Rob Weisberg and guest co-host Irene Trudel broadcast live from Barbès, 376 9th Street in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Three hours of live music from three bands!
We kick it off with Banda de los Muertos, a stellar unit of NY jazz, experimental and multi-culti musicians playing the bombastic brass band music of Sinaloa in northwestern Mexico. Things then get a little more intimate with a set by Maeandros. The ensemble, led by the brilliant oud player, singer and songwriter Mavrothi Kontanis, performs classic traditional and popular songs of Greece and the surrounding countries as well as Mavrothi's origional compositions. Then we turn it back up a notch for the big finale as Spanglish Fly delivers a scorching set of 60s-style Latin soul and boogaloo.
Massive thanks to former FMU tech director (and current volunteer tech advisor extraordinaire) Doron Gura who helped resolve web connection problems on this broadcast, and to Irene, Mark Koch, Mike Cades, Katie Gentile, Bil Bowen and board op Veronica Liu.
