there really isn't a theme! Not throughout anyway
  3:26am

  3:31am
fred von helsing:

So the theme is... semirandom Juliematic? :)
  3:32am
Julie:

yes I suppose so!
  3:41am

But maybe romance is a big part of that de toute façon

Matt from Springfield:

Hi Julie!
Great stereo mix for Last July! And the photo of the Purple Turtle (that maroon-magenta! I must find the RGB code for it!)
  4:13am
Julie:

@Matt glad you approve..I had a friend work tirelessly on it!
  4:16am
Matt from Springfield:

Wonderful thing, a good audio mix. And yes, ALL of my lights are off for this music! Just this monitor!!
  4:19am
other david:

Yep recording sounds great

I think waking up to goth suits my general early morning mood perfectly :)
  4:20am
Julie:

@OD start your day dancing in the dark
  4:20am
Sam:

Me too! Although it is daylight here. But it's rainy and dark-soulish outside.
  4:21am
Julie:

@Sam are you in the UK?
  4:21am
pierre:

Bonjour Julie !
How are you, did you rest a little bit after the Clay Vs Fabio ?
(Bonjour listeners, for those who didn't listen the last "Strength trough failure" featured the best dj battle referee in a long time…)
  4:22am
Julie:

Bonjour Pierre! We were all wiped out, that's for sure!
  4:23am
Matt from Springfield:

Me three other david! I am NOT a morning person...something between Bauhaus, Children of Bodom and Dead Kennedys for me! :)
  4:24am
other david:

Sam, same as I'm in Ireland. This would be even better in the dark winter mornings... granted it's bloody grim here today anyway
  4:26am
Julie:

Bloody Grim..that's a good show title
  4:26am
Matt from Springfield:

Bonjour Pierre! That was a great DJ battle! They tried to veto Julie's records, but she had a lot of commenters to back her up!
  4:28am
Julie:

I was liking that so much I nearly started to clap
  4:29am
fred von helsing:

DJ Battle http://www.wfmu.org/playlists/shows/41096
  4:29am
Julie:

but um don't go now :)
  4:30am
Matt from Springfield:

I like Bloody Grim. And a "dark-soulish morning", I know those!

This is a good soundtrack for waking up--I don't listen to the death metal first thing waking up, but if you scream for me to get out of bed, my reaction would be the growl! :)
  4:32am
pierre:

(Julie, your tracks had the right to be there - during battle - as any of Fabio's or Clay's…)
  4:33am
other david:

Matt that list sounds just about right to me :D

Just add in a copious amount of coffee !

Now I'm knocking around idea's for a gritty show called Bloody Grim, featuring goths as private detectives, their HQ shall be above a Purple Turtle.
  4:33am
Sam:

I'm in Paris. Bonjour Pierre.
  4:33am
Julie:

Bloody & Grim, goth detectives
  4:37am
Matt from Springfield:

@pierre: Julie had a fewer songs this time, but a total almost as high--they wanted the attention on themselves! Settling scores from last time! :)

@david: Sounds cool, someday I might be pleasantly surprised to see that on PBS or BBC America!
  4:38am
other david:

"Bloody, we've just got a report that a consignment of white facial cream foundation has been stolen in transit..."
"Damnit, Grim! How can this happen again, let's roll!"

*they hop out the fire escape and into their funeral hearse, driving to the crime scene*
  4:39am
pierre:

Salut Sam !

@ Matt : It is only fair that Julie get to play music, on a soccer pitch, the referee is on the field just like the teams…
  4:40am
other david:

Also, on a less of a tangent I liked that set by Last July :)
  4:40am
Julie:

@OD Yay!
  4:41am
Tim Serpas:

Yup, gonna send a link to the playlist to my gothfriends.
  4:41am
Matt from Springfield:

@pierre I'm glad that you (and others on this board) were insisting on fairness that day! That said everyone brought fun music in--those battles are exhausting, but great to do occasionally.
  4:41am
Julie:

the donna summer might scare them away!
  4:42am
Julie:

I think overall the music was better this time, they weren't trying to out-bad each other like last time
  4:42am
Matt from Springfield:

@david: YES!! You got it!!
And the show "Bloody & Grim" can also earn a cult reputation for playing newer goth bands in the soundtrack, like Last July!
  4:44am
jaycjay:

Yeah, that's a good point. There was at least a period that first time where the goal became trying to top how bad the last selection was, which can be a little funny very briefly but quickly... well, you don't want to hear it. Because it's bad. But that didn't happen last time around. "A" games all around.
  4:46am
david from ks.:

,,,,THIS IS FUN ,,CUZ NOWHERE BUT HERE AND NOW,,,,THROUGH MY FAVORITE ALTEC STUDIO SOUND REPRODUCERS WITH MS.J AND FMU TO HELP PUT IT THERE @3:40amCST in the MORN,,,AMAZING,AMAZING JUST AMAZING,,,,ThankUALL,,d
  4:46am
Matt from Springfield:

Thank you from all of us listeners, Sean!

@JCJ: For example, Clay played "Proud to be an American", predictably getting a lot of negative points! It was funny reading those comments!
  4:46am
Sam:

Heavy rain here today and high only 65 F
  4:47am
pierre:

thank you for that recording Julie
  4:47am
Bas, NL:

Listening in and enjoying the show thoroughly from my workplace!
  4:47am
Julie:

@Sam I'll trade it's in the 90s here. I do not like the hot sun.
  4:50am
Matt from Springfield:

Morning Bas! Glad to see so many across the pond in Europe listen at work just like I do in the States!

Though I'm up early for this--the timestamp you see is actually my time NOW!
  4:52am
Matt from Springfield:

This is a good band, just a bit awkward though to say you like "Kiss The Anus Of A Black Cat"!
  4:53am
jaycjay:

Heh. "Awkward" is putting it mildly!
  4:55am
other david:

Yeah, it's a nice track... and the name - not one you're going to forget!
  4:55am
fred von helsing:

Bark is such a cool album
  4:56am
Julie:

YES! I keep finding new (old) Airplane records
  4:56am
fred von helsing:

is turntable 2 still possessed by evil demons?
  4:57am
Julie:

Hmmm funny that you knew it was turntable 2
  4:58am
fred von helsing:

bwaa-aa-aahhh
  5:00am
Bas, NL:

@Matt f S: Good morning Matt! You're an early worker!!!
  5:00am
Matt from Springfield:

Great 60s stuff, Jefferson and the Cake!
  5:01am
Matt from Springfield:

Whoa--Tori doing EMINEM's Bonnie & Clyde '97??!!
THIS is why we have, this is why we need, WFMU! Obscure but great choice Julie!
  5:01am
listener mark:

Turntable number two has a cover to control the evil spirits. Turntables one and three do not have covers.
  5:02am
Julie:

oh so that's why we have that!
  5:02am
david from ks.:

,,just a bad thought returned,,,i still remember 22degress below zero here in ks in late feb,,,it was the first time the weather got my full and total attention,,,,global freezing is our main concern,,,,Our Only hope is the revitalization of our over acidfied soil and the planting of fast growing trees,,,,itz so much later than we think,,,,,,, i do honestly believe,,,,,,time is short.
  5:02am
Julie:

@Matt the only version I've ever heard
  5:04am
fred von helsing:

Perhaps the TT2 spirits are trapped and yearn to roam the station freely. For some strange reason this suggests the possibility of an all-8-track show...
  5:04am
Matt from Springfield:

@Bas: I actually just woke up at home--but other shows here I listen to on earbuds at work, sometimes in the morning but usually 3-6.
  5:04am
Julie:

the turntable spirits keep me company here in the middle of the night...I think they come and visit Dum Dum
  5:05am
pierre:

i'm a bit frightened… O_O
  5:06am
Matt from Springfield:

@Julie: This version is certainly fitting for the show, and you can appreciate the lyrics better this way.
  5:06am
jaycjay:

Add me to the list: the only version of this I've ever heard.
  5:07am
listener mark:

Dum Dum is dum dum.
  5:07am
jaycjay:

I mean, I know it's his song, but never listened to that whole album.
  5:08am
Julie:

I think her version is creepy as hell, no idea what his is like.
  5:09am
Julie:

whoops
  5:09am
fred von helsing:

But a Dum Dum Girl is a Dum Dum Girl
  5:09am
pierre:

yeah that's it : Creepy !
(if i remember right, his version is angry as hell, but not sure…)
  5:11am
jaycjay:

@pierre, certainly what I'd expect.
  5:12am
Matt from Springfield:

The orchestrations on Tori's give it a better atmosphere--Eminem rapped it, mixed in with actual vocals from Hayley.

I just had to look up when her daughter Tosh was born--2000, less than a year before that release. Imagine Tori singing her baby to sleep with that song! ;)
  5:14am
pierre:

brrrrrr… cold feeling down my spine.
  5:15am
Matt from Springfield:

@pierre: That means the show's working! Just keep taking it for another 45 minutes, and you'll feel sufficiently dark for the week :)
  5:16am
Matt from Springfield:

Oooh, Altered Images again! Is this a personal record of yours, or is it at the station?
  5:16am
fred von helsing:

This AI singer sounds like the gal that fronted Frostiva
  5:17am
jaycjay:

Dark Week of the Soul.
  5:17am
Julie:

Mine, we don't seem to have Happy birthday here
  5:17am
Julie:

hmm frostiva..may have to look them up
  5:18am
fred von helsing:

Frostiva, it's hard to find their stuff, I can post a coupla trax
  5:19am
other david:

Excellent set, love the Altered Images track.

The music may be dark on the show, but it gives me a warm fuzzy feeling. Must see a doctor about that.
  5:20am
Julie:

You can also get that feeling by eating a box of q-tips
  5:22am
Matt from Springfield:

Normally I'm not crazy about Olivia as you are, but "Amoreuse" is a GREAT one! All the way back in '73 too! Good arrangements, chords similar to "Angie".
  5:22am
other david:

Julie, eek - know from experience? :P
  5:22am
pierre:

(don't want to bother anybody with my french, but wouldn't that be "Amoureuse" ?)

This is why i love your show Julie, i'd never find this to listen to, but i just tune in, and lot of melodies enter into my ear, some of them works on me a lot.
  5:23am
listener mark:

Julie needs a sidekick.
  5:23am
pierre:

so agreed with Matt on this ONJ track
  5:24am
Julie:

@Pierre I have a feeling it's not..I think it's that way on the record, but I don't have the package with me
  5:25am
Matt from Springfield:

@pierre: That's why I love a lot of shows here--and the commenters too--it's all part of an exchange of ideas. You don't know what will strike your fancy, but you listen to someone else's music and learn new things. You can also refer others to things you know about and learn new things from other commenters. It's a community here!

@Matt: well said :)

psmith the butler:

didn't even know Livvy had done Amoreuse, I only know the Kiki Dee and the Helen Reddy! more education...
  5:29am
listener mark:

yes
  5:30am
other david:

That was a brilliant set
  5:30am
pierre:

@ Matt : yes, i feel like its a family, glad and proud to be part of it.
  5:31am
Sam:

You can fit a lot of music in a movie like that because the penguins have very little dialogue
  5:34am
fred von helsing:

Electrelane was gonna play Hellsinki and they had to cancel. Me sad. However we do have very musical penguins here.
  5:37am
other david:

I just started listening to Electrelane a week or two before they reformed, normally it happens the other way around with me - so it was a nice surprise!

No dates in Ireland yet and can't afford to wander over to England to see them :(
  5:37am
jaycjay:

@pierre and matt, so true! I regret that for long I listened to WFMU over the airwaves. I knew the comment boards existed but never checked them out until changing my home office around and starting to rely on streaming instead of the radio... so found out what I'd been missing.
  5:37am
Julie:

@OD thank you!
  5:40am
Matt from Springfield:

So young, but so cold. That's an interesting form of electronic music--I can't really compare it to anything else.

Glad as well to have pierre, other david and jaycjay in the community!
  5:42am
Julie:

it's "coldwave"
  5:42am
Matt from Springfield:

Peter Noone doing "White Wedding"--he's got an accent for it, but this is borderline Golden Throats material!

He already kind of did that with a 1971 solo release of Bowie's "Oh! You Pretty Things"
  5:42am
listener mark:

Thank you, Julie. A great ride through the night.
  5:43am
Julie:

Thanks Mark!
  5:43am
Matt from Springfield:

Noone replaced Bowie's line "The Earth is a bitch" with "The Earth is a beast", in a performance that NME editors Roy Carr and Charles Shaar Murray called "one of rock and roll's most outstanding examples of a singer failing to achieve any degree of empathy whatsoever with the mood and content of a lyric".
  5:44am
Matt from Springfield:

@Julie: "Coldwave"--that works. I guess that was primarily a European thing?
  5:44am
Julie:

yes, and in particular French
  5:45am
pierre:

: )

the wave is Cold in here, indeed.
  5:47am
Matt from Springfield:

@pierre: Yoko says: "Don't Count The Waves" !
Check out that one, pierre. Amazing vocals and guitaring. Very noisy but it works!
  5:49am
Matt from Springfield:

Ah, Akmenu is Latvian--I was thinking Georgian, or some former Soviet republic.

You seem to be finding quite a bit of great Baltic (Lithuanian/Latvian) music for the show!
  5:50am
Julie:

I like music from countries I know nothing about :)
  5:55am
Julie:

Thank you guys sooo much for tuning in. Hope you enjoyed my little mishmash today!
  5:56am

Already looking forward to next week :)

Thanks for your hard work on the live set - it sounds great. A little too great, i can hear every little guitar mistake i played! It was a VERY hot and sweaty night though, and i dont think anyone really noticed! :D
Thanks again Julie
