time faves.
11:57am

Not an REM cover. REM covered Pylon. They were friends in Athens, GA.
11:57am
Parq:
Okay, this Killdozer is a perfect capper to this show.
11:58am
fishmonkeystew:
Good call, Cecile. I've learned something new.

fortunately or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it, i am blessed with the gift of perfect spelling and punctuation. so the interweb infuriates me at the same time as it captivates me.
