Listener comments!

  12:07am
12539:

These yipyips are never satisfied with the radio...until Joe's program starts.
  12:10am
Joe McG:

And here I am. Hey, 12539!
  12:17am
Holly in NC:

*Arrows*!!!!! My night (morning?) is now complete!
  12:19am
Joe McG:

Well, all right. My work is done here!
  12:21am
12539:

But please do keep spinning records anyway, Joe.
  12:21am
Joe McG:

Your time has come...TODAY.
  12:23am
Holly in NC:

Oh wow...
  12:24am
Matt from Springfield:

Hey Joe!
Wow indeed! I tuned in about 2 minutes ago and I'm still speechless. Am I listening to Irwin's show??!
  12:26am
Joe McG:

@Gary: I'm standing on the seat with my arms out right now. @Matt: Flattery will get you everywhere.
  12:28am
Matt from Springfield:

And "Bubble Pop: 20 UK Pop Oddities"!! I HAVE that! Although I'm checking my iTunes and the artist was recorded as "Re Del" for "Motorbike Annie".

Still great though, and still reekin' of early 70s Brit rock vocals!
  12:28am
Irwin:

Surface noise is an emerging market. I'm invested.
  12:30am
Matt from Springfield:

I also couldn't help but notice I missed Iron Cross' "Little Bit O' Soul" -- I recognize that! You put it on Single File Vol 1 premium!

(awed gasp) Was that...the ORIGINAL 45 you digitized for the CD?? (drops to knees, sits on feet and humbly wais, bowing head)
  12:30am
Joe McG:

God bless ya, sir.
  12:32am
Matt from Springfield:

@Irwin: Surface Noise at any speed for you; but for now, you and the Codger take the 78s, Joe here shall take the 45s!
  12:32am
Holden Caulfield:

Are you really Irwin Chusid, WFMU DJ listening in late at night?? Or you just some kind of phony?!
I HATE phonies!!
  12:34am
Holden Caulfield:

People who want to stand out and be unique, just end up bein' phonies themselves when they kill people and say I inspired them to do it. I ain't into organized religion but man, I kinda know how Jesus must feel...
  12:35am
Matt from Springfield:

Daniel Blumin! Hope you get some tasty beverage and burgerage! (Or another choice of great foodage!)
  12:39am
Joe McG:

Best thing about Holden Caulfield: He says "crumby." With the B.
  12:40am
Chop Scott:

JOE-

I'm with you Brother, and listening!
  12:42am
Holly in NC:

@Holden -
If there's ever another war, I'm going to sit right the hell on top of it.
You terrific liar!
  12:42am
Joe McG:

Chop Scott! Always great to "see" you!
  12:44am
Matt from Springfield:

Joe, since you seem to be playing some songs I already have tonight, you announce what you're going to play, and I'll listen to it in iTunes!

Nah, the sound quality is probably too high and the scratchiness too low in my sound files. Never mind--play on!
  12:45am
Joe McG:

@Matt: Tonight is my iTunes special.
  12:47am
Matt from Springfield:

I have right now 10957 "items" in my iTunes -- with your good tastes I'm sure at least 5% of our items are exactly the same!
  12:50am
Matt from Springfield:

Is this Ikebe Shakedown music 70s African? I would have guess 60s/70s Latin jazz, but it's got a groove on.
  12:50am
Joe McG:

@Matt: I'm not a Five Percenter.
  12:52am
Joe McG:

Ikebe Shakedown is a new band, b'lieve it or not, from Brooklyn. Revivalists, but good ones.
  12:52am
Holly in NC:

Nice! (Ikebe Shakedown). Was just revisiting Ubiquity's Pharaohs reissues earlier today, also wonderful.
  12:53am
cheri:

hiya joe--- good show so far tonight,,,did you bring any nancy sinatra tonight??
  12:54am
Matt from Springfield:

@Joe: VERY good ones! I dig!
Did you listen to the KUSF DJs in Exile on Billy Jam this Friday? 5 minutes before the end, they play Lady MILLIE JACKSON singing Bad Company's "Feel Like Makin' Love"! Have you ever heard that before? Could just be better than the original!
  12:55am
Joe McG:

I played her version with Isaac Hayes a few weeks ago!
  12:58am
Matt from Springfield:

I see "Feels Like The First Time", I think I remember that one. Are there other duets with them on that "Royal Rappin's" album?
  12:59am
Joe McG:

Yeah, the whole album is duets. It's excellent!
  1:00am
cheri:

i guess we don't hear any nancy s. tonight huh joe??
  1:00am
Holly in NC:

swoon
  1:02am
Matt from Springfield:

@Authentic Phony: I can't find a specific, single number like I was taught in economics, but it seems the general consensus on the Interwebs is that any company with a market share above 70% is effectively a monopoly, whether legal or not. So I say yes, iTunes probably is a monopoly for online music track sales due to its ubiquity and focus on the popular iPod player.
  1:03am
12539:

So does that mean wfmu has a monopoly on good radio?
  1:04am
Matt from Springfield:

@12539: Oh I dunno, do you hear any OTHER radio right now!!
  1:08am
J:

there's OTHER radio?
  1:09am
J:

I only buy from Itunes when some of the artists decide to make their stuff ONLY available on there.
  1:09am
Holly in NC:

Sadly must retire for the evening. This is a really fantastic show - looking forward to the archive. Thank you, Joe!
  1:10am
Matt from Springfield:

@J: Yes, but listen at your own risk. We'll leave the light on for you here.
@Joe: Bizarre. Did Dr. Death release this album, or did the Morpheus Quintet just sample his spoken word into the tracks?
  1:12am
Matt from Springfield:

@Holly: Good night! Thanks for joining us!

Well, if something does exist, WFMU WILL play it! Thanks for this unusual jazz/spoken word, Joe!
  1:12am
Joe McG:

@Holly: G'night and sleep well! @Matt: I'm responsible for the sloppy drop-ins!
  1:13am
cheri:

btw joe when does the summer schedule come up?
  1:13am
J:

niiiiice
  1:13am
Matt from Springfield:

Oh, so did you do a "live mix" of the two then?
  1:14am
J:

I don't mind sloppy drop-ins, except I have to get the mop when they'e left
  1:14am
Joe McG:

I did! New frontiers, Matt, new frontiers! @J: I was asking for it. Glad you gave it to me!
  1:15am
J:

@Joe McGas-Can I live to serve
  1:15am
cheri:

i have to head out myself joe,,, but please play some nancy sinatra thnx joe i'll be listening!
  1:17am
Matt from Springfield:

@Joe: New frontiers! Sloppy drop-ins could become another "thing" of yours, whenever you are so inspired! I thought you did a swell job! To new frontiers! (Bourbon 'n Coke tonight, so I raise that glass to ya!)
  1:18am
J:

Damnit where's MY bourbon...all I gots is rum
  1:18am
Holly in NC:

OK - deep cut Entwistle is genius.
You're making it hard for me to go to bed! And I really can't not stay up for Dream Syndicate. Drat you!
  1:19am
Joe McG:

:)
  1:19am
J:

There will be no sleeping when Joe is captain of the Band De FM
  1:22am
Matt from Springfield:

@J: Whatever you got, take a swig and enjoy it! You can even add it to cola like myself if you wish!
  1:24am
J:

@Matt I certainly will. No wine, no roses, and I'm even out of cider, but at least I've got half a bottle of yo ho ho rum
  1:25am
#K:

hey hi hello JM! I'm sleepy but I want to send you my regards from brookland.
  1:25am
Matt from Springfield:

Joe, I was just thinking of how I like the Calypso song about "Brooklyn, where de tree grows" -- I thought I heard that on Irwin's show, but someone pointed out how it was actually YOU last year who introduced me to that! The Calypsonian was "Lord Invader", pretty good...
  1:26am
Holly in NC:

Though, Joe, a sick person such as myself would've _also_ played Entwistle's 'Love Is a Heart Attack" in the last set... you're obviously a better person than me !
  1:27am
Joe McG:

Great idea, Holly, I wish I'd thought of it! Hey, #K! So nice to hear from you as always, from the Land of Brook.
  1:28am
Matt from Springfield:

...I say this because when looking up Lord Invader, I found he actually released the original, baudy version of "Rum and Coca Cola"; but because it was considered vulgar, and Black Caribbean, radio wouldn't play it--on the ground that "Coca Cola" was a trademark! But when The Andrews Sisters recorded a "cleaned" version of it, suddenly that was A-OK!...That sort of crap is just one reason why I'm glad we have WFMU!
  1:30am
Matt from Springfield:

...The Beatles "Come Together" was considered an aggressive, "jungle" beat at the time, and likewise the presence of "Coca Cola" was also used as the excuse for not playing it on commercial radio!
  1:31am
12539:

We all know how Coca Cola hates getting its name mentioned in the media.
  1:32am
J:

Kinks had to change Coca-Cola to Cherry Cola for Lola too
  1:33am
Matt from Springfield:

@12539: LOL, really.
@J: "Cherry cola" was on the single that was the most radio played, the album had the original "Coca". I've heard both on the radio, so you can tell which version they're playing. I myself have both, being a completist.
  1:35am
Matt from Springfield:

LENE!!! I bought her record "Stateless" a few weeks ago at my local record store for a buck! (Slight "surface noise"!) It has this song on it!

The clerk also told me an interesting tidbit about her "sorid, lesbian affair with Nina Hagen" that I wasn't aware of! The two apparently produced each others music for a while...
  1:36am
Matt from Springfield:

The "hammond organ" is evidently played by Nick Plytas, the "polyphonic synthesiser" (I guess that's what the swoony sound was) is played by Jeff Smith.
  1:37am
J:

@Matt my Kinks collection can beat up your Kinks collection
  1:38am
Joe McG:

@ Matt, you're a national resource. @Matt and J; The true test is if you have "Percy."
  1:39am
Matt from Springfield:

@J: Oh, BRING IT!
Actually I have some LPs, and many MP3s, but few of their complete albums in any format--you may top me on that. I know one of my friends totally beats me up on the Kinks front!
  1:39am
J:

Congratulations, Joe Mc-Gasket your show is the first to play on my spiffy new laptop
  1:39am
J:

I have Percy on vinyl and CD
  1:40am
Joe McG:

Thanks, man! I sound better on laptops.
  1:40am
J:

I have Ray's Around the world in 80 days demos. I have severe Kinkitis. It's chronic but not fatal.
  1:41am
J:

Next time I see you, Joe, i will smack you (hard) for calling me Man ;)
  1:41am
Matt from Springfield:

Wow, that IS impressive J!
It's there between "Lola versus Powerman and the Moneygoround, Part One" and "Muswell Hillbillies", but not so known. I didn't even know about that till you mentioned it! I'll have to ask Julie if she has that...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Percy_(soundtrack)
  1:42am
Joe McG:

@J:Thanks, Woman, I mean! :)
  1:43am
J:

Great stuff on Percy. I've even seen the movie
  1:44am
Julie:

problem with new laptop it's as if someone has moved all the freaking KEYS around
  1:44am
Joe McG:

I've never seen the movie. Is it worth seeing? It sounds nuts (ha ha).
  1:45am
Julie:

It's all right. I like Hywel Bennett who stars in it
  1:46am
Julie:

ooooh grrrrreat cover
  1:46am
Matt from Springfield:

Whoa, I tried to look up "Chuck Barris", and it says he was the host of "The Gong Show" and "The Dating Game". Is that the SAME one?! If so he totally kicks Richard Dawson's ass when it comes to game show hosts' music releases!
  1:48am
Julie:

I think I would enjoy a pure food and drug act right about now, how about you folks?
  1:48am
Joe McG:

@Matt: Yep, that's the very Chuck Barris, Matt. He was a songwriter and producer of music as well as game shows.
  1:49am
Julie:

I wonder if when he plays things like this..Joe stands up and shakes his McG-ASS to it
  1:49am
Julie:

He was CIA yanno :D
  1:49am
Matt from Springfield:

@Julie: Yes, this Pure Food and Drug Act is so great! Doesn't keep our food and medicine safe from contamination like the 1906 law, but musically, it definitely kicks the law's ass!
  1:49am
Julie:

@matt good grief how do you know the year of the law?
  1:50am
Joe McG:

@Julie: Sorry, you are missing the visual accompaniment to this song. BUMP!
  1:50am
Matt from Springfield:

@Julie: Sometimes he admits he does shake it--and Daniel B. apparently shakes it even more when Joe's in the house!
  1:50am
Julie:

ah hell when I was changing computers I missed Lene lovich..

@Matt I have seen Joe dance..and it is most awesome.
  1:52am
Another John:

I think it's time for summer madness. Please?
  1:52am
Julie:

I just found an old case of 45's in my storage. One of those round twist off tops. I can't imagine what's inside or the condition.
  1:52am
Matt from Springfield:

Marianne Faithfull's "Broken English"!!!!
This is a classic I first heard on my 1984 "WHFS" tape! Total re-invention, but Marianne did it well for the New Wave era.
  1:52am
cheri:

hiya julie---hope you're having a great weekend,,,ohhh i saw mama mia in broadway julie!
  1:54am
Julie:

You know I think all I know of this song is the covers..
  1:54am
Julie:

I am having a weekend.
  1:55am
Matt from Springfield:

That "Broken English" is shorter than the versions I know--the 45 must be a shortened version.
  1:56am
?:

well i just wanted to say hello julie,,,g'night,,,see you soon!!!
  1:56am
Joe McG:

Yeah, Matt, it's an edit.
  1:56am
Julie:

goodnight
  1:58am
Matt from Springfield:

It's early Julie! At least hang around to the end of Single File!
But we're all glad you came to this party again!
Goodnight!
  1:59am
Julie:

oh i was saying goodnight to Cheri
  2:00am
Matt from Springfield:

Yay! You're still here then! Nevermind!
  2:00am
Julie:

i am waiting for good firefox installation music
  2:00am
12539:

Time to hit my sleep button. Thanks Joe! See you in the archive.
  2:01am
Matt from Springfield:

Yes, the Kevin Ayers bed music goes GREAT with an installation progress bar advancing! At least I think so.

Goodnight 12539!
  2:02am
Julie:

I dig the hippie chick on the front page
  2:03am
Julie:

what kinda version?
  2:03am
Julie:

haha I'm playin ayers this week...never heard of him before Fabio. I do like this BG
  2:04am
Julie:

I'm happy now. Happiness in explorer is not possible.
  2:06am
Matt from Springfield:

Stiff Records was absolutely fabulous in promotional materials. I read about one of theirs that ranks as possibly my favorite ad tagline EVER: "If it ain't Stiff, it ain't worth a fuck!"
  2:07am
Julie:

was 12539 a robot? Is that why the sleep button?
  2:07am
Adam in Portland:

That Dick Cavett interview with Sly Stone was such a mind-blower.
  2:07am
Julie:

@matt sounds like a cialis ad
  2:08am
Matt from Springfield:

Yes, I remember R.L. Stine's books; the "Goosebumps" series and the like. Not terrifying type horror, but looking back I admit the plots were well-developed and age appropriate for elementary school students.
@Julie: Shhhh, don't give them ideas!
  2:08am
Julie:

hiii daniel
  2:10am
Julie:

CHURCH!!!
  2:11am
Adam in Portland:

I used to tape Dr. Demento shows. Haha.
  2:11am
Matt from Springfield:

The Church are my guys! Really great live the past several times I saw them.
  2:13am
Matt from Springfield:

"B. A. Robertson (born Brian Alexander Robertson, 12 September 1956, Glasgow) is a Scottish musician, actor, composer and songwriter." More to follow...
  2:13am
Julie:

I used to tape all kinds of stuff off the radio. @Matt they were on WNYC not long ago.
  2:14am
Julie:

VW bus?
  2:15am
Adam in Portland:

@Julie: I used to make pause tapes using LL Cool J's Radio album. Ha!
  2:16am
Julie:

composer AND songwriter
  2:16am
Matt from Springfield:

"Robertson has regularly written songs with Mike Rutherford for Rutherford's band Mike + The Mechanics, including their hits "Silent Running" and "The Living Years". The latter was written after Robertson's father died twelve weeks before the birth of his own son, and was nominated for a Grammy Award for Song of the Year in 1990.

Robertson also wrote "We Have a Dream" for the 1982 World Cup Scotland squad and played the lead in the movie Living Apart Together, directed by Charlie Gormley. In 1983 Robertson, along with co-songwriters Terry Britten and Sue Shifrin, won a Razzie Award for the Worst 'Original' Song for "Pumpin' and Blowin'" as featured in the 1982 film, The Pirate Movie."
  2:17am
Julie:

Pumpin and blowin? I Didn't know pirate movie was porno
  2:18am
Matt from Springfield:

"The Living Years" was that generic-y "uplifting" 80s song you can still hear on soft rock and store PA mixes, so our B.A. Robertson is probably rakin' in the dough from royalties still.
  2:18am
Julie:

this is terrific, joe!
  2:18am
D. Blumin:

Mike & The Mechanics??? Hurray, Joe! Ask and ye shall receive!
  2:20am
Julie:

Daniel, tell me it was a VW bus
  2:23am
Julie:

COWBOY? That's the BEST he could come up with, COWBOY?
  2:23am
Joe McG:

Surface Noise: Your home for Mike + the Mechanics.
  2:25am
Julie:

I don't think that's a GOOD thing, Joe
  2:26am
Joe McG:

A whole untapped audience awaits.
  2:26am
Matt from Springfield:

In a way, the minimalist "Cowboy", instead of "Cowboy Slim" or what have you, was probably NOT taken at the time.
@Joe: Puh-leeze! I rank Mike + the Mechanics below Squeeze and Ace for bands Paul Carrack has sung for. (And Roxy Music, according to Wiki? Did he sing after Bryan F. left or something? Must check out...)
  2:26am
Julie:

I think the visual for Surface noise should be sandpaper
  2:28am
Matt from Springfield:

Sandpaper rustles like surface noise...
So would Kenny G's visual be an ice pick through a listeners' ear? Or maybe a part blue, part pink sport coat? ;)
  2:28am
Julie:

I would not want to tap that audience as much as beat them with a scratchy stick.
  2:29am
Julie:

@Matt I was his board op last go-round..talk about trial by fire.... But it's hard not to like the guy :)
  2:29am
Matt from Springfield:

@Julie: Actually did you engineer any Kenny G shows before last summer? His ones last summer I don't think were too bad--when given 3 hours Kenny really went off on abusing the audience (see: last December's show)!
  2:30am
Julie:

Nice....Magnolia @Matt no that stuff was LIVE. I was merely a listener.
  2:31am
D. Blumin:

Julie, It was a Chevy Astrovan! Full of sandpaper and sheepskin on the interior...
  2:32am
Julie:

@D as long it was BIG and not some crappy minivan.
  2:32am
Matt from Springfield:

I like the man as well! In fact he's one of 4 WFMU personalities who made an impact on me before I even started listening to the station (he created UbuWeb, and through it linked me up with a lot of avant-garde and experimental art and spoken word, which he also plays).
  2:33am
Julie:

I've been bad about exploring Ubuweb.
  2:37am
coelacanth:

Thank you Joe for playing Cowboy &not the predictably lame Eric Crapton version that's better known...It sounded different, though than a version on a Dwayne Allman anthology. Maybe Dwayne played on Cowboy's demo?
  2:38am
D. Blumin:

It was beat up and had a seat for passengers that wasn't attached to the floor or anything. Fun times! Kinda like an Ubu Web on wheels...
  2:38am
Matt from Springfield:

Here's the answer:
"In 1977 Ace disbanded, and Carrack began working as a backing musician for Frankie Miller. Subsequently, he was a member of Roxy Music, playing keyboards on their 1979 reunion album Manifesto. Carrack would also play on the next two Roxy Music albums, but as a session musician, not a band member."
  2:38am
Matt from Springfield:

Hey coelacanth!
Been a while since I've "seen" you!
  2:39am
Joe McG:

@coelacanth: No problem. Yes, Duane is on the Cowboy demo, you guessed it! Cowboy actually used to be the 31st of February, who recorded a great LP for Vanguard that I sometimes play.
  2:40am
Julie:

@D damn! I haven't been in a van since I was a teenager. Good times.
  2:40am
Julie:

we need a beatup WFMU band to drive all over the country
  2:41am
Julie:

every time I listen to an FMU show I realize how little I know about stuff
  2:41am
Julie:

oh speaking of STUFF @D check your mailbox
  2:41am
Matt from Springfield:

@Dan Blumin: Yes, an UbuWeb on wheels if Kerouac made his journey in the 60s/70s VW Bus era!
@Joe: I like the 31st of February! Thanks for making the connections!
  2:42am
Julie:

@Matt I just read Kerouac. I think perhaps I was too girlie for that book, though it need stir my road trip urges
  2:43am
Matt from Springfield:

The VW Bus is technically the Volkswagen "Transporter" Type 1. All other VW vans after are a type of Transporter.
@Julie: Never read Kerouac, is the narrative garbled, or is it engaging and possible to follow?
  2:44am
Julie:

@Matt honestly it took me a long time to get into it..and then it was over..haha. I think it was impossible to live up to the expectations I had from the reputation of it.
  2:45am
Julie:

MOTHRA!!!
  2:46am
Matt from Springfield:

@Julie: Maybe I'll open a copy at a bookstore and see if it's worth pursuing...

Though when I was in San Fran I shopped at City Lights Books, where many of the Beat generation actually did go to in the past and did readings of their stuff!
  2:46am
Julie:

wow http://www.godzillamonstermusic.com/godzilla17.htm
  2:47am
Julie:

there's a freakin 10 cd box set
  2:48am
Julie:

@Matt his writing style is..wordy...Maybe it was indicative of the times? But I did like some of the more beat expressions he used
  2:48am
coelacanth:

Hey Matt. Yes i usually listen on airwaves and only turn my computer on a couple times a week.so...i've been here. Just not HERE. ...Joe,would that be "5'll Get You 10"(which i've never heard)?
  2:50am
Julie:

oh no it's almost time for joe to go
  2:50am
Matt from Springfield:

No Osama, Yes Obama and Yes Osanna.
That's a pretty nice situation to me!
  2:52am
Brian in UK:

Not too late am I?
  2:54am
Matt from Springfield:

April 25 2010 to last week indicates the magic number of 55 (3 hour) episodes--or 165 hours! If you miss Joe, you can listen to him CONTINUOUSLY until he comes on again! He passed that magic number a long time ago!
  2:55am
Matt from Springfield:

@Brian: Always glad to have you here, even if it's just a check in!
  2:55am
Julie:

ACK
  2:55am
coelacanth:

(oops. misspelled Duane TWICE. Sorry Duane.)
  2:56am
Julie:

@Matt you are a funny cat
  2:56am
Julie:

@joe you need to sing this for hoof n mouth
  2:57am
Matt from Springfield:

@Julie: Thanks, I strive to be "the cat's meow" in humor!
  2:57am
Julie:

@Matt who says I meant funny haha :)
  2:58am
Matt from Springfield:

Awww! Burn! Mrroww!
  2:59am
Julie:

Oh man joe that was awful. Everything in Italian is just like it looks.
  2:59am
coelacanth:

Thanks Joe! Ciao.
  3:00am
Matt from Springfield:
