Listener comments!

  12:07am
The Count of Al Dente:

Hi there. Love your opening. Did you create that?
  12:08am
D. Blumin:

Hey, Joe as per our listener, it's the Rapture next week. The end is scheduled for the next FMU schedule in October. Just wanted you to calm down!!! Tahnks Familyradio!
  12:11am
Joe McG:

Hey, Count! Nope, it's the Yip Yip Aliens. Thanks for the reminder about the Rapture, Daniel. I wish I'd gone apocalyptic this week.
  12:24am
The Count of Al Dente:

Boy, am I behind the times. I just found out they're muppets.
  12:25am
Joe McG:

I hope you don't mean Barry and Tyrone.
  12:31am
Joe D.:

I'd like to dedicate this set to all the long term girlfriends, wives, and especially the ex versions of those
  12:31am
Joe McG:

Well done, Duffy!
  12:39am
Joe D.:

You are the one doing it well, McG! Saving my night homeboy
  12:42am
Joe McG:

Thanks, man! Thanks always for tunin' in.
  12:43am
Marmalade Kitty:

Hola! :)
  12:45am
Joe McG:

Hey, Kitty of Marmalade!
  1:14am
Chop Scott:

JOE!
Risto--fantastic track. Always remember Maria L.!!
  1:17am
Joe McG:

I'm sure that's where I first heard it...it was one of her signature tunes!
  1:19am
#K:

a-hello-hello Joeke M. ! Best wishes on your show tonight! Sounds like a good episode so far.
  1:19am
edinblack:

Is this a Legendary Pink Dots satire?
  1:19am
Matt from Springfield:

Hi Joe!
Are you playing all electronic songs this set (or did you pre-program them :)
  1:20am
Joe McG:

Thanks, #K! I'm feeling good so far! :) Hey, Ed! Not so far as I know! Hey Matt! I'm programmed not to answer your question!
  1:23am
Matt from Springfield:

The resistance is programmed deep in this one...
I see I just missed Chaka Demus & Pliers -- you should play "Murder She Wrote". The only song from the Save The Last Dance soundtrack that I have and enjoy!
  1:24am
Matt from Springfield:

I love calypso, soca, ska, reggae and dub, but NOT dancehall! CD&P is the closest I get to liking dancehall.
  1:25am
Joe McG:

I'm getting a taste for it, Matt!
  1:27am
Matt from Springfield:

Like newer dancehall? It's one thing if it's reggae crossover from the 80s/90s, like Sly & Robbie produced Dawn Penn or Chaka Demus, but so much of the stuff after is heavy beat and rap-like vocals. My issue is it often lacks groove and coherence, but that's just me.
  1:29am
Joe McG:

I think the content of the newer stuff puts me off as it's so centered around gunplay and such. Seems like the older stuff was all about, uh, more carnal issues.
  1:31am
Matt from Springfield:

Now that stuff would be welcome on Surface Noise as it's always been.
"For Understanding Carnal Knowledge"
  1:31am
Joe McG:

That was the first hour of the program tonight, I think!
  1:44am
Joe McG:

Two points for anyone who can guess what "it" is.
  1:46am
Matt from Springfield:

Great Steam Machine! Very '72 sound!
I just downloaded the Dum Dum Girls EP today on iTunes, and realized Singles and EPs can once again be released easily.

But since everything's in digital files, someone should make a "surface noise" app--turn it on and your iPod songs will sound like a record! You could have settings like "first playing", "ambient", "audible", "popping" and "grooveyard"!
  1:48am
Joe McG:

Looks like you've got that million-dollar idea, Matt. Run with it!
  1:50am
Matt from Springfield:

All I gotta do is brush up on coding languages...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toni_Wine
Toni's name sounded familiar--besides writing "A Groovy Kind of Love", she sang vocals on "Sugar Sugar" and other Archies song, and was the female backing vocal in "It Hurts To Be In Love" and "You Were Always On My Mind"!
  1:54am
Joe McG:

She's one of my favorite female singers ever. That's her on most of the Archies records with female voices.
  1:55am
Matt from Springfield:

Wine is too important to be overtaken by sorrow, either fruit of the Vine OR Toni!

No pop no style, them's strictly roots! Althia and Donna are intriguing, first time I heard them.
  1:58am
Joe McG:

Their halterback give you a heart attack.
  1:59am
Matt from Springfield:

Ha ha, so it was the "halter back" that gives the " 'art attack"!

Oooh! Stories of "Brother Louie" fame!
  2:03am
Matt from Springfield:

HELLS YEAHHHHH!!!!
"Wuthering Heights"... a la 45!
  2:03am
tomB:

@matt. thx for the tip on Toni Wine. I always wondered about Pitney's b/ups. But dudes, I can't bear the Archies --Ellie Greenwhich mustof needed cash bad..
PS: Alright! a Kate Bush single!
  2:04am
edinblack:

Matt -- I once made MP3s of a Surfaris LP that declined into pure hiss (I don't know what that LP had undergone, but it looked horrible). It was great!
  2:06am
Matt from Springfield:

@tom,edinblack: Thanks for the feedback, glad to assist!

Btw, the legendary video of Kate Bush on SNL in '78:
http://www.wat.tv/video/kate-bush-the-man-with-the-2mg39_2ibet_.html
  2:08am
edinblack:

I thought that Kate Bush was sped up to 78 RPM!
  2:08am
Matt from Springfield:

ORIGINAL! Original!
So much higher, enthused, less trained! I have both versions, being a completist, but the '77 one you played is the one I LISTEN to!
  2:10am
Matt from Springfield:

@edinblack: Funny you should say that, on a recent Dark Night of the Soul, Julie cued a Kate Bush 10" at 33, unaware at first it was so high-pitched it was actually supposed to play at 45!
  2:11am
Matt from Springfield:

Joe: Wow, I wasn't the only one thinking of the DC5 with Steam Machine!
  2:15am
Joe McG:

Squeaky Kate is OK, but I like Kate the Woman. Especially on that song where she growls like a bear.
  2:17am
tomB:

@matt. &thx again for the vidlink. I used to tell KB's fans in '86 that I had seen her on SNL in the late 70s. Naturally they didn't believe me. Even I gave up believing me.
  2:17am
Brian in UK:

Good morning from UK. Fed the dog, cats & chickens. The sun pours down like honey as Al Kooper wrote; except this is not California.
  2:17am
Matt from Springfield:

I'm not so familiar with The Dreaming, but Julie's played a few songs with bear-growl Kate, and she's fond of that album. Check there for strong growls.
  2:18am
Joe McG:

Hey, Brian! Thanks for the Chakademus!
  2:19am
Matt from Springfield:

Photograph! My fav solo Ringo song!

@tomB: Email that to all those people--justice shall be yours!
I don't know what you'd call Kate's hairstyle in that video, but my Mom had that exact same style around that time!
  2:21am
Brian in UK:

Do you know what I mean 'bout Sly's drumming?
As soon as I saw that you had played Toni Wine; Groovy Kind of Love sprang to mind.
  2:26am
Joe McG:

Yep, I see what you mean, Brian. Did your mom really have a Kate Bush hairstyle, Matt?
  2:29am
Matt from Springfield:

Fer sure! Around 78/79 there's a picture of her with this same kind of, um, "straightened, semi-permed" hair hanging down. A collective cultural moment I suppose.

That whole episode of Dec 9 1978 seems great--in addition to 2 Kate Bush appearances, Eric Idle hosted, and the very next item after that video clip was apparently Dan Aykroyd's famous Julia Child kitchen sketch!
  2:30am
Brian in UK:

Here's a review of KB's 'new' one. A rehash of two previous rekkids.
http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/music/reviews/album-kate-bush-directors-cut-fish-people-2283117.html
  2:32am
Joe McG:

She ought to be careful or she's going to become one of these people who remake their old records instead of recording new records: Gang of Four, Richard Hell, etc.
  2:34am
Matt from Springfield:

Kate did record a new double-album in 2005, Aerial, after a 12 year absence. As long as her next album after this one has new material I would be happy.
  2:36am
tomB:

Richard Lloyd did a remake. Richard Hell too?
  2:37am
Brian in UK:

The reviewer, Andy Gill, which is funny, Joe because there is an Andy Gill in the Gang of Four. Anyway, he is probably the one reviewer who after reading I would buy a record on his recommendation alone. eg East River Pipe. Marjorie Fair. So I guess the review must have some value though not to my taste.
  2:42am
Brian in UK:

Joe, I can remember the Pirates as they were called. Radios Caroline, London, City etc just off the Essex coast in South East England. There was a pretty dire film recently by all accounts about this era.
  2:44am
Joe McG:

@TomB: Yes, RH remade "Destiny Street" recently. @Brian: Yes, I saw that movie. It was rotten!
  2:47am
Matt from Springfield:

Beautiful Jaim! The orchestra in the backing track reminds me so much of the Bryter Layter orchestra (in 1970).

Sagittarius! You sure know how to transition tracks Joe!
  2:48am
Brian in UK:

That was where John Peel got his first break in this country. I think he was pioneering the freeform style overhere. It was a lonely furrow though.
It'll be UK Nirvana next, Pentecost Hotel?
  2:49am
Joe McG:

I just finished reading "Margrave of the Marshes," his very funny and sweet autobiography, finished by his wife. I love Peel!
  2:53am
Brian in UK:

Used to tape his shows on a reel to reel. Ustad Viliat Khan to Hall & Oats. Where are the tapes now? Amazing how he was always thinking that the sack was imminent.
  2:56am
Matt from Springfield:

The Hubbels remind me of The New Main Street Singers from "A Mighty Wind"!
  2:56am
Joe McG:

I know! I love that about him.
  2:59am
Brian in UK:

Sleep well. Y'all.
