Hello Everyone. I am nervous and jittery. No Ken. On my own. Fears arise of inadequacy. Be merciful.
  12:12pm
Marmalade Kitty:

Hey Clay, how are you? coo or cuckoo?
  12:12pm
MD:

YOU GOT IT!!!!!
ROCK ON!!!
  12:13pm
Cecile:

what MD said.
  12:13pm
Carmichael:

Good morning, Jittery J and all fans.
  12:13pm
BSI:

Ken would suggest ALTERNATE NOSTRIL BREATHING as a way to ground & center....... particularly on-the-air, amplified, with tons of reverb, alternate nostril breathing... You'll feel like a million bucks.
  12:14pm
Inanimate Bird Appreciation Society:

Hooray for Clay!
  12:15pm
Cecile:

Listening to the show on archive, I'm struck by how much you guys struggle with the same things I do. Birds of a feather...

Sounds like a winning breakfast to me!!!
  12:21pm
Cecile:

Oh, yes. The voices.
  12:21pm
Matt from Springfield:

Little chocolate donuts and cigarettes. The REAL breakfast of champions.
  12:22pm
BSI:

not M.O.R. at all ... the El Cid piece was complete hardcore. Seriously!
  12:22pm
John Belushi:

Who knew, Matt.
  12:22pm
listener mark:

how flexible and tenuous our grip on reality actually is
  12:22pm
Brian in UK:

Good afternoon, sir. You can also have concerns of adequacy. That'll be $50
  12:22pm
Cecile:

You remembered right.
  12:25pm
Dan B From Upstate:

Afternoon, Clay. I'm sorry I missed last week's show. It was a thing of beauty.
  12:25pm
Matt from Springfield:

The Missing Persons would be the MOR; Wayne Newton and Doris would be..."Beautiful Music", if they still even have that.
  12:26pm
Cecile:

heh, Missing Persons is exactly what an aging Zappa sideman and a Playboy bunny thiought New Wave would sound like. It's pretty wrong, but funny.
  12:27pm
Matt from Springfield:

Clay, one thing you could do during long fill-ins would be to write a one-man radio play, something you can do yourself with minimal FX, and perform it on the air LIVE!
  12:27pm
don:

clay.. you're the man now dog
  12:28pm
Ike:

Apparently "beautiful music" stations have been resurrected in FL and AZ. Appropriate locations for them.

I'm not much for the 60s and 70s pop, but I love when Clay goes 80s.
  12:29pm
Carmichael:

The aging Zappa sideman has been beating the living shit out of a cowering drumset with Jeff Beck for the last few years. He plays mostly standing, and occasionally runs laps around the kit while smiting.
  12:29pm
BSI:

ooh, obscure new wave is always a good move. Something from Peter Baumann's "repeat repeat" LP, anyone? mm?
  12:30pm
Carmichael:

Or perhaps a tune by Raydio.
  12:30pm
BSI:

not that PB is "obscure" but, eh...
  12:30pm
Dan B From Upstate:

We have a beautiful music station here in Utica of all places. Can't say I've ever listened to it.
  12:30pm
Parq:

Ah, that's right, Clay's here. I came back in the middle of the disco track, and I was pretty durn sure that it wasn't Irene.
  12:30pm
Marmalade Kitty:

Happy Monday!
  12:32pm
Cecile:

I didn't say the aging Zappa sideman couldn't kick my ass in every physical and artistic way possible...:D
  12:32pm
Cecile:

Got any Bram Tchaikovsky?
  12:32pm
Cecile:

ah! 20/20! The theme song of the powerpop underground.
  12:33pm
Carmichael:

Oh man, I LOVED Bram T. Saw them on Don Kirshner's show and fell in love with their sound. "Girl of My Dreams" still plays in my head, whether I want it to or not.
  12:35pm
Cecile:

Carm, the first three songs off that first album just destroy.
  12:35pm
Cecile:

Clay, do you have any Shoes?
  12:36pm
BSI:

dunno the Bram T. material but as a graphic designer that one LP sleeve always stuck in my head as a great thing...
  12:36pm
Cecile:

It was pretty great.
  12:37pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Cecile 12:35: Well you can't borrow his shoes now, he's wearing them!
  12:37pm
JOhn Guggle:

Always a pleasant surprise to hear Clay on a Monday afternoon.
  12:37pm
Brian in UK:

Jason Falkners my man.
  12:38pm
BSI:

ah, Larry Fast is back! I played the hell out of these Synergy records through highschool...
  12:38pm
Marmalade Kitty:

Bram Stokers Count Dracula landed in Whitby N.Yorkshire.. AAaahhhhhh.. +-+,
  12:38pm
Radio Consultant:

The "Beautiful Music" programming format of several decades back ago has been renamed to "Nursing Home PA System".
  12:38pm
Cecile:

bwahahaha
You left off Yellow Pills, clay.
LOL! Synergy. My God. My early college friends were all techies who were building synths. I heard lots of Synergy.
  12:39pm
Carmichael:

Strange Land Changed Land has a pretty cool classic WWII propoganda poster style. Now that I went to AllMusic and revisited the album, Lady From the USA and Robber are coming back to me.
  12:39pm
Cecile:

get out of my head, BSI.
  12:40pm
Brian in UK:

Are you in a warm place, Mr Clay?
  12:40pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

whoa
  12:40pm
v k:

NO QUARTER - my absolutely favorite 'zone out' or 'trip out' song in high school - love it!
  12:41pm
Cecile:

DUDE. DUDE. good choice.
  12:41pm
?:

dude, gettin the led out on a Monday afternoon. clay. Clay. Clay! CLAY!
  12:42pm
MD:

CLAY ASTOUNDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  12:42pm
Matt from Springfield:

This is why a bit of Clay is always a good thing!

@v k: I myself liked "The Rain Song" for "zoning out".
  12:42pm
dc (y):

agree w/ Zep choice but man those guits sounded kinda lame. Haven't heard this in a while.
  12:42pm
Carmichael:

I wonder if TortElvis would attempt this ....
  12:42pm
Clay:

Struggling here to find footing. Needed to get Led out. No one called. The rejection hit my like a solid left. Love you all, though. Already the voices say ... "not as good as last week ... not as good as last week .... "
  12:42pm
JOhn Guggle:

Haha. "No Quarter" always reminds me of my college radio station. Some jerk brought a band into record in our unfinished music library during my show, the guitar player played the main riff for like forty minutes, the sound bleeding onto my show. I told them to stop, they didn't. I freaked out, the bass player tried to fight me until an authority figure came and told them to leave
  12:42pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

one of the first riffs I learned on the GEETAR
  12:42pm
bennett4senate:

why is it that any time Led is gettin' got out on any other station I filp it immediately, but on WFMU its totally killing!!??
  12:43pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

Clay you one funny man
  12:44pm
Carmichael:

DCE, you mean the first riff after Louie Louie ...
  12:44pm
Matt from Springfield:

@DCE: Awesome! The wah-guitar part (rhythm) or the clear electric guitar?
  12:44pm
Cecile:

bennett, because it's liket he 70s. You didn't hear it as often, so it was a huge treat.
  12:44pm
MD:

SUMMER OF 2011................THE SUMMER OF CLAY!!
  12:44pm
Cecile:

And, you hear deep cuts. I never thought I would learn to hate Immigrant Song, and yet i have...

Unless the Viking kitties were doing it.
  12:45pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

the riff part, for sure. I remember my uncle teaching me Louie Louie out in the yard on the first electric guitar he gave me back in '83
  12:45pm
MD:

THIS IS THE PART WHERE THE SWORD COMES OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  12:46pm
Cecile:

One of Plant's best vocals, too. Understated.
  12:46pm
dc (y):

keep it cooly baby.
  12:47pm
MD:

LED TACO!!!
  12:47pm
Jonathan from Maine:

Thanks for Missing Persons, Clay. (Talk about CONTINUITY!) MOR or not, be it ageing bunnies or Zappa sidemen, and then to Zep . . . a little more MOR . . . NICE MONDAY AFTERNOON!
  12:49pm
Matt from Springfield:

So that was a DISCO station in Florida?
You've come a long way since then (home to FMU!), but Clay Pigeon past, present, forever!

  12:53pm
Cecile:

Yello deep cuts were pretty great.
  12:53pm
Marmalade Kitty:

Christopher Walken is the main man!
  12:54pm
Cheri Pi:

Speaking of No Quarter, the Cincinnati police just shot and killed our friend this morning. There are no words to explain how distraught our community is right now. It'll be interesting to hear how they justify this in their news conference at 1.
  12:54pm
Cecile:

WOW. Cheri, that's heavy. I'm so sorry.
  12:56pm
Matt from Springfield:

Alexander Hamilton.
1st Treasury Secretary and our N/Ath President.
  12:56pm
dale:

listening in the hudson valley over the mt. hope repeater. tivoli radio in the house, radio shack am/fm/shortwave outdoors!
  12:56pm
Parq:

Dear Lord, Cheri. We read about this in the news way too often, but to have a personal connection to such a case is nearly unimaginable. Our hearts are with you.
  12:56pm
MD:

FMU....IS OUR MAINSTREAM!!!
YOU KNOW THAT CLAY!!
  12:57pm
rst-wiley:

Real life horror, Cheri. Take good care.
  12:57pm
Matt from Springfield:

NaP -- Not a President.

But honestly, it's Hamilton, not any of the presidents, that will get you Swedish Fish and Dr. Pepper! Put them both in your mouth at once--Crazy Awesome!
  12:58pm
Jonathan from Maine:

Ah, Lewiston . . . you'll understand Stephen King (who went to high school at Lisbon High, a ways down the Androscoggin). Few King readers know that he studied with poet Robert Creeley and helped fund the National Poetry Foundation in Orono, Maine. Drop an email when you come to Maine, Clay, and I'll show you around . . . Sorry to hear your news, Cheri.
  12:58pm
Handsome Harry:

Zappin' Nads!! You tell 'em, Clay!!
  12:58pm
Dan B From Upstate:

You'd call him Aaron Burr from the way he's dropping Hamiltons. Love that tune.
  12:58pm

That's a trip!!!!!!!!! Alarm clock is the old Realistic DX440!!!!
  12:58pm
Julie:

Good morning, Pigeon
  12:59pm
Cheri Pi:

Our police have been known for their heavy handed responses before, we have even had riots in protest.
trying to keep an open mind before I hear the "facts."
  12:59pm
Marmalade Kitty:

sorry to hear that Cheri
  1:00pm
Bas, NL:

My condoleances to you, Cheri.
  1:01pm
Matt from Springfield:

Sorry to hear that Cheri! Didn't know you were in Cincinnati--a smaller city, but I've heard more than it's fair share of horror stories in the news. Like the Mid-America LAPD. Keep your friend in your heart, we'll keep you in ours.
  1:01pm
Cecile:

Cheri, I guess a measured response is good in your case, but the outcome won't change no matter what's found and that's what sucks.
  1:02pm
dale:

mine is the dx398, made by sangean. crappy shortwave propagation now, though.
  1:02pm
Cecile:

WISHBONE ASH. I had and enjoyed Wishbone 4 for a long time.
  1:03pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hi Julie, welcome to Clay-Fest!
  1:03pm
dale:

i couldn't afford a yaesu. i do have a grundig satellit 700 i'll sell ya for $300, though
  1:04pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Cecile: I have an LP of Wishbone Ash I bought in college. I like them, an underrated 70s rock classic! Did you listen to Humble Pie and Nazareth?
  1:04pm
MD:

Propagation gettin better....COME ON CYCLE 24!!!!!!!!!!
  1:05pm
Marmalade Kitty:

I'll never be fooled again by internet vernacular!
DC Pat(y)
  1:05pm
dale:

hey clay, just watched phantom of the paradise and thought 'bout ya because i think you played some paul williams a while back. if you want a kick see paul williams as a little kid in 'the loved ones'
  1:06pm
Bas, NL:

Hi Clay!!
  1:06pm
Cecile:

I didn't listen to Humble Pie, but loved the hell out of the Nazareth Hair of the Dog album - the people I babysat for gave it to me as a graduation gift! I hate Love Stings, but Hair of the Dog is a great damn basher.
  1:07pm
BSI:

Need I remind you, Mr. Pigeon, that you haven't played Bobby Vinton since 11june09? There's RAW MAGIC hiding in those obscure B-sides from his early days...
  1:08pm
Parq:

'Clie, I was the opposite; Nazareth never did if for me, but I loved the Humble Pie Filmore album.
  1:08pm
gina k:

Hey Clay... Great to hear ya on the radio today. I'm an over the hill punk rocker convert from Jazz Fusion too! + almost ready for aarp :)
  1:10pm
slugluv1313:

ISIS rules!!!!!! waiting for the sonrise . . . !
  1:10pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Cecile,Parq: Love "Hurts"?
But I like both HP and Nazareth--and Mountain! The hair bands of the 80s were shallow wannabes of these 70s Titans.
  1:10pm
Marmalade Kitty:

anything with Filmore atmosphere was good.. Top venue
  1:11pm
Dan B From Upstate:

Are you a fan of the long tracks, Clay?
  1:11pm
BSI:

of course after shilling for Bobby Vinton, it's now time to raise a fist for BUDGIE...
  1:11pm
Matt from Springfield:

I once said to DCE that "Clay's a proud defender of Wishbone Ash! If he doesn't...who will?"
DCE replied that Clay's "off to be a warrior"...I can imagine you getting on your steed, with a radio mike for a sword and a Wishbone Ash LP as your sword!
  1:11pm
Parq:

Agree and then some on Mountain; another one of my touchstone 70s bands.
  1:12pm
Clay:

Enjoying all your comments. Wrestling with crippling insecurities. Wish this how could last forever. It's almost over already.
  1:12pm
dc (y):

anybody else think Dylan's tunes are too long? .....Do I have anything nice to say today?
  1:13pm
dc (y):

funny, my comment right after Clay's...
  1:14pm
?:

@ dc(y): I was just about to ask if there were any other Dylan non-fans out there. . . I am one of them
  1:14pm
Sean Gostage:

This will read like a very strange comment but I am a Brit who is a fan of all things American. I have memorised all 50 state capitals and am having a go at memorising the 44 presidents, do you think I need to get a life?
  1:14pm
Cecile:

My favorite Mountain cover is Couch Flambeau's version of Mississippi Queen. Jay Tiller giggles at the lyrics, but plays guitar nearly as well as Leslie West
  1:14pm
Cecile:

No, because I used to know a hell of a lot about England.
  1:14pm
?:

what's the capital of SOuth Dakota? Vermont?
  1:15pm
Dan B From Upstate:

Sean, you already know more about America than most Americans.
  1:15pm
Cecile:

I'm not a fan of Dylan, but everything on Blood on the Tracks is great.
  1:15pm
Parq:

Sean: virtually no American could name all of the presidents, and many cannot correctly state the current president's nationality or religion.
  1:15pm
seang:

Big rally at the Paul Revere Mall in the North End of Boston against the corporate tax cheats--rise up!--marchforcommonsense.org
  1:15pm
Cecile:

that too, Dan B.
  1:18pm
dc (y):

oh I dig a lot of Dylan but it just seems like he's over the top some times...
  1:18pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Sean: I know all 44, but that includes William Henry "Prez for 30 Days Then Catch Pneumonia and Die" Harrison and others that aren't too important in the long run.

BUT, it's easier than memorizing all the British PMs, so I say: whaddaya got to lose?
  1:19pm
Dan B From Upstate:

Yeah, I know a lot about the UK from all of the Doctor Who, Top Gear, and QI that I watch. I often wonder if I should get a life.
  1:20pm
Julie:

Where is Starcastle?
  1:20pm
Parq:

DC(y): "Blood" and the follow-up album, "Desire", comprised the shank of Dylan's "novel set to music" period. Me, I always dug those songs, but I liked all of those jams that covered a full side of an LP in the pre-punk era, too.
  1:20pm
Sean Gostage:

Vermont-Montpellier

South Dakota-Pierre

And I promise I didn't look it up
  1:21pm
Inanimate Bird Appreciation Society:

Uh oh, Julie's caught the bug.
  1:21pm
Clay:

I forgot my Starcastle, Julie. I have Close to the Edge, though. Tempted to play the whole thing.
  1:22pm
BSI:

Not at all ashamed to be a bigger supporter of Arsenal than DC United. Is that treason? Or just superior intellect?
  1:23pm
Cecile:

Clay, 70s Beach Boy deep cuts, yes.
Yes, no.
Quiz item? Which member of the Rutles was on this Beach Boys album?
  1:24pm
Marmalade Kitty:

BSI, It would be , were Arsenal anything special ;)
  1:25pm
Julie:

Sending Clay a virtual pat on the head
  1:25pm
JJ:

Boring is good for getting in the zone at work!
  1:25pm
Chelsea FC 'ooligan:

BSI you RIGHT BASTARD!! Arsenal can drop dead!! I'd like to see you talk like that when we invade your pitch! (chucks dustbin through a plate glass window)
  1:26pm
Cecile:

Yes! Ricky Fataar!
  1:26pm
Tom G:

Arsenal is ok, but there's only one Fulham.
  1:26pm
Handsome Harry:

I am in the not-a-Dylan-fan camp. Except for the Christmas Album. That's one incredible work of art.
  1:26pm
Matt from Springfield:

I know Cecile! Ricky Fataar = "Stig" from The Rutles!
  1:27pm
Marmalade Kitty:

Good luck Arsenal.. Hate ManU!
  1:28pm
Julie:

Clay...Clay...Clay (shaking head)
  1:29pm
Marmalade Kitty:

Call me?
  1:29pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

Clay, how bout you just call all of us!
  1:31pm
BSI:

God bless the MLS but it isn't half the game of the Premier League, even with those "chelsea" creatures scuttling around like horseshoe crabs... now, about that BUDGIE record...
  1:31pm
Cecile:

I'm sorry. Not calling. Not at work. But give me the 800 number and I might call you and Fabs sometime.
  1:32pm
Boardies:

@Cecile: BAKAWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!
  1:32pm
Julie:

I think the 800 number is only for marathon time
  1:32pm
Matt from Springfield:

You're a serious perfectionist Clay. I can tell because I am once myself--just relax and know that there are legions of fans worldwide, enjoying you and diggin' your show regardless of whether things "go right" or not.
  1:33pm
Julie:

Wrestling?
  1:33pm
Boardies:

"Hugh, tell us about Hugh/you"
  1:33pm
Dan B From Upstate:

Bowie loves Fannie is a great name for this episode.
  1:34pm
real dc (y) pat fc united:

WHOA, missing soccer talk. I'm supporting DC United this year. I'm tired of not being into the home team. Spurs are my fave English team but they're not cutting it. I don't know why folks get into Arsenal. The only thing I can say about Chelsea is their "third" jerseys rule.

Thing with Chelsea is they've got more money than they know what to do with, thus the ridiculous contracts and the $50 mil Torres statue. Arsenal is fun but they flatter to deceive. They lose and draw too many games because they don't have a real keeper or center back. MLS is gettin better.
  1:37pm

can't explain the Arsenal thing. It's like being born left-handed, man, you just ARE... Arsenal supporters are born fully-formed. BUT, this promises to be one of the better DCU seasons in a couple, in'cha Allah...

I went to Radford University, way the hell in the southwest of VA, they had a guitar and vinyl store, Barry's that had great values. A friend from Danville took me to a fabulous, cheap store in Danville, VA. Chapel Hill and Greensboro, NC have a bunch of good ones as well.

Wikipedia:

@dale: On December 1, 1978 at around 11pm, Sadler killed country songwriter Lee Emerson Bellamy with one gunshot to the head. The shooting was the culmination of a month's long dispute the men had over Darlene Sharp, who was Bellamy's former girlfriend, and Sadler's girlfriend at the time. Bellamy was, by all accounts, a loud and obnoxious drug addict[citation needed], and was not pleased by her involvement with Sadler. Witnesses gave testimony that prior to the shooting, Bellamy made many harassing phone calls to Sadler, and numerous threats on his life.

life gets its revenge: Sadler moved to Guatemala City in the mid 1980s and often hung out at a bar/restaurant called La Europa.... It was in Guatemala City that he was shot in the head one night in a taxi. He was airlifted to the U.S. by friends from Soldier Of Fortune Magazine, where he was hospitalized and remained in a coma for several months. He died little more than a year later in the Alvin C. York Medical Center in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. The circumstances involving his shooting remain a mystery.... The most common story identifies the incident as a robbery. According to his companion at the time, he had been training Nicaraguan counter-revolutionaries and had received death threats.
