Street interviews, listener call-ins, vinyl gluttery, sporadic normalcy, original floperas and fiktion, blatant talking over songs, politix, tenderness, and a vague undercurrent of angst. Right up your alley!

Listener comments!

  3:09am
other david:

Morning Clay, nice start to the show :)

Julie instructed us to remind you it's Ray Davies birthday...
  3:12am
Clay:

Hi David and all ... just getting things in order here. Yes. Kinks. It will be addressed.
  3:16am
Clay:

dark knight
  3:22am
Kevin:

godmorgon from sweden
  3:22am
Steve:

Hey Clay, thanks for the fill-in!
  3:22am
other david:

8:20 over this side of the atlantic :)

really perfect start to the show - no failing Clay, trust me!

I'm surprised not to see Fabio on the playlist complimenting your tracks
  3:23am
Max W:

I'm listening in CA, Clay! While animating stop-motion puppets...
  3:24am
Max W:

PS - I dont like Fabio, he stinks
  3:26am
Clay:

Good to hear from you all. A little nervous for some reason.
  3:37am
other david:

No need to be nervous Clay, great music so far and helping me get ready to face the day :)

The station building must be a strange place for you at this time of night
  3:39am
Clay:

Thanks David. The lighting in here is surgical tonight.
  3:44am
Max W:

LA, CA, that's where i am right now
  3:45am
Clay:

Franklin and Highland, man.
  3:47am
DMcK:

Totally with ya Clay
  3:49am
DMcK:

ooh this is my favorite part
  4:00am
Matt from Springfield:

Morning Clay! Though it's probably late night for you!

So THAT'S Starcastle! That's really good prog, the Triumvirate/Triad keeps mentioning your taste in them, but didn't know them until now!
  4:03am
(mta) Tony:

Matt: check out Starcastle's "Lady of the Lake" from their self-titled album, thanks to Clay for the turn on. Nice to see you with us again tonight. Hi Clay.
  4:07am
Matt from Springfield:

Hey Tony! I certainly will. On Julie's show she plays quite a bit of prog and 60s albums to balance out the Dark Wave; I think Julie had said she would play Starcastle for Clay one day, or else she referred to this fill-in, for him to play Starcastle for her.
  4:09am
Max W:

I didn't know the amazing Neil Peart wrote books!
  4:13am
other david:

Clay, you never cease to make me smile - brilliant radio. Nice caller too.
  4:14am
hamburger:

nice surprise fill in for the morning dusty :)
  4:17am
Clay:

Hi Matt, Max, thanks David, ham!
  4:17am
Matt from Springfield:

Clay, this is a nice one for us Julie regulars!
  4:20am
jehovah in LA:

agree with david, no need to be nervous (ever) and just be your bad self. you got fanzzz.
  4:21am
Matt from Springfield:

Oh Clay! Combination of Dark Night and Clay Pigeon--you know I'm gonna check in!
  4:21am
Bas, NL:

Clay! Good morning!
  4:22am
other david:

Just for tonight.... Goth Pigeon or... Clay Bat...
  4:25am
Matt from Springfield:

Yeah david! Or, Dusty Night!
Morning Bas!
  4:29am
Bas, NL:

Hi Matt, hi Other David! He, he.. Well, Clay's my favorite poly-filler-inner...
  4:30am
Matt from Springfield:

Re: unemployed men vs. women, on the whole it's because the male-dominated sectors, like manufacturing and industrial--just aren't around anymore. In this caller's case it's interesting because graphic artists are usually contract-based, and tend to be out of work more frequently. But in this Recession they might not be getting replacement contracts like they used to.
  4:32am
Matt from Springfield:

Poly-filler-inner, Clay the Chameleon Multi-talent, everyone's pal!
  4:34am
other david:

Hey Bas! Matt - I think you've got that spot on.

Right, I don't want to, but have to pop out for an hour - should be back for the last part of the show. Behave for Clay guys! :)
  4:38am
pierre:

Bonjour Clay !
  4:41am
Matt from Springfield:

"Horrible" sax player? For a rock sax player Clarence was very good, playing more than just adornments to songs, he was punchy, he soloed strong and supported the songs themselves. He was no Miles Davis but that's a whole different set of music. His solo albums were apparently panned, but you got to give credit for Clarence's E Street work.
  4:42am
Matt from Springfield:

Bonjour Pierre!
Are you able to listen in today?
  4:49am
Yaniv from Israel:

Enjoying the show here in Tel aviv
  4:49am
Matt from Springfield:

The Magic of Clay! The caller didn't want to talk on the Air, then "just for a minute", now you managed to get him on for a half-hour, reaching out the way we love you for!
  4:51am
pierre:

@ Matt : not really, but i'm tuning in as soon as can soon be
  4:53am
Matt from Springfield:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Witch_(band)
Pretty good, reminds me of Mott The Hoople. A nice relic from your Tampa past.

But I graduated AFTER 2000, and we STILL don't have cities on Uranus, or signals that get you high!
  4:53am
Daniel T from Copenhagen:

Halløj fra Danmark!
  4:54am
Matt from Springfield:

Hello Yaniv! Yair Yona from Tel Aviv is a good friend of WFMU and comments on several shows, but it's always nice to get more people listening in!
  4:56am
Clay:

Good to hear from all of you. We all miss Julie.
  4:59am
Mr. Unpleasant:

Greetings from the mountains of Montana. I enjoyed last winter in the Bronx, up by East Kings bridge Avenue. Looking forward to getting back to the City when I can afford to do so.
  5:01am
Matt from Springfield:

Summer Solstice.
Let me check the exact time...
  5:01am
(mta) Tony:

Mr. Unpleasant: It's "Kingsbridge Road."
  5:03am
Daniel T from Copenhagen:

Cool. I actually happen to be half-German and half-Finnish, but living in Denmark.
  5:05am
hamburger:

woa - this sounds like a soundtrack to something I've heard...
  5:05am
Mr. Unpleasant:

Yeah, I know. My bad. And the exact solstice time is (from an online almanac) 1:16PM EDT.
  5:05am
Matt from Springfield:

Summer Solstice, June 21 (today), UTC 17:16, which is at 1:16 pm in the Eastern Daylight Time zone. So toast summer at that time!

"Abelskaeven"! Or however you spell it...I KNOW those, a Finnish friend's dad made those! They're delicious for breakfast, an egg-shaped rut for frying a cardomom pancake, for lack of a better word.
  5:08am
Matt from Springfield:

Didn't know you were Danish. I remember Dana College (in Nebraska) being named for the Danes around that area who established it. Now, when I went to look up it's location, I found it folded last year...
  5:11am
hamburger:

(gosh I'm not with it... *something I've -seen-) :)
  5:12am
Daniel T from Copenhagen:

Danes usually eat warm æbleskiver with jam and powder sugar in the winter time.
  5:12am
Clay:

Welkommen!
  5:14am
Daniel T from Copenhagen:

Tak. :-)
  5:14am
Matt from Springfield:

Thanks Daniel T! That does sound GOOD on a chilly winter morning!

How interesting how many commenters on right now know of "æbleskiver". We should start "The (Danish) Breakfast Club"!
  5:18am
hamburger:

I'm half danish! (though I know not a word of it apart from 'tak' :3
  5:18am
Matt from Springfield:

(blush) Thanks Clay!
Give credit to Mr. Unpleasant--we're technically tied, but my long-winded elaborations allowed other people to seek out the answers--searching yourself can often be MORE valuable! :)
  5:20am
Matt from Springfield:

Google Language Tools is a godsend, and only improves with user-submitted corrections. Anyway, "æbleskiver" comes out as "fritters"! Makes sense. And "æble skiver" comes out as "apple slices". So good to know!
  5:21am
(mta) Tony:

Nobody's calling Clay, so play Long Way To Love by Britny Fox.
  5:22am
Mr. Unpleasant:

Hey, Clay! Oh, yeah, but beautiful prairies cover most of the state. The finest of summer can be found here in the Northern Rockies. It's getting nice here now.
  5:23am
hamburger:

gosh I'd love to hear what goes through clay pigeon's head when he wakes up in the morning :)
  5:25am
other david:

woop, made it back in one piece. what did I miss?
  5:26am
Matt from Springfield:

You're back other david! The caller finished spilling what's on his mind, and a lot of talk about Danish stuff :)
  5:30am
other david:

Ah, the magic of Clay indeed - the guy was going to hang up when he realised he was on the air and Clay kept him on for half an hour, brilliant :D

Hm, I knew I should have bought a Danish pastry on the way back from town
  5:30am
Matt from Springfield:

Actually Clay, I like your "velocity" running low, because you're filling in for a late night show and must announce with your late night voice. Julie talks with her "afternoon chirpy" voice on your show, and her lovely "Helllllo there!" voice heard 'round the world on Dark Night.
  5:32am
Matt from Springfield:

Oooh, self-hypnosis LPs! I must seek those out! I have a double LP set of Alan Watts meditations from 1969, but this is also too good to pass up!
  5:34am
Mr. Unpleasant:

I still want my half-n-half in my coffee. Mmmm...
  5:35am
Marmalade Kitty:

Good morning Clay! & all! I just remembered, no Julies show. Good to hear you Clay :)
  5:36am
Daniel T from Copenhagen:

The record ain't working, 'cos I'm leaving for lunch.
  5:36am
Clay:

Good Morning Marmalade.
  5:39am
other david:

I've always wondered what would happen if a hypnotist got someone completely relaxed but then suddenly started screaming wildly.

I mean.. I was half expecting Dr. Dante to do just that. This is why hypnosis will never work on me.. I'll keep one eye open..
  5:39am
other david:

Morning Ms. Kitty
  5:40am
Marmalade Kitty:

20+ hours with no sleep, clay? careful if you're driving BIG coffee! ;)
  5:42am
Matt from Springfield:

That bit about Abraham sacrificing his son reminded me of the old album you mixed in your show last week: "Famous Theatre Company with the Hollywood Studio Orchestra" do the Old Testament. Did people actually buy those LPs, sit in their dens and listen intently? To me it's just too funny!
  5:44am
(mta) Tony:

Matt: You must check out Final Relaxation by the Golding Institute. I hope you check out the tracks I recommend, Matt; they're worth it!
  5:45am
Marmalade Kitty:

John Dalton bass, not station John Dalton..
  5:46am
Marmalade Kitty:

(post P Quaife)
  5:46am
Matt from Springfield:

Wishbone Ash's drummer was Steve Upton for most of their history; also Ray Weston, Mike Sturgis and Joseph Crabtree since the late 80s.

@Tony: I'm catching up on Amazon orders RIGHT NOW, I'm actually on my way to buying, once I sample a track!
  5:47am
david from ks:

Help save the planet, revitalize the soil with ground river rock Azomite is sold in most all states [cheap and it works] and plant a tree,,, global freezing is so near,,,sorry i know itz not relevant to the show, but i gotta try.
  5:48am
Matt from Springfield:

Good morning Marmalade Kitty!
I've been a busy commenter, but Clay should check out these important messages about driving while tired!

  5:48am
(mta) Tony:

Matt: That's funny; I do the same thing. Tonight, I got the Van Halen I was missing, thanks to Clay.
  5:49am
hamburger:

JANET! that's how much I don't want Styx :)
  5:49am
other david:

Rock and a hard place.

Styx
  5:50am
Matt from Springfield:

"Bob Henrit (born Robert John Henrit, 2 May 1944, Broxbourne, Hertfordshire) is an English drummer who has been a member of several musical groups, including Buster Meikle & The Daybreakers, The Hunters, Unit 4 + 2, The Roulettes, Argent and The Kinks." Also, The Daybreakers was apparently Russ Ballard's band with his brother Roy.

Styx is more your thing, this Janet wouldn't be out of place on Julie's show, so great fusion of tastes!
  5:51am
Marmalade Kitty:

Yes, Matt PublicInFormationFilm! :)
  5:51am
?:

Nice to hear you in the dead of the morning Mr. Pigeon
  5:51am
Matt from Springfield:

Good Lord, Tony! LOL, someone's cast his vote! :)
  5:56am
Matt from Springfield:

Rare Earth, covering The Temps again! My Dad once saw them live.
  5:56am
Andy:

From Bristol in the UK: I thought you meant drumsticks not Styx- damn thought we were in for an impromptu drumming session from your good-self...
  5:57am
Clay:

Always Remember ... Julie
  5:57am
other david:

great show Dusty, thanks for the smiles
  5:58am
other david:

Dusty Show... show dusty... hmm.. *ponders going back to bed*
  5:58am
Matt from Springfield:

WFMU's Id, as someone once called you, Clay. Going from White Witch to Van Halen to Frank Sinatra without batting an eye! Always enthused, always friendly! A versatile chameleon, rolling with the tides and filling in for just about ANY show here! It's been a fun and wild ride tonight, thanks Clay!
  5:59am
Jeff In Hawaii:

Thanks Dusty!
