A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

i agree listener mark! maira makes a compelling argument...i saw that colbert when it originally aired. he must love her, with all the fab pics he showed! and he was so kind not fake slimy at all
  10:44am
~L:

Maira has a great piece on All things considered on NPR that aired last November. You can listen to it on the NPR site, for ten minutes, but then you have to turn WFMU back on... of course.

  11:19am
Adrian in London:

  11:19am
trouble:

bonjour pierre!
  11:21am
trouble:

adrian, the womble thing is lost on the american audience i fear. i found it via you tube and wish it WAS part of my childhood. Now how about that photo? pretty please?

  11:26am
pierre:

Well, you got me. Wikipedia has nothing about it having run in the US, and yet I remember it being around. Coulda sworn it had at least a breif US run, but honestly, I can't say for sure.
  11:36am
slugluv1313:

i remember the WOMBLES!!!!
  11:36am
listener mark:

Thank you trouble. The music is great this morning, and the sun is rising.
  11:36am
trouble:

perhaps it ran briefly on public tv parq. i suppose this is the reason the republicans fear NPR and public TV: the wombles. o the humanity!
  11:38am
slugluv1313:

i used to hear THE WOMBLES hit songs on Scott Muni's "Things From England" show, i think Friday afternoons on WNEW-FM in NYC -- and also have vague recollections of seeing film/video clips of the songs on TV . . .
  11:41am
dc pat:

I thought I saw the Wombles when I was little too...maybe I saw it later though
  11:42am
Parq:

Miss T, let's all go to a Tea Party rally dressed as Wombles, and see if we can send them into a panic.
  11:42am
john:

Woops. I thought that was Dennis DeYoung, of the legendary suburban Chicago band, Styx.
  11:44am
dc pat:

yeah man, all that Pepsi and Kool-Aid probably fogged my memory..
  11:48am
don:

wow yes
  11:49am
pierre:

aaaaah nuages… fortunately, nuages are not on Paris, what about the u.s. ?
  11:49am
Parq:

I was in college in the 70s! Wait, I guess that knda makes your point ...
  11:50am
Slim:

lived in Edinburgh as a kid from 88'–91' – they were showing PLENTY of Wombles re-runs at that time. Seem to remember one or two wombles-based homework assignments...
  11:51am
trouble:

pas des nuages ici pierre.
  11:51am
dc pat:

I know a French guy that said he saw Django's grandson play at the French embassy here in dc. Couldn't get a decent idea whether he was good or not..
  11:53am
trouble:

wombles based homework: that is living!
  11:55am
βrian:

@Pierre. Pas de nuages au middlewest, non plus. Mais demain nous aurons un ciel bas.
  11:58am
pierre:

i heard Django's grandson at Marciac Jazz Festival. It was good, also nothing really breathtacking, the emotions was here for sure.

@ Brain : "un ciel bas dans le middlewest", should be nice to look at while listening to fmu. Also sounds like a Clint Eastwood movie > but if it was made in french
  11:59am
pierre:

@ Brian (sorry for the spelling)
  12:00pm
βrian:

Pas de quoi. Happens all the time.
  12:00pm
Handsome Harry:

I work with a lot of Long Islanders. Less than a second after Trouble announced "Yo!," there was an actual "YO!" exclamation in my office. It was a beautiful thing.
